Historic Bryson City & Cherokee | 4th of July Fest, Cherokee Nation | Gateway to the Smoky Mountains
Located in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Bryson City and Cherokee offer a look into the history and culture of western North Carolina.
Join us as we kick off our adventure in North Carolina in Bryson City at their famous Freedom Fest Fourth of July Celebration. As Fodor noted, it's one of the best small town Fourth of July celebrations in the United States and we have to agree. The town comes alive and the historic downtown streets are full of vendors, food, activities, and music.
Bryson City has so much to offer beyond their annual Fourth of July party. In fact, its home to the iconic Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. The train leaves from the historic depot in the heart of downtown Bryson City and offers numerous excursions exploring the mountains and rivers that make western North Carolina special. In addition to the train, make sure you check out the visitor center, which is home to the Swain Country Heritage Museum. It perfectly encapsulates life in the region dating back decades and includes a log cabin and one room schoolhouse.
Nearby Cherokee is a must stop for anyone visiting the region. Cherokee is home to the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation and there is so much history to see and explore. During the summer, tribes members hold a Summer Bonfire for visitors looking to learn more about the Cherokee people and their history. Located along the Oconaluftee River, the bonfire is the perfect introduction to the Cherokee people, their history, and their community. If you have more time in Cherokee, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian is another great way to dive into the history of the tribe.
Cherokee is an amazing place to visit because the Cherokee people have worked hard to preserve their land and their heritage. Near the center of town, right near the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, is a sculpture of Sequoyah. Sequoyah was the creator of the Cherokee syllabary or written language. The syllabary has 85 characters that correspond to various syllables. Created in the early 1800s, the syllabary is still used and taught today throughout western North Carolina.
