Chiang Mai is also a gateway to the natural wonders of northern Thailand. Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand's highest peak, is a popular day trip destination. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird watching, and exploring the park’s stunning waterfalls and pagodas. For a more adventurous itinerary, jungle trekking and ziplining are thrilling activities that allow you to experience the lush landscapes surrounding Chiang Mai.

The city is renowned for its culinary offerings, with numerous cooking schools providing classes where you can learn to make traditional Thai dishes like Khao Soi, a northern Thai curry noodle soup. These classes often include visits to local markets to select fresh ingredients, making it a fun and educational experience.

10 Must See Temples in Chiang Mai

10 Must See Temples in Chiang Mai

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Forever holding onto the crown of the most-visited, most famous, and most highly revered temple in Chiang Mai is the magnificent Wat Phra That Doi Suthep (for short, you can just call it Wat Doi Suthep). The journey up the winding mountain road is an experience in itself, whether you’re doing it on a rented scooter (250 baht for the day), as part of a private excursion (600 baht there and back) or sitting in a packed-out songthaew with the locals (80 baht for one way).

Wat Chedi Luang
If you’re short on time or have already done Doi Suthep and need more temple action, one of the best is located right in the middle of the Old City, walking distance from many of most popular hotels and markets.

Wat Phra Singh
Thanks to a huge renovation in the 19th century, plus numerous licks of paint ever since, Wat Phra Singh stands as one of the most visually impressive temples in Chiang Mai. The main temple building is the star of the show, featuring those iconic slanted Lanna-style roofs and an intricately decorated façade that shines brightly in the sunlight.

Wat Suan Dok
Characterised by its shining array of brilliant-white chedis surrounding a glowing golden stupa, Wat Suan Dok is one of the less-visited temples in Chiang Mai but still definitely still worth a look. It’s located just outside the city walls on the road towards the University and Niman area, so it’s not exactly hard to find.

Wat Umong
Still standing after 700 years, Wat Umong certainly shows its age, despite numerous touch-ups over the years. The crumbling, weather-worn central stupa towers into the sky, set around a well-maintained tropical garden and smart-looking green lawns.

Wat Phra That Doi Kham
Famous (mostly among locals) for its huge seated Buddha, Wat Phra That Doi Kham is one of the lesser-known temples in Chiang Mai thanks to its slightly out-of-the-way location, but nonetheless just as spectacular as many of the more popular temples in Chiang Mai. The Giant Buddha structure towers nearly 20 metres into the air, painted in bright white and gold colours.

Wat Sri Suphan
This central Chiang Mai temple really stands out from the rest with its shiny coat of silver paint that glistens brightly in the sunlight. The tips of the stupas are solid silver and at night they have a neon light display which turns the temple into multiple colours – a stunning sight indeed. The temple complex actually dates back to the 16th century, although the main silver building is much newer, with additional halls and monks' buildings nearby.

Wat Chiang Man
Wat Chiang Man temple once served as the residence of the city’s founder, King Mengrai, shortly after its construction in the 13th century (which makes it one of the very oldest in the region). The temple itself is a glorious sight from every angle, with the old crumbling pagoda offering an insight into the rich history of Wat Chiang Man, while the newer temple hall presents a fine example of traditional Lanna architecture that has been well maintained over the years.

Wat Lok Molee
Another visually striking temple in Chiang Mai is Wat Lok Moli, well-known for its three-tiered wooden roof and prime location very close to Chang Puak Gate on the north edge of the Old City. The main temple hall has been well-restored, although the weathered chedi at the back shows the temple's true age, dating back to around the 14th century.

Wat Phan Tao
Next door to Wat Chedi Luang – the most famous temple in Chiang Mai’s Old City – you’ll find this rather more modest building. Despite its size, it’s still well worth a look for its ornate decorations and detailed statues dotted around the garden.

10 Best Attractions in Chiang Mai Old City

10 Best Attractions in Chiang Mai Old City

Chiang Mai National Museum
Located near the historic Wat Jet Yod, this is the main museum of northern Thailand and is under the patronage of Their Royal Majesties, the King and Queen. It was renovated in 1996 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the founding of Chiang Mai and now features a larger and better organized exhibition.

Wat Chedi Luang

Built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty, Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) is a distinctive feature of the Chiang Mai skyline. At its peak, the chedi measured 60 metres across at the square base and 80 metres tall and was once the home of the Emerald Buddha, Thailand's most sacred religious relic.

Wat Bupparam
Founded by King Muang Kaew in 1497,the Viharn is a traditional Lanna Style temple and was previously known as the Royal Hall of Chao Kawilorot. The second floor is heavily adorned and features two large seated Buddha images.

Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Centre
The centre is a modern multi-media museum and cultural education centre, featuring a range of media, from video, scale models, enlarged photos, wall murals and text in Thai and English. Built in 1924, the building was the former Provincial Hall of Chiang Mai and is considered to be a stunning example of post-colonial Thai architecture.

Wat Phan Tao
Wat Phan Tao is directly adjacent to Wat Chedi Luang. Although there is a wall between the two, you can walk through one to get to the other. The name of this temple means Monastery of a Thousand Kilns, in reference to the numerous Buddha images within the magnificent Wat Chedi Luang. The temple has a viharn, which is one of the few remaining all-wood structures in Chaing Mai, this was originally the ho kham which literally translates as ‘guilded hall’ and was the palace of Chiang Mai's king, Chao Mahawong, who ruled from 1846 to 1854.

Wat Phra Sing
This venerable temple, located at the end of Ratchadamnoen Road, is perhaps the most venerated in Chiang Mai, behind Doi Suthep. While the dusty parking lot and hordes of taxi drivers may be discouraging at first, this temple is certainly worth a look.

Lanna Folklife Museum
Opened alongside the Chiang Mai Historical Centre, this museum has a beautiful location, inside the old courthouse, which was renovated with the project in mind. It’s close to the three kings monument in the centre of Chiang Mai Old City. The exhibition is all about the people who live and have lived in the region, setting the scene for many daily activities through wax works and relics.

Chiang Mai Historical Centre
Opened in 2013, this new museum follows the history of the Lanna (the last 700 years), as well as touching on the period before this. This museum has a much more modern feel when compared to the Chiang Mai National Museum, and it presents information in bite-size pieces, great for children.

Suan Buak Hat Park
Although Chiang Mai Old City is a quiet place, there’s not as much green space as you might expect. Suan Buak Hat Park is the best place to go if you are looking for a chilled out afternoon. You can rent a mat if you are looking to laze under the trees or take part in some of the activities that always seem to be happening there, including aerobics, badminton, yoga and tai chi.

Wat Chiang Man
This is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, built in 1296 at the time of the city's founding. The temple served as the residence of Chiang Mai's founder, King Mengrai, for a time. The buildings are finely decorated in red lacquer, gold leaf and mosaics of tinted mirror, wonderful examples of Lanna style architecture. Wat Chiang Man is located on Ratchaphakhinai Road, near the Chang Puak gate in the northern part of the old city.

Tour Of Wat Doi Kham Chiang Mai Thailand #thailand

A short tour of Wat Phra That Doi Kham Thailand. One of the best temples in Northern Thailand. The name literally means Temple of the Golden Mountain, this temple is perched on Doi Kham hill, surrounded by beautiful mountainous landscapes. This ancient temple has more than 1,300 years of history, believed to be built in circa 687. Many locals come here to make a wish. If their wish comes true, they need to 'repay' the Buddha.
