STEAMS FAREWELL SONG IN CHINA PART THREE, RESHUI
Although china rail by the start of 2003 had almost relegated the iron horse to the history books, there still remained many industrial operations that used steam locomotives, from the height of steam action in the late 1980's, when China rail boosted over 8,000 steam locomotives on its books, the decline of steam has been relentless.
As we started the new millennium, official figures quoted 1,014 steam locomotives still active on China rail. Most of the fleet of QJ 2-10-2's are only 20-30 years old and still in very good working order, however due to the electrification and upgrading of many China rail lines many old diesels have been released, and shortly after this film was taken in February and March 2004, in late March diesel trials were carried out over the Jingpeng pass, reports in winter 2004-2005 suggest only 30% of trains were steam hauled, with at least one diesel piloting the steam locomotives, and many in pairs, and 10 more were expected in February 2005.
Shortly after this diesel power took over on the Jingpeng pass.
This programme includes levels 1,2 and 3 above Reshui.

Yongchuan Coal Railway: Mine to Washery
This 762mm electric line is west of Chongqing. It operates in two sections with different wagons, cabooses and couplings. The first section is from the mine to the washery at Honglu. The railway had a set of 5 identical locos until one was replaced after a level crossing collision by a new loco of more modern design. Of all the Chinese narrow gauge lines I am aware of, this is the closest to a China Rail operation in miniature.
China Steam 2012 - Part 4 of 4 - Beitai iron mongery
Steam locomotives in Beitai steel factory (North-Eastern China). The high furnaces depicted in this video were closed in December 2012 and steam locomotives are no longer present on the site.
LCGB China Nancha Part 1
In steam days, Nancha was a famous destination for Nancha Bank on the branch line north towards the Russian border. The locos were QJ and often double headed and banked trains. One of the challenges with video is when trains slow to a crawl so much of my filming was done while the trains were still travelling at speed. A bit of hard editing has been necessary with some of the slow stuff. This was filmed on video 8 and the image quality and the drop outs are part of the footage. Despite that, I hope you will find this enjoyable.
The Dongchang - Beichang shuttle... (HD)
The crew of SY 1340 didn't succeed in getting the Dongchang - Beichang coal shuttle (This train runs about every hour from the mine at Dongchang to the washery at Beichang...) up the grade, and they stalled on the level crossing... (They didn't make good speed at the beginning of the climb, and wheelslip quickly brought the speed down to zero...) They decided to let the train roll back to Dongchang and then went for a second - and finally more powerful - attempt, which was more succesful! (Bt the way, look at the little blue bus taking a dangerous risk! The same morning, a taxi was caught by a steam locomotive near here... Some people never learn...) China - Steam to the Gobi Desert - English • Great Railways
This classic documentary by Nick Lera takes us on a 1991 journey on China’s railways, the world's last great bastion of steam operation. Starting in the last standard gauge steam locomotive factory at Tangshan, where we join coal miners in their steam-hauled shuttle to the pithead, we travel from Beijing past the Great Wall of China and on through the wilds of inner Mongolia to Zhongwei on the edge of the Gobi desert. En route we enjoy a good lunch in our dining car express, and take a dramatic cab ride aboard our steam locomotive, one of China’s famous QJ class 2-10-2 locomotives. Other classic steam types featured are YJ 2-6-2 at Baotou steel works, plus JF 2-8-2 and SY 2-8-2 on branch line and mine service. A rare archive clip shows an ex-Soviet Railways FD class 2-10-2 filmed inside the great Yangtze bridge.
We conclude with double-headed heavy freights in stunning mountain scenery on the horseshoe curves beyond Zhongwei en route to China’s Far West. In all, a fascinating portrait of a now vanished era.

Steam in China 2000 – Chengde Steelworks Branch
Revised and extended upload. Chengde, in Hebei Provence, 250km NE of Beijing is known to tourists for its many Buddhist Temples. Until the end of steam operation, it was best known to steam enthusiasts for the Chengde Steelworks branch railway. The line served a steelworks just beyond the summit tunnel at the top of a moderately steep incline. Mineral trains and some ordinary freight were propelled up the branch by the unusual combination of a single train engine and a pair of banking locomotives at the rear. JS and SY class 2-8-2 locomotives were used in various combinations for this task. The constant stream of trains made this a steam enthusiasts paradise. Steam operation ceased within a couple of years of my visit.
Beijing Railway Museum
If you like old steam locomotives then Beijing Railway museum is certainly the place to visit. As the Beijing National Film Museum is located near by, it is worthwhile visiting both museums in one day.

Chinese train transporting coal
Coal is the main energy used in China.
Coal is used in power plants to produce electricity. It is used by most street restaurants to cook food.
Coal is carried by train all over China. Mostly it comes from north China.

A tender first Brit | 47614 & 70014 'Iron Duke' head home to Crewe | 27/10/19
A rather unusual sight at Long Buckby last night as 70000 'Britannia' made her way back north to Crewe after her foray south during October, including the Bluebell Railways 'Giants of Steam Gala' and her trip at the head of 'The Golden Arrow' masquerading as last southern class mate 70014 'Iron Duke'.
With LSL 47614 at the head of the ECS move back from Carnforth, 70000 was, much to our surprise, facing tender first in the formation as the train sped through the station en-route for Crewe.
My second video from the days outtings will follow during the course of the week. Hope you enjoy!

The Yongchuan Coal Railway
The narrow gauge Yongchuan Coal Railway, in the Chongqing Region of China, runs for about 20kms and is worked as two sections. The largest mine and washery is about half way along the line at Hongluchang. From there empties head to two other mines to bring unwashed coal back whilst, in the other direction, washed coal is forwarded to the China Rail interchange.
I first visited the railway in November 2012 spending two days exploring the area around Hongluchang:
the washery at Hongluchang (0:00)
street running through Old Honglu (5:20)
Liujing mine near Hongluchang (7:45)
Sixteen months later I returned for another two days and this time covered most of the line:
in the rain near Old Honglu (12:10)
Old Honglu street running (14:25)
the washery at Hongluchang (17:04)
comings and goings at the far end of the line (19:14)
back to Luijing Mine (26:10)
linesiding from China Rail to Old Honglu (27:00)
