The Cape Verde Islands are set within the Atlantic Ocean with an impressive landscape and diverse culture. It was not until 1445 that the fifteen islands of the region were discovered and subsequently became a Portuguese colony. Only nine of the Cabo Verde islands are inhabited and Cidade Velha is where Cabo Verde’s history began. The Nossa Senhora Do Rosario Church is more than five hundred years old and its tiny cemetery provides shelter for the graves of the first Portuguese who landed in the region. Its church bell and richly decorated altar were pillaged by Sir Francis Drake and shipped to England. The tiny buildings of Rua De Banana were reconstructed true to the original, with the help of UNESCO. Low, elongated stone houses covered with straw, line the narrow road that leads up the valley, upstream from the sea. In 1585 the royal pirate attacked with twenty five ships and more than a thousand men. Thus, major defences were subsequently built and from that time, Cidade Velha prepared for any possible future hostilities, a fact of which pirates soon became well aware and thus avoided the island. However, when the slave trade was made illegal and a severe drought hit the region, the heyday of the first capital of Cabo Verde came to a close.

Cape Verde’s climate is tropical, with a warm, dry summer. As a part of the greater Sahel region of Africa precipitation is meager and falls between the months of June to February, peaking in September.

Some islands see almost no rain, these are Sal, Boa Vista and Maio; these are arid. The islands with the most rain fall are Santiago, Fogo and Santo Antao, but are nonetheless semi-arid.

Cape Verde is formed by 10 main islands and about 8 islets. The main islands are (clockwise from northwest):
Santo Antão - Great hiking.
São Vicente - With the cultural capital of Mindelo.
Santa Luzia - Santa Luzia is uninhabited but can be visited as a day trip from São Vicente.
São Nicolau - Rural mountainous island based on agriculture. A quiet and relaxed get away.
Sal - Has great beaches, water sports and resorts aplenty.
Boa Vista - Even nicer beaches. Great scuba diving
Maio - Even more nice beaches.
Santiago Island - The first island settled in Cape Verde. It holds the current capital Praia, the original capital Cidade Velha, and the bulk of the nation's population.
Fogo - A spectacular volcano island which erupted as recently as November 2014.
Brava - A small island only accessible by boat and is a great place to get away from it all.

There are 24 cities in Cape Verde.
Praia – the capital, on Santiago Island
Mindelo – port city on São Vicente, probably the country's liveliest
Cidade Velha (Ribeira Grande) – A historic town on Santiago
Espargos is the capital of Sal where the airport is and Santa Maria is the main tourist area at the south of the island
Assomada is the seat of municipality of Santa Catarina on Santiago
Santa Maria - former administrative capital and the most populous city on Sal
Sao Filipe - historic town on Fogo

Brava, the smallest island, is a botanist's paradise, home to many unique flora that live in its misty forests
Pico de Fogo - an active volcano on Fogo that has created a unique landscape best explored on foot or horseback

The official language is Portuguese, used in all official publications and announcements as well as in business, media and schools, but the local language is Cape Verdean Creole (Kriolu kabuverdianu), a Portuguese-based creole language with 95% of the words from Portuguese and the rest mainly from West African languages. It is divided into 9 dialects spoken on various parts of the country. Even though Kriolu is comprehensible to a skilled Portuguese-speaker, almost all people can also speak Portuguese as a second language. French is also known by many, and some people also speak English.

It is a good idea to know some Kriolu or at least Portuguese, since even though young urban people are often quite proficient in English, this does not apply to old and rural people, and even those who can speak English will highly appreciate any attempt you do to speak Kriolu or Portuguese.

Santiago gilt als die afrikanischte aller Kapverdeninseln. Nach der Entdeckung der Kapverden Anno 1460 durch die Portugiesen war Cidade Velha deren erste Siedlung auf Santiago. Der Ort wurde ein Zentrum des Sklaven- und Salbenhandels. Der Pranger Pelourinho und die restaurierte Strasse Rua Banana erinnern an diese Zeit. Anno 1590 wurde dort eine Festung errichtet. Sie wurde weitgehend restauriert und kann besichtigt werden. Es gibt in Cidade Velha zudem einige Ruinen von historischen Gebäuden wie Kathedralen und Klöstern. Die Hauptstadt Praia ist der Regierungssitz und ebenfalls recht sehenswert. Das älteste Gebäude dort ist allerdings noch nicht so alt: die Kaserne Quartel Jaime Mota stammt aus dem Jahr 1826.

One of the most beautiful places in the world to visit. This is a Cinematic travel 4k drone video of the places I visited in Cape Verde. Cape Verde is Located off the western coast of Africa, in the central Atlantic Ocean and it’s made up of 10 Islands. All the Islands are beautiful and diverse in their own way.

This visit took us to Cidade Velha – The Old city - Ribeira Grande - Santiago, Cape Verde. This was a special visit and it meant a lot.

To the musical backdrop of an exhilarating Creole tune we dive into the Sucupira of Praia. Quite in the line with the motto: The sun is for everyone, the beach is for those who deserve it let's head north where Tarrafal's best ball artists let us enjoy some mesmerizing joga bonito. Fascinated by the hustle and bustle of Somada's colourful, vivid and traditional market - as African as Cape Verdeans can be - our journey leads us into the archipelago's oldest settlement to soak up the history and atmosphere of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cidade Velha. Afterwards, the self-contained Rabelados provide an insight of their own interesting everyday life. In São Jorge dos Órgãos, smack bang in the middle of as ilhas we were invited by a proper gentleman to learn something about endemic plants. Um grogue, um quente. Morabeza at its best! To put it in a nutshell: may god always keep you lovely people this way. In peace, love and affection.

A Rua de Banana na Cidade Velha ( Ribeira Grande) Cabo Verde, é Património Mundial da Humanidade pela Unesco, desde 26 de junho de 2009.
É a rua mais antiga construída pelos Portugueses, na África Subsariana, sendo o caminho para o Convento/Igreja de São Francisco.
