Uyuni Bolivia Uncovered: What No One Tells You

In this video we arrive exhausted into the fascinating town of Uyuni in Bolivia, we did not really know what to expect but it was a really cool experience, all though no one tells you just how cold the place is and that hardly anywhere has proper heating. We spent our first day just walking through the streets and seeing such a different world to our own lives back home.

We were both feeling too un well to really speak as the bus journey from San Pedro de Atacama had filled with dust and made us pretty much lose our voices, but we only had limited time here so we wanted to take a look and show you around this awesome little town, before we head out for some adventures nearby.

Here is what to expect in Uyuni, it’s definitely a place to visit at least once in your lifetime!

Tipp: Don't book at Camel Tours. We were not satisfied with our driver Roberto, since he pushes very aggressively to keep the schedule. You'll have more then enough time at the market to buy souvenirs but will be urged to hurry up at the sights like salt flat, salt hotel or Geysirs. No sense of customer is king was visible :-(

VISITING THE BOLIVIAN SALT FLATS 2020 | UYUNI, BOLIVIA TRAVEL VLOG

We are flying from La Paz to Uyuni and visiting the Bolivian Salt Flats in Uyuni, Bolivia! The famous reflection mirror is one of Bolivia's top tourist attractions and definitely does not disappoint! We have just one full day to explore this area although there are weeks worth of activities to see.

The Uyuni Salt Flats are the largest salt flats in the words and have the greatest reserve of lithium as well. They were able to host part of the Dakar race from 2014 to 2018.

When visiting Bolivia & the Uyuni Salt Flats, most of the day tours will take you through the same route. Our first stop was at the train cemetery that is a fun place to take pictures and climb on trains from the 1900's. Our second stop is in the small village of Colchani, Bolivia's largest salt processing cooperative where we learn more about the salt process. Finally, we arrive at the salt flats in time for lunch at an old salt hotel! Our tour guides know all the information and are able to come up with all the fun ideas to create the best pictures and guide us through the poses and motion.

Salar De Uyuni Bolivia - Uyuni Salt Flats is The Biggest Mirror in the World's - Amazing Places

Salar De Uyuni Bolivia most beautiful place in the world. Uyuni Salt Flats is The Biggest Mirror in the World's. Amazing Places Uyuni Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni was formed due to transformations between several prehistoric lakes that existed around forty thousand years ago but had all evaporated over time. Sal de Uyuni Bolivia is now covered by a few meters of salt crust, which has an extraordinary flatness with average elevation variations within one meter over the entire area of the Salar. The crust serves as a source of salt and covers a pool of brine, which is exceptionally rich in lithium. Uyuni salt flats Bolivia The large area, clear skies, and exceptional surface flatness make the Salar ideal for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. Following rain, a thin layer of dead calm water transforms the flat into the world's largest mirror, 129 kilometers across. Uyuni Bolivia is part of the Altiplano of Bolivia in South America. Bolivia salt flats The Altiplano is a high plateau, which was formed during the uplift of the Andes mountains. Salt Desert Bolivia The plateau includes fresh and saltwater lakes as well as salt flats and is surrounded by mountains with no drainage outlets. Uyuni Salt Lake The geological history of the Salar is associated with a sequential transformation between several vast lakes. Bolivia Salt Lake Some 30,000 to 42,000 years ago, the area was part of a giant prehistoric lake, Lake Minchin. Biggest Mirror in the World's Salar De Uyuni Bolivia. Beautiful places Uyuni Salt Flats age was estimated by radiocarbon dating shells from outcropping sediments and carbonate reefs and varies between reported studies. largest salt flat in the world Salar De Uyuni Bolivia. Lake Minchin later transformed into Paleo Lake Tauca having a maximal depth of 140 meters, and an estimated age of 13,000 to 18,000 or 14,900 to 26,100 years, depending on the source. Salar de Uyuni is estimated to contain 10 billion tonnes of salt, of which less than 25,000 t is extracted annually. All miners working in the Salar belong to Colchani's cooperative. Because of its location, large area, and flatness, the Salar is a major car transport route across the Bolivian Altiplano, except when seasonally covered with water. Salar means salt flat in Spanish. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen; Uyuni is a surname and the name of a town that serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar. Thus Salar de Uyuni can be loosely translated as a salt flat with enclosures, the latter possibly referring to the islands of the Salar, or as salt-flat at Uyuni. Aymara legend tells that the mountains Tunupa, Kusku, and Kusina, which surround the Salar, were giant people. Tunupa married Kusku, but Kusku ran away from her with Kusina. Grieving Tunupa started to cry while breastfeeding her son. Her tears mixed with milk and formed the Salar. Many locals consider the Tunupa an important deity and say that the place should be called Salar de Tunupa rather than Salar de Uyuni. Salar de Uyuni has two distinct seasons. Uyuni salt flats tour The rainy season is when visitors come to witness the Salar’s breathtaking mirror effect. Be wary of excessive rain in December and January, as it can cause tour cancelations. During the dry season, temperatures are colder, the ground has hardened, and travelers can drive across the stark white landscape to places that aren’t accessible in the rainy season. Salar de Uyuni tour operators consider June through August their high period, and rates may rise accordingly. The Salar is virtually devoid of any wildlife or vegetation. The latter is dominated by giant cacti. They grow at a rate of about 1 cm/a to a height of about 12 meters.
