Coleford is a small market town in the west of the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, two miles east of the Welsh border and close to the Wye Valley. It is the administrative centre of the Forest of Dean district.
Coleford was originally a tithing in the north-east corner of Newland parish. The settlement grew up (as its name suggests) at a ford through which charcoal and iron ore were probably carried. By the mid 14th century hamlets called Coleford and Whitecliff had grown up along the road in the valley of Thurstan's brook. Coleford had eight or more houses in 1349 and was described as a street in 1364. It had a chapel by 1489. In 1642 the commander of a parliamentary garrison in Coleford started a market in the town because the nearest chartered market, in Monmouth, was under royalist control.
Coleford saw some action during the English Civil War. On 20 February 1643, Lord Herbert, the Earl of Worcester's eldest son, and the King's Lieutenant-General of South Wales, marched through Coleford heading for Gloucester, at the head of an army of 500 horse and 1500 foot. At Coleford their progress was impeded by a troop of Parliamentarians under Colonel Berrowe, aided by a disorderly group of country people. A skirmish ensued, during which the market-house was burnt, and Major-General Lawday, who commanded the foot, with two other officers, were shot dead from a window.
A tramroad opened in 1812 to link mines in the Forest with the River Wye at Redbrook and Monmouth and ran through Coleford. The Monmouth tramroad continued in use until its track east of Coleford was lifted in the late 1870s. The first railway to reach Coleford, a branch line from Parkend opened by the Severn and Wye Railway Company in 1875, ran through Milkwall to a station on the south-east side of the town. A second railway from Monmouth, the Coleford Railway, using parts of the old tramroad route, was completed in 1883. It included a short tunnel at Whitecliff and it crossed the Newland road to run to a station next to that of the Severn & Wye Co
Coleford was more able to adapt to the mine closures of the 1950s than its neighbour Cinderford. Today, due to its prime location in the heart of the Forest, it is popular with walkers and cyclists, and the local council has been striving to encourage further tourist interest. There is a large factory here, originally called Carters, then Beechams, then GlaxoSmithKline, and it is now owned by the Japanese firm Suntory. It is the sole production facility for Ribena and Lucozade. One old building that has survived is the former goods shed for the defunct railway line to Monmouth; it is now the Coleford GWR Museum.

Great Malvern is an area of the spa town of Malvern, Worcestershire, England. It lies at the foot of the Malvern Hills, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, on the eastern flanks of the Worcestershire Beacon and North Hill, and is the historic centre of Malvern and includes its town centre.
It is a designated conservation area in recognition of the special architectural and historic interest of the area. The growth of Great Malvern began with the founding of an 11th-century priory. During the 19th century, it became a popular centre for hydrotherapy and swelled to include the bordering settlements of Barnards Green, Malvern Link with Link Top, Malvern Wells (South Malvern), North Malvern, and West Malvern. This urban area, along with the hills they surround and several villages, are collectively referred to as The Malverns.

Today we are exploring the Malvern hills and the town of Great Malvern. I think that the Malvern hills are overlooked sometimes as they are one of the smallest Areas of Natural Beauty in England, at only 41 square miles, but they are very central in England, located mainly in Worcestershire.
In this video we walk all over the hills, we walk to the highest point of the Malvern Hills which is the Worcestershire Beacon and visit the largest and most popular town in Malvern, Great Malvern. These are 3 things that I would recommend to you for an epic UK based day out in summer 2021!

Tenbury Wells is a market town and civil parish in the north-western extremity of the Malvern Hills District of Worcestershire, England, which at the 2011 census had a population of 3,777. Tenbury Wells lies on the south bank of the River Teme, which forms the border between Shropshire and Worcestershire. It is in the north-west of the Malvern Hills District. The settlement of Burford in Shropshire lies on the north bank of the river.
From 1894 to 1974, it was a rural district, comprising itself and villages such as Stoke Bliss, Eastham and Rochford. From 1974 Tenbury was in the District of Leominster until it became part Malvern Hills District when Leominster District Council was taken over by Herefordshire Council in April 1998. The history of Tenbury Wells extends as far back as the Iron Age. The town is often thought of as the home to the Castle Tump, but this is now in Burford, Shropshire due to boundary changes. Though the Tump, possibly the remains of an early Norman motte and bailey castle, can be seen from the main road (A456) there are no visible remains of the castle that was constructed to defend and control the original River Teme crossing. It has also been described as ... the remains of an 11th century Norman Castle.
Tenbury was in the upper division of Doddingtree Hundred. Originally named Temettebury, the town was granted a Royal Charter to hold a market in 1249. Over time, the name changed to Tenbury, and then added the Wells following the discovery of mineral springs and wells in the town in the 1840s. The name of the railway station, which was on the now-defunct Tenbury & Bewdley Railway, was changed in 1912, in an attempt to publicise the mineral water being produced from the wells around the town.
One notable architectural feature in the town is the unique (often described as Chinese-Gothic) Pump Rooms, designed by James Cranston in the 1860s, to house baths where the mineral water was available. Other notable structures in Tenbury include the parish church of St Mary with a Norman tower, and a number of monuments. The church was essential rebuilt by Henry Woodyer between 1864 and 1865. The part-medieval bridge over the River Teme, linking Tenbury to Burford, Shropshire was rebuilt by Thomas Telford following flood damage in 1795. The Grade II-listed Eastham bridge dramatically collapsed into the River Teme on 24 May 2016. There were no reports of any casualties.
The Victorian Workhouse, designed by George Wilkinson, was used as the local Council Buildings from 1937 to the early 21st century and is currently being converted into residential housing. The Victorian infirmary behind the workhouse was demolished to create car parking for a new large Tesco Superstore, which opened on 27 April 2017. Tenbury was also known as the town in the orchard due to the large numbers of fruit orchards of apple trees and also pears, quince and plum trees, in the immediate vicinity of the town. This heritage is revisited every October during the Tenbury Applefest.

