Civita di Bagnoregio Drone Tour
Enjoy a drone preview of the upcoming walking tour of Civita di Bagnoregio, the Dying City. Civita di Bagnoregio is a small hill town in Italy's Lazio region. It is nicknamed the Dying City because the town is crumbing away and falling into the ravine below. Founded by the Etruscans 2,500 years ago, this hamlet perched on a plateau of volcanic rock can only be accessed by a footbridge joining it with the modern city of Bagnoregio. The new walking tour of this charming village will be posted up on April 4th.
This walk was filmed on November 10th, 2018. The sun was low and I wasn't too happy with the results of the walk. I was planning on re-filiming this walk in April but all of Italy is currently on lockdown so I figured I'd post up this walk now while I had the chance.

Look carefully at a map of Lazio, you will find that almost at the tracing Center of the Ferrovia Roma Nord, Civita Castellana is located. With the train from Rome to reach this town, we need an hour and 34 minutes, while from Viterbo to reach Civita Castellana Roma Nord railway takes an hour and five minutes.
Although it is near Rome, which obviously attracts a large crowd of visitors, Civita Castellana deserves attention. The origin of this town is attributed to people of Greek origin who settled in the northern Lazio. Phaseolus, named their settlement in the territory is traced back to the bronze age. In addition to Civita Castellana, belong to this territory (Tower) Calcata (VT), Castel Sant'Elia (VT) (VT), Corchiano, Fabrica di Roma (VT), Faleria, Gallese (VT) (VT), Mazzano (RM), mayerthorpe, Vallerano (VT), Vignanello (VT).
Civita Castellana, called Falerii (Veteres) was the capital of this population whose origin goes back to 1206 BC; allied with the Etruscans against Rome, were defeated with the fall of Vejo. In 241 BC following the revolt against the Romans, were deported to Faleri (Novi) about 6 miles away.
This Centre, which has no natural defenses, was abandoned by its inhabitants in the 8th century ad to return to old Falerii (Veteres), modern Civita Castellana, rich in natural defenses. Town of 16,772 inhabitants, situated on a plateau at 147 m s.l.m Tuff., for its landscape characterised by the presence of the monte Soratte, inspired numerous painters, among whom stands out Corot.
Even today it is not difficult to find English painters, who engage in the countryside surrounding the town of Civita Castellana. In the old town to visit the ruins of an ancient building with furnace, called the Lo Scasato, dating from the 4th-3rd century BC, is one of the oldest centers of pottery production, still, symbol of the town's main activity.
Interesting the Vignale Hill where you can see many traces of faliscan era. The location of cells keeps the signs of a temple dedicated to Juno Cure. Mercury's Temple in the Valley of the Rio Maggiore, places Fallen Stones is another important finding from the time faliscan. On the ruins of a temple attended until the century was built a large Roman villa.
The Piagge retains some medieval tombs excavated in the Tuff faliscan, near an ancient road to the ancient town of Pizzo Iella where is still possible to see the ruins dating back to the middle ages.
There are numerous existing necropolis in Civita Castellana, near the Temple of Juno Cure (city cells), there are the remains of some graves in the locality called South Montarano.
The necropolis of cells, bolt-Cappuccini, della Penna, of Valsiarosa, of Terrano-Carr are the existing heritage on this territory. Ponte Clementino, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Oratory of Sacro Cuore di Maria, are monuments to visit.
Certainly there are churches. The oldest, the s. Maria del Carmine also known as Santa Maria dell'arco. Then, among other places of worship should be mentioned the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, the Church of San Gregorio and other religious structures, of which only traces are visible.
There is no shortage of some medieval towers, no documents speak about 1950s in early 1800, their height ranged from eight to twelve feet tall.
Still visible today the via Don Minzoni, Court Street, in via panic (three towers), via Vinciolino, via di Corte, piazza Giacomo Matteotti, via Garibaldi and via Borguccio. Many gateways to the city, among the most important: port Posterula, door, door Faliscan Lanciana.
The imposing forte Sangallo, late 15th century, which houses the Archaeological Museum of Agro Tower, palazzo Montalto, Palazzo Farag-De Rosa, the Art Museum of ceramics are of interest. Ceramics since the 10th century a. c. characterised the life of the inhabitants of this town of Lazio. Raw materials on-site, such as large masses of lime-rich clay and iron to produce excellent products at affordable prices resulting from these processes the historical identity, cultural, economic of Civita Castellana.
In the industrial district of Civita Castellana insist 43 companies producing sanitary ceramics, of which 37 are active, the turnover of Viterbo is equal to 40% of the national one. The reduction of sales gave rise to phenomena of layoffs and corporate restructuring. It's the global crisis that caused repercussions even in the field of ceramics, the industrial area of Civita Castellana is outpacing brilliantly.

Built over 2000 years ago, it is accessible via a long narrow walkway/bridge with beautiful plateaus on both sides. Walking on that bridge was an amazing feeling. it fully deserves its nickname city in the sky. Fortunately, the weather was gorgeous.
