Just a quick little day trip to Childersburg, AL to visit the DeSoto Caverns family park.
Exploring DeSoto Caverns ⛰️🦇🦈
We enjoyed taking a guided tour inside of Desoto Caverns near historic Childersburg Alabama. Hernando Desoto in is quest for gold explored this area of Alabama but what he found instead was more valuable in terms of natural beauty.
The main room of the cave is just over ten stories high and larger than a football field.
The caverns are noted for one of the largest continuing accumulations of onyx-marble stalagmites and stalactites in the world. DeSoto Caverns has actively growing rock formations (speleothems). For this reason, guests are not permitted to touch most of the rock formations. A burial site of the early Native American Copena culture can be seen in DeSoto Caverns. The term 'Copena' comes from the first three letters of copper and the last three letters of Galena, two materials commonly found in these burials. Caves were considered good burial spots by the Copena culture because they offered a peaceful and protective environment for the spirits of the dead. #desotocaverns #caves

Alabama is the thirtieth-largest state in the United States with 52,419 square miles of total area: 3.2% of the area is water, making Alabama 23rd in the amount of surface water, also giving it the second-largest inland waterway system in the United States. About three-fifths of the land area is part of the Gulf Coastal Plain, a gentle plain with a general descent towards the Mississippi River and the Gulf of Mexico. The North Alabama region is mostly mountainous, with the Tennessee River cutting a large valley and creating numerous creeks, streams, rivers, mountains, and lakes.
Alabama is bordered by the states of Tennessee to the north, Georgia to the east, Florida to the south, and Mississippi to the west. Alabama has coastline at the Gulf of Mexico, in the extreme southern edge of the state. Alabama's land consists of 22 million acres of forest or 67% of the state's total land area. Suburban Baldwin County, along the Gulf Coast, is the largest county in the state in both land area and water area.
The Natural Bridge Rock in Winston County is the longest natural bridge east of the Rockies.
Areas in Alabama administered by the National Park Service include Horseshoe Bend National Military Park near Alexander City; Little River Canyon National Preserve near Fort Payne; Russell Cave National Monument in Bridgeport; Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site in Tuskegee; and Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site near Tuskegee. Additionally, Alabama has four National Forests: Conecuh, Talladega, Tuskegee, and William B. Bankhead. Alabama also contains the Natchez Trace Parkway, the Selma To Montgomery National Historic Trail, and the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail.
Notable natural wonders include: the Natural Bridge rock, the longest natural bridge east of the Rockies, located just south of Haleyville; Cathedral Caverns in Marshall County, named for its cathedral-like appearance, features one of the largest cave entrances and stalagmites in the world; Ecor Rouge in Fairhope, the highest coastline point between Maine and Mexico; DeSoto Caverns in Childersburg, the first officially recorded cave in the United States; Noccalula Falls in Gadsden features a 90-foot waterfall; Dismals Canyon near Phil Campbell, home to two waterfalls, six natural bridges and allegedly served as a hideout for legendary outlaw Jesse James; Stephens Gap Cave in Jackson County boasts a 143-foot pit, two waterfalls and is one of the most photographed wild cave scenes in America; Little River Canyon near Fort Payne, one of the nation's longest mountaintop rivers; Rickwood Caverns near Warrior features an underground pool, blind cave fish and limestone formations; and the Walls of Jericho canyon on the Alabama-Tennessee state line.

A 5-mile -wide meteorite impact crater is located in Elmore County, just north of Montgomery. This is the Wetumpka crater, the site of Alabama's greatest natural disaster. A 1,000-foot - wide meteorite hit the area. The hills just east of downtown Wetumpka showcase the eroded remains of the impact crater that was blasted into the bedrock, with the area labeled the Wetumpka crater or astrobleme (star-wound) because of the concentric rings of fractures and zones of shattered rock that can be found beneath the surface. WELCOME TO DESOTO CAVERNS PARK!
Resting at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, DeSoto Caverns Park offers a unique destination for those seeking a fun and educational experience.
At our park, we offer guided tours of Alabama's big cave. It's main room is twelve stories high and larger than a football field. The caverns is decorated with thousands of formations making it one of the most concentrated collections in America.
Surrounding the caverns are over twenty exciting attractions, where guests can enjoy activities like panning for gemstones or navigating the giant Lost Trail Maze. Located only 36 miles from Birmingham, DeSoto Caverns Park is a natural wonder and a perfect setting for family fun.
Sylacauga, Alabama
Sylacauga is a city in Talladega County, Alabama. At the 2020 census, the population was 12,578.
Sylacauga is known for its fine white marble bedrock. This was discovered shortly after settlers moved into the area and has been quarried ever since. The marble industry was the first recorded industry in the Sylacauga area.
Sylacauga is the site of the first documented case of an object from outer space hitting a person. On November 30, 1954, a 4 kg (9 lb) piece of what became known as the Hodges Fragment from the Sylacauga Meteorite crashed through the roof of an Oak Grove house, bounced off a radio, and badly bruised Ann Hodges, who was taking an afternoon nap.
Sylacauga is on the 2010 list of 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance.
The city is located in southern Talladega County. Major highways that run through the city include US Routes 280 and 231, as well as Alabama State Route 21. US 280 runs northwest to southeast through the city, leading northwest (with US 231) 10 mi (16 km) to Childersburg and 47 mi (76 km) to Birmingham. US 280 runs southeast 26 mi (42 km) to Alexander City and US 231 runs south 21 mi (34 km) to Rockford. Alabama 21 runs northeast 21 mi (34 km) to the city of Talladega.
Devil's Den Falls - Chinnabee Silent Trail - Talladega National Forest - Clay County, Alabama
We went on a relatively short hike to Devil's Den Falls in Talladega National Forest. The western trailhead is the parking lot at Lake Chinnabee, which is down a couple of narrow roads about a 15 minute drive from Cheaha State Park, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. The falls are a great area for swimming. However, we just waded, because we had already been swimming that day, and we had to head back home. The trail itself had a little bit of up and down, but a 4 year-old and 9 year-old handled it with no problem, so we're sure you can, too. If you're already at Cheaha and you like hiking, you should make the extra little trip down here. The parking lot had a $3 honor box, by the way.
The entrance of Cheaha State Park is located at 19644 Hwy. 281, Delta, AL 36258. From there, drive south on Hwy 281 for 1.5 miles. Upon reaching the County Rd. 42 intersection, turn right and drive 3 miles to Forest Service Rd. 646. Turn left and drive 2 miles to the Lake Chinnabee Recreation Area. From the picnic area, head upstream on the Chinnabee Silent Trail for around 800 meters and you’ll then arrive to the waterfall.
