The Essential East Lothian Day Trip | Exploring Alba
Ahead of the summer holidays, and in anticipation of an influx of visitors to the region, I’ve put together a short guide to an amazing day trip around East Lothian.
In this guide I’ll share with you some of the towns, cafés, beaches, walks, and lesser known areas I’ve come to love after a couple of years exploring the area. I hope this guide will help you appreciate East Lothian in the same way as those of us lucky enough to call it home.
Those disclaimers, again. I’m not an expert and haven’t done everything. I’m not being paid or compensated in any way to say these things, all my own opinions. I’m focusing on the coast intentionally. This day trip is based entirely around public transport, primarily East Coast Bus #124.
This guide was shot on an iPhone 11. Drone footage kindly supplied by Cheyne. Special thanks to Sandra for the photo of Tyninghame and to Chris for introducing me to a couple of those gems in Dunbar. Edited in Lumafusion.

Prestonpans | Exploring Alba
Prestonpans, the wee seaside town I’ve been fortunate enough to call my home for a little over a year, has been looking particularly peachy in the recent snow - so I took a long walk to shoot this short, cinematic tour.
As it's known locally, 'the Pans' is located only a few miles east of Edinburgh but feels far removed from the city, holding on to the same small town feel it's enjoyed for centuries. Despite the size, the area is bustling with local history. Murals spread across the town tell tales of Prestonpans’ early days as a fishing village, hub for various industries, and famous battleground - these colourful depictions earned the town the distinction of ‘Scotland’s Murals and Tapestry Town’.
Now, the population sits a little over 10,000 and the area surrounding Prestonpans is growing steadily. I really enjoy living here, and I hope you’ll enjoy this scenic tour!
This short clip was filmed on an iPhone 11 with FiLMiC Pro, using a Moment Anamorphic lens and Gobe VND8-128 filter, and a few shots with a Freefly Movi Cinema Robot. Edited in Davinci Resolve 16.

Prestongrange in the coastal village of Prestonpans is a free-to-visit outdoor museum that showcases East Lothian's rich industrial heritage.
The museum aims to educate visitors about the 800-years of industrial activity that left its mark on the area, from the almost-vanished harbour to the long-abandoned colliery.

The John Muir Way Leg 8 - Edinburgh to Port Seton
Leg 8 did not kick off as we had hoped……
Packed and ready for breakfast, we approached our Guest House ‘host’ and asked where we should leave our backpacks for the transfer pick-up when we check out. His reply was not as expected…. We were not welcome to leave them, oh, and he expected us to pay the tour company’s bill for our stay!! This triggered a very stressful series of calls and emails……. After a 2 hour delay that included waiting for a taxi to transfer our bags, we got on our way. Sadly, this delay removed the opportunity to climb Arthur’s Seat.
Special Note: our tour company worked very hard to resolve this situation. The ‘host’s’ behaviour was the worst display of arrogance by a hospitality business I’ve ever witnessed as a tourist!!
Today’s walk is mostly urban and suburban walking paths as we moved back to the southern shore of the Firth of Forth….
Oh, a group Swans are a bevy, a bank or herd…… We also see a mural about John Muir that we didn’t find in any of our walking documents……. Our arrival to Port Seton at low tide was incredible!! Very cute little fishing town!!
Watch for our entire series on The John Muir Way!

Jedburgh Castle Jail and exhibition
Jedburgh Castle was fought over during the Wars of Scottish Independence, and was demolished by the Scots commanded by Sir James Douglas of Balvenie in 1409.
In 1823 a jail was built on the site to designs by Archibald Elliot. It was modified in 1847 by Thomas Brown. This closed in 1868. The building was restored to an 1820s appearance in 1968 by Aitken and Turnbull. It opened to the public as Jedburgh Castle Jail and Museum. The museum features local history displays.

Walk the John Muir Way: Dunbar to East Linton & John Muir Country Park
In this short film, we set of from Dunbar and walk a section of the John Muir Way to East Linton passing through the John Muir County Park, learning a little about who John Muir was and what the John Muir award involves.
If you are looking for a great walk for kids and a challenge for the whole family then the John Muir Way might suit. It's a 134 mile long distance walk across the heart of Scotland. It calls through plenty of interesting urban and rural locations. You can do the whole lot in a week or so, or tackle a few miles in a day. And the learning is built in; John Muir was an explorer, conservationist and pioneer and you can follow his teachings and principles as you go. We walked a section from Dunbar to North Berwick near Edinburgh.
Follow our story and learn about John Muir, the man, the Way and his award in these three videos, produced in a paid collaboration with Premier Inn to promote their hotels as a great place to stay and to start adventures like these.