Tewkesbury is a town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. Tewkesbury stands at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, and also minor tributaries the Swilgate and Carrant Brook. Tewkesbury gives its name to the Borough of Tewkesbury, of which the town is the second largest settlement. Tewkesbury lies in the far north of the county, forming part of the border with Worcestershire.
The name Tewkesbury comes from Theoc, the name of a Saxon who founded a hermitage there in the 7th century, and in the Old English language was called Theocsbury. An erroneous derivation from Theotokos enjoyed currency in the monastic period of the town's history. The Battle of Tewkesbury, which took place on 4 May 1471, was one of the decisive battles of the Wars of the Roses.
The town features many notable Medieval, Tudor buildings, but its major claim to fame is Tewkesbury Abbey, a fine Norman abbey church, originally part of a monastery. Tewkesbury claims Gloucestershire's oldest public house, the Black Bear, dating from 1308. The Abbey Cottages, adjacent to Tewkesbury Abbey, were built between 1410 and 1412. They were restored 1967 to 1972 by the Abbey Lawn Trust, a building preservation charity.
Today Tewkesbury has no railway station. The nearest is Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station 2.3 miles from the town center. It was the last mainline station in Gloucestershire to be reopened, as British Rail was being fragmented into Railtrack. The nearby Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway has views of Tewkesbury Abbey en route between Cheltenham Racecourse and Winchcombe. Tewkesbury is served by the M5 and M50 motorways and the A38 and A46 trunk roads. There are frequent direct buses to Ashchurch for Tewkesbury railway station and to Cheltenham.

Painswick is a town and civil parish in the Stroud District in Gloucestershire, England. Originally the town grew from the wool trade, but it is now best known for its parish church's yew trees and the local Rococo Garden. The village is mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold stone. Many of the buildings feature south-facing attic rooms once used as weavers' workshops.
Painswick stands on a hill in the Stroud district, overlooking one of the Five Valleys, between Stroud and Gloucester. It has narrow streets and traditional architecture.
It has a cricket and rugby team and there is a golf course on the outskirts of the town. Painswick Beacon is in the nearby hills.

Stonehouse is a town in the Stroud District of Gloucestershire in southwestern England. It is home to a number of business and industrial parks which are home to the Severnside Dairy operated by Müller and other large companies including Schlumberger, Renishaw, Delphi Automotive, Lister Shearing and Dairy Partners. The town centre is 2.5 miles east of the M5 motorway, junction 13. Stonehouse railway station has a regular train service to London.
The town is situated approximately 9 miles south of Gloucester city centre and 3.5 miles west of central Stroud, though following recent development it is partially contiguous with the Ebley district of Stroud. Stonehouse's population in 2016 was estimated at over 8,000 residents.
Stonehouse was mentioned in Willam the Conqueror's Domesday Book written in 1086. There was a manor house built in stone – quite different from the many wattle and daub buildings that were normally found. And so the area was named Stanhus in the book.
Doverow Hill is a former quarry and there are many surrounding hills and a small cliff that looks out onto the whole of Stonehouse.
The stone which gave the town its name was replaced by red brick as the builder's material of choice . Due to the availability of raw materials in Stonehouse, brickmaking began there in 1856 with evidence of possible prior brickmaking as early as 1839 or 1840 and of as many as thirteen brickmaking sites altogether.
A community centre is located near the Town's High Street, together with a festival of good shops, Post Office (in the supermarket), Town hall, butchers, banks, several food places and a building society. The town is well served by doctors and dentists. Bus services to Gloucester and Stroud are provided by Stagecoach, with other services to Cam, Dursley and the Stanleys.
Good road communication is provided, with the M5 situated with 2 miles of Stonehouse town centre, with the major industrial area located to the west of the town off the A419. The town is served by Stonehouse railway station on the Golden Valley Line, with a good and frequent service to London.
Stonehouse is very well situated for business and business growth due to its central UK location and close proximity to the motorway networks of the M5 & M4. Today Stonehouse has a large number of residential housing estates, including council housing and a small high street.
