What To See In Naples And Sorrento | Perfect Combo of History, Culture, and Scenery | Travel Vlog
I had such a good time in Naples, Italy that I didn't want to leave. I got to extend my hotel stay and then took a friend's advice to get to the top of Montesanto. I took the funicolare because I was pressed for time but you can climb it! The views from the Castel Sant'Elmo, a medieval fortress located on the hilltop near the Certosa di San Martino, were stunning. The overlook gave me a moment to reflect about my time in the city. Then I took the local train Circumvesuviana to Sorrento towards the Amalfi Coast. The rest of that day in Sorrento was romantic and magical. I met some great people and really enjoyed the shopping. The town is very peaceful. Thanks for watching my vlog! Stay tuned for updates as my journey continues.

Picture 1: A small pool for catching rainwater in the Atrium room of a Roman home at Herculaneum.
Picture 2: A Thermopolium at Herculaneum. (Basically the ancient Roman version of a 'fast food' restaurant or a snack bar.)
Picture 3: A reconstructed roof of a Roman home at Herculaneum, attached to the end of the roof tile is a carved decorative anthemion (Palmette) piece depicting a face.
Picture 4: Three paintings, on plaster, above a household shrine in a Roman home at Herculaneum. Depicted at the center is a man sitting beside a body of water and playing with a spotted feline. Flanking him are depictions of serpent tailed men with horse legs, each hold trays as if serving someone- probably the man depicted at the center.
Picture 5: A Roman street, A window from a home is on the left; at the center are stairs which led to an apartment room above the lower homes or businesses. To the right is a doorway to the home on the bottom floor.
Picture 6: A wall at Herculaneum, which was painted with advertisements: The lower painting is most likely a political add requesting the support of a certain citizen to a specific governmental position, although it may be an event notice given by an official in an attempt to gain favor with the citizens.
The painting above, depicting jars, may be an advertisement for a business.
Picture 7: A sign indicating that the home or business behind the closed portion is off limits to visitors. A 'Do not Enter' sign.
Picture 8: A lavish Lararium: A decorated shrine or altar within a Roman home dedicated to the gods of the house -which include popular deities, protective spirits of the family and prominent ancestors.
Picture 9: A 'dressing room' or 'locker room' of a public bathhouse. Here the citizens would undress- before working out at the gymnasium (if a man) or going to the bath house rooms (man or women in their separate bath houses). Clothes would be left in the cubbies provided above the stone bench against the wall.

Santuario di Santa Maria dell'Isola di Tropea
Surrounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Santuario di Santa Maria dell’Isola is in the town of Tropea in the Province of Vibo Valentia. While its history is uncertain, the area is known to have come under the auspices of Basilian monks of the Eastern rite some time during the early Middle Ages. In the 11th century, the island’s religious reigns were passed to the Benedictines under guidance of the Normans. Tropea and the surrounding communities were gradually Latinized, and interestingly, the Abbey of Montecassino has held dominion over the island sanctuary for over 1,000 years.
Little of the original structure remains due to the devastating earthquakes of 1783 and 1905. Today, Santa Maria dell’Isola has become one of Calabria’s most internationally recognized symbols.
To visit the sanctuary from the old town, a set of steps leads down to the beach level near the Piazzetta del Canone. And then, stairs sculpted out of the rock lead up to the church with its pristine façade – almost too smooth and perfect the nearer you get, which is the end result of the previous face’s complete collapse during the seismic event of 1905.
Entrance to the church is free, but access to the rooms above and to the rest of the “island” requires a modest admission. Climbing up the irregular steps to the small museum with windows facing back onto the historic center is priceless. As are the views from the church’s terrace and gardens.
