You won't believe there's a CHINATOWN here too!!!

Ever since becoming a self-proclaimed Chinatown enthusiast, many people have reached out to me with different resources and information regarding Chinatowns here in California. One of the viewers told me there was an old Chinatown up in Colusa, a small city by Yuba City, so here we go.

Back in the days, Colusa flourished from its proximity to the Southern Pacific Railway, and also due to its proximity to the northern gold mines. The early Chinese folks there were hired as general laborers, and others worked in the usual Chinatown businesses such as wash houses and restaurants.

One of the most significant stories of Colusa's Chinatown was the lynching of Hong Di. Hong Di was a Chinese teenager hired as a house servant for the Billiou family, and he supposedly shot and killed his employer Julie Billiou on April 7, 1887. While we do not know the motive behind the killing, Hong Di was eventually caught and thrown in jail. A group of mobs with guns overran the jail, dragged Hong Di through the streets of Chinatown, and was hanged from the rafters of the locomotive turntable of the Colusa and Lake Railroad.

More info on the history of Colusa's Chinatown:

Smallest Church in California The Little Shrine

Traveling up CA-45 towards Colusa CA sits what people call The Little Shrine It seems that the only thing that has changed since the shrine was originally built in 1883 are the church's surroundings. The delightful shrine was designed and built by Father Michael Wallrath. The cross came first and the altar was built after Father Wallrath decided the cross needed something more to preserve its identity. The tiny little building contains only a small altar dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. Back in the day, mass was said whenever a priest was available. The congregation would sit in the open while the priest celebrated mass in the shrine. Afterwards, the congregation would enjoy a picnic together. The doors to the church remain unlocked to this day, welcoming anyone and everyone who wishes to stop by to pray or simply check out the strange Gothic structure located just 100 yards from the highway.
