ENSENADA, MEXICO Travel Guide ???????? The Birthplace of Fish Tacos & Margaritas!

???? WATCH NEXT: Best Birria in San Diego
???? JOIN THE COMMUNITY:
???? MERCH & GOODIES:
???? PLEASE SUBSCRIBE:

Ensenada, Mexico, one of the first settlements in the Californias (US State and Mexican States of Baja California), has since emerged as a popular cruise ship destination and jump off point to Mexico’s wine region; Valle de Guadalupe, which we will visit in the next episode.

Ensenada is a laid-back coastal city that is famous for delicious seafood. It is also home to the original fish taco, and birthplace of the Margarita; Two reasons alone to take a tour of Ensenada!

After crossing the US/Mexico border at San Ysidro in San Diego to Tijuana on our first day, and taking our Baja Road Trip south, we stopped in Rosarito for breakfast and tacos. Then, Puerto Nuevo for lobster before arriving to our Airbnb in Ensenada last night.

Today, we set out to find the best things to do in Ensenada, and as per usual, it all begins with food.

There are several taco stands that lay claim to the original Baja-style fish taco, but general consensus grants Tacos Fénix the distinct honor of being first, with the same family still serving up this street treat since it opened in 1970.

The fish tacos here are delicious, and so are the shrimp tacos. They are all battered and fried right in front of you, and then you get to pick out your own toppings.

I highly recommend stopping at Tacos Fénix on your Ensenada tour for breakfast (or lunch).

Next, we took a walking tour of Ensenada and visited a popular church and the main downtown area. One recommendation that many of you had on Instagram as the best things to do in Ensenada was to visit Mercado Negro (Black Market), which is the local fish market here.

It was small and smelled like fish (obviously), but it was cool to see where our seafood was coming from.

From Mercado Negro, we continued our food tour of Ensenada to Sabinas Restaurant. Now, this place is actually famous because of a street cart that is usually parked outside called “La Guerrerense.” A Mexican food street cart that is famous for its seafood tostadas.

These Mexican tostadas were smothered with ceviche, avocados, homemade salsas, and both raw and cooked seafood. They are full of flavor and very original. I can see why Sabina has become so famous, and La Guerrerense is a must-visit while visiting Ensenada.

In the afternoon, we set out on a mission to discover the birthplace of the Margarita. In Ensenada, there are two bars that claim to be the original Margarita.

First, Bar Andaluz, at the Riviera Cultural Center in downtown Ensenada claims that a bartender here was given the task of creating a new signature cocktail by then owner Margarita King.

Second, Cantina Hussong’s claims that a bartender was creating new Tequila cocktails when the daughter of German Ambassador (Margarita) came in and tried the cocktail. She liked it and he named it after her.

Both very good stories, both very good margaritas!

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Ensenada, I highly recommend following our tour for the day!

Next up, we head to Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s wine region, before heading back north to Tecate and Mexicali!

Stay tuned!!

Guadalajara - Mexico's BEST City?

Reuben and Rebecca travel with family to Guadalajara to try local food and drink, discover the surrounding magic towns, visit pyramids and find out if this historical city is Mexico's best. As always, we travel on a budget which means using the CBX to fly from Tijuana, finding a free walking tour and eating tacos for $1!

DON'T MISS THIS CHARMING TOWN IN THE YUCATAN! | Valladolid, Mexico

Come here before the tourist masses find out how amazing it is! lol Valladolid is definitely an underrated gem in the Yucatan peninsula and offers a variety of attractions in a much more peaceful than Cancun or Tulum. Valladolid is a small city of about 50,000 people with great local hotels, restaurants and an abundance of spectacular cenotes within biking distance. It's also a 40 minute drive from Chichen Itza so you can get a local bus or taxi to take you right when it opens before the droves of tourists from the big cities come in. I had an amazing time here and hope this video will be helpful to you if you're planning on visiting. xx

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*

Everyone knows Tijuana, Mexico for its incredible street tacos, and thanks to my last video Ultimate Tijuana Taco Tour I definitely have kept that narrative going.

However, there is so much more to Tijuana than street meat and food stalls! Tijuana is going through an amazing culinary revolution with chefs and entrepreneurs setting up their own restaurants in the city.

We start the day at an incredible little bakery called La Ventanita del Pan, where they are serving up the most delicious baked goods and sweets I have ever tasted. Marcela is taking Mexican baked goods to the next level by taking a page out of the French cookbook - butter on butter on butter.
La Ventanita del Pan is a must-visit on your list of things to do in Tijuana, Mexico.

One of the main reasons for creating this video, is to highlight the culinary revolution happening here in Tijuana.Beyond the famously delicious street tacos, there’s a new wave of Mexican chefs and entrepreneurs who are establishing high level breweries and eateries all over the city. One of those people is Chef Adria Marina, who opened the critically acclaimed Georgina’s with a fusion of flavors from all over the world.

Next, the Tortas Wash Mobile makes one tasty Carne Asada torta while you're washing your car!

And of course, a trip around Tijuana wouldn't be complete without a stop at the birthplace of the Caesar Salad; Caesar's in Hotel Caesars.

As the story goes, and this story takes a number of turns, back during the prohibition days of the 1920s, Italian-born chef Caesar Cardini moved from California to Tijuana to open a restaurant in order to avoid the alcohol bans in US establishments.

Now, who actually created the caesar salad itself is up for debate - Cardini’s daughter says it was him who created the original caesar salad, other’s say it was his brother Alex, and some believe it was actually an employee.

The host here even tells us that Wallis Simpson and Prince Edward the 8th, after visiting in 1933, took the recipe back to England and made the caesar salad famous worldwide.

Last, but certainly not least, we went to Misión 19 to try the fine dining of Tijuana. A deliciously creative play on Baja California and Mexican cuisine.

Add these places to your list of things to do in Tijuana, Mexico the next time you're traveling.

SAN MIGUEL DE ALLENDE has the vibes you're looking for

Come sink into the vibe of San Miguel de Allende. In this travel guide we breath deep, slow down, and take take in everything we can in one of Mexico's most charming hill towns.

Chapters:
00:00 Intro
01:27 Welcome to San Miguel de Allende
04:46 Food
06:56 Mercado de Artesanías & Fabrica la Aurora
09:18 Vibe
10:50 Final Thoughts

If only one word could be used to describe San Miguel de Allende, it would be vibe. This magical town in the rolling hills of Guanajuato State is a place unto itself.

San Miguel de Allende is a wanderer's paradise. Around every corner is something unique, interesting, and beautiful to discover. A great self guided walking tour is to visit a few (or many) of the historic churches. Start at the Zocolo at Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. Pick a direction and just start walking.

When it comes time to eat, San Miguel is full of excellent options. We ate at Baja Fish Taquito for some of the best fish tacos we've had. Their house made salsas really complete meal. If you're looking for something a bit more upscale we recommend La Doña de San Miguel. Grab a table on the roof top patio for some excellent views and even better food.

San Miguel is ripe with excellent shopping. Head over to the covered alleys of Mercado de Artesanías to pick up some locally made goodies at reasonable prices. Or, for something on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, visit Fabrica la Aurora, an old fabric mill reimagined into a fine art complex. Many of the pieces here fetch 5 or 6 figures. But it costs nothing to wander the galleries and appreciate the fine art.
