Château-Thierry and the World War I American Monument in France
The World War I Chateau-Thierry American Monument, designed by Paul Cret, is located on a hill two miles west of Chateau-Thierry, France, and commands a wide view of the valley of the Marne River. It commemorates the sacrifices and achievements of the Americans and French before and during the Aisne-Marne and Oise-Aisne offensives.
The monument, also known as the American Aisne-Marne Memorial or Le Monument américain à cote 204, consists of an impressive double colonnade rising above a long terrace. On its west facade are heroic sculptured figures representing the United States and France. On its east facade is a map showing American military operations in this region and an orientation table pointing out the significant battle sites.
German advances in late May 1918 led to the 3rd Division joining the fight. Its units assisted French troops in preventing the Germans from crossing the Marne River. The 3rd Division held the south bank of the Marne until the French American counteroffensive forced German withdrawal. It earned the nickname “Rock of the Marne.” At the nearby cemeteries rest those Americans who gave their lives in the service of their country.

파리에서 동쪽으로 약 1시간 거리에 위치한 ‘샤토 티에리’는 파리 시민들의 식수원이기도 한 ‘마흔느 Marne’ 강이 흐르는 구릉지대에 자리잡은 중세 성곽 도시이다. 지리적 군사적 요충지로 로마 정복기부터 요새가 존재하였고, 카롤링거 왕조를 세우는 ‘샤를 마르텔’ 이 메로빙거 왕조 말기의 꼭두각시 왕 '테오도리치 Theodorici’ (초기 프랑스어 Thierry 로 표기)를 감금하였던 장소이기에 이 마을의 이름이 유래하였다는 가설이 있다.
또한, 동화와 우화 작가로 우리나라에도 잘 알려진 ‘장 드 라 퐁텐 Jean de La Fontaine’의 고향으로 유명하다. 베르사유 궁전을 지은 태양 왕 ‘루이 14세’의 어린 왕세자를 위하여1638년에 처음 발간된 ‘우화집 Les fables choisies’은 재미난 동물들의 이야기를 통하여 인간사회의 부조리를 통렬하게 비판한 것으로 전세계의 어린이들에게 가장 많이 읽히는 책 중의 하나이다.
‘샤토 티에리’는 두 번의 중요한 전투가 일어났던 곳인데, 1814년 나폴레옹 1세와 프러시아의 연합군과 벌어진 전투가 중요하고, 1918년 제 1차 세계대전 당시 미국과 독일 사이에서 벌어진 전투가 유명하다.

Located about an hour east of Paris, Chateau Thierry is a medieval walled city located on a hillside where the Marne River, which is also a source of drinking water for Parisians, flows. It is a strategically important location for geography and military purposes, and there is a hypothesis that the name of the town comes from the fact that it was the place where Charles Martel, who founded the Carolingian dynasty, imprisoned the puppet king Theodorici (initially written as Thierry in French) of the late Merovingian dynasty.
It is also famous as the hometown of Jean de La Fontaine, a well-known writer of fairy tales and fables in Korea. First published in 1638 for the young crown prince of Louis XIV, the Sun King who built the Palace of Versailles, ‘Les fables choisies’ is one of the most widely read books for children around the world, as it harshly criticizes the absurdity of human society through the stories of funny animals.
‘Chateau-Thierry’ is the site of two important battles: the battle between Napoleon I and the allied forces of Prussia in 1814, and the battle between the United States and Germany in 1918 during World War I.

To commemorate the horrors of World War I, it is one of 118 monuments erected in villages in Belgium and France in 1920 based on the idea of artist ‘Paul Moreau-Vauthier’ to commemorate the frontline villages along the 700km stretch where the Allied forces launched their final attack.

Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Château-Thierry American Monument & Belleau Wood American Monument
During our cruise in Champagne we visit the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery, Château-Thierry American Monument & Belleau Wood American Monument. It was here that US forces fought one of their bloodiest battles during World War One.
The countryside surrounding Château-Thierry was the site of many great battles during both World Wars and a number of monuments and cemeteries mark the bravery of thousands of Allied soldiers who fought to liberate France and who now lie interred under her soil.
The town was the focal point of the second battle of the Marne (1918), which ended the last German offensive of World War I. A monument to the U.S. soldiers who fought in the battle is just outside the town.
