REUNION ISLAND: Ultimate Travel Guide to VOLCANOES & BEACHES in the Indian Ocean
This is the French paradise in Africa! Far away in the Indian Ocean is an incredible nature paradise island called La Réunion. Between Mauritius and Madagascar, this island has crazy white beaches, stunning volcanic landscapes, lush waterfalls and cosy colonial towns.
During our two week family holiday full of sun, beaches, hikes and great food, I show you all the highlights of La Réunion and all the top sights. At the airport in Saint-Denis we rent a car and drive to Boucan Canot, a hotspot near the best beaches. We visit the best snorkeling spot at Plage de l'Hermitage and drive down south to Saint-Pierre. We visit the volcanos at Piton de la Fournaise and see the best jungle waterfall Cascade de Grand Galet. Of course we brought the drone for perfect 4K footage. This video is the perfect guide for a family holiday to Reunion Island!
In the previous episodes you saw how we made a road trip from Cape Town to Kruger Park in South-Africa. We drove the Cape Namibia Route along the West Coast to look for animals in the Kalahari Desert. After that we crossed the border into Namibia, where we drove straight through the world's highest sand dunes in the Sossusvlei. We saw all the sights in Namibia and wend on for a safari in Etosha National Park. Lately we visited Botswana and Zimbabwe, to cross the border again back to South Africa. After the Kruger Park, we fly out of Johannesburg to take you island hopping on Mauritius and also the French island of La Réunion.
Our journey through Africa is part of a one and a half year trip around the world. We can even continue to travel indefinitely. On New Year's Day we started in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the Canary Islands. La Réunion is already destination number 26, after Oman, Cape Verde, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Tobago, Grenada, the Bahamas, the United States, Mexico, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Qatar, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Australia, the Philippines, Zanzibar & Tanzania, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Mauritius. 1. It is very easy to get a visa for travel to the island, which means that there is little to do in preparation for this trip.
2. There are numerous direct flights available to Reunion Island, and anyone that flies from France will find themselves on a domestic flight.
3. The active basaltic volcano of Piton de la Fournaise can be found on this island and it is quite the sight to see. When it is erupting, people can see lava pouring down the sides, and when it is not, everyone can hike it to see the crater and the volcanic plains.
4. Some of the villages on the island can be found inside large craters and they are begging to be seen by visitors. People can visit any of them, but Cirque de Cilaos is a popular one. There is only one road in and out of the crater and once inside, everyone will feel the temperature drop and see lush rainforests and waterfalls instead of ragged rocks.
5. There are one thousand kilometers of hiking trails on the island and they all lead through breathtaking areas with each one being more beautiful than the last. As people are walking along these trails, they will want to keep count of how many waterfalls they pass by, as there are so many on the island.
6. Divers will want to visit Reunion Island for the clear water, five hundred different fish species, and the one hundred and fifty different species of coral. Diving is easiest on the west coast. Superb underwater lava flows can see while diving on the east coast.
7. The island produces some of the best rum in the world and there is a museum dedicated to this delicious alcohol, La Saga du Rhum, in Saint-Pierre. The rum can be drank alone or with any number of self-blending herbs and spices.
8. Everyone must eat the traditional carri while visiting the island. It is an authentic Creole dish made with meat, fish, seafood or poultry and then garlic, tomatoes, onion, turmeric, cloves, and ginger is added. Other foods that must be eat include buttery pastries, curried lentils and dragon fruit.
9. The markets are a wonderful place to learn more about the local cuisine while also picking up some souvenirs. There are numerous markets on the island we recommend the Saturday market in Saint Pierre.
10. The weather on the island is quite tropical year-round and if it does happen to rain, it will be a light shower in the afternoon for a minute or two.

Bonjour à tous ... Nouvelle journée avec un incontournable de l'île de la Réunion, que nous vous conseillons de faire absolument. De la côte il vous faudra une heure et demi pour arrivée jusqu'au Cirque de Cilaos en prenant la N5, on la surnomme aussi la route aux 400 virages. Les points de vue son superbe, prenez le temps d'admirer le paysage pendant la montée. Arrivée à Cilaos vous pouvez vous garer au parking près de l'église Notre Dame des neiges. De là vous pourrez allez en ville pour voir, La maison de la Broderie, le Tsilaosa Hôtel, La maison Soledad, passé chez Tatie Rosine, flâner dans les boutiques, aller au marché couvert et aller au Restaurant du lac pour manger de bonnes Lentilles. Après vous avez beaucoup de randonnées à faire à Cilaos, la plus connu est bien sur la montée au Piton des Neiges. Il y a les cascades, les thermes et le joli point de vue de la Roche Merveilleuse. L'idéale serait de rester plusieurs jours pour profiter au maximum de ce magnifique endroit ✈️ Nous sommes resté trois semaines à la Réunion ou nous avons parcouru plus de 2000 km. Vidéos à venir ... Bassin la roche (caché) à Cilaos
Le bassin la roche se trouve à Cilaos. Pour s'y rendre prendre le sentier menant à cascade bras rouge. Après la descente vous allez traverser la rivière pour remonter. Un petit cinq minutes après la remontée il faudra quitter le sentier principal sur votre gauche. Il y a un poteau avec un écriteau jaune qui s'y trouve maintenant. Aventurez vous dans le sentier et prenez toujours à droite. Cela monte sévère puis descend de même. Très déconseillé aux personnes qui ont peur du vide et qui n'ont pas l'habitude des sentiers abruptes. Un bain très mérité vous attend au bout.
I proved the guidebook wrong - Exploring Cilaos
I wanted to try if it is possible to start hiking at 10am. I choose to go to Cilaos one of the three calderas on the island. Unlike Mafate you can go here with the car. The road from St. Louis is 38km long and the most beautiful I drove so far. It was also the most challenging one because it has 420 narrow curves. It is difficult to focus on the road when the landscape surrounding you is so incredibly beautiful but it is necessary because you have slow Mountainbikers on the right overtaking motorcycles to your right and often just one lane where it is often impossible to see if oncoming traffic is coming your way.
So I was quite happy to be fully awake. There are many hikes in Cilaos and I choose the one leading to la chapelle. The hike took 5-6 hours for 9,5 km and 800-1000m difference in altitude. I parked close to the tourist information which added another 100-200m to the altitude difference. But there I saw the beautiful streetart from the thumbnail pic.
I walked at the beginning of rain season in November so the waterfall and the following creek where too dried out for a swim. I liked the hike however the tough part is the end because you go down most of the time until you reach la Chapelle. I prefer hikes where you have the summit in the middle and I also prefer roundway instead of taking the same way back.
Bring shoes where you can walk through water. Most of the creeks where maximum knee deep. If you have a good balance you can also cross the creeks on some rocks in the creek.

La route de Cilaos
La route nationale 5 longue de 35km relie Saint-Louis au cirque de Cilaos est surnommée la route au 400 virages. Il faut être à l'aise en montagne pour s'y rendre à de nombreux endroits deux voitures ne peuvent se croiser et le klaxon est de rigueur.
