Voted the best adventure experience in the Cape by KFM, the Ceres Railways company offers one of the best trips to the Elgin Market on their vintage locomotives that have stood the test of time. If you love trains like we do, this one is not an experience to miss.
NB: We did this in winter, and it is likely that summer timings are different.
The journey will take you intricately through the mountains and hills, offering breathtaking views to be cherished. A train ride lasts for an entire day, starting at 07:45. You need to reach there beforehand at about 07:20 to get allocated to your cabin by the train master.
If you have a car, there is dedicated covered parking offered by the Harbour Bridge Hotel. At the time of writing this post, this was entirely free of charge. You may get a ticket but the boom gate is open when you are leaving. Alternatively, you can park in the unshaded parking too.
Once in your seat, you can sit back, relax and enjoy an easy 3h15 trip to the Elgin market. You can sign up for WhatsApp updates throughout the trip with fun competitions to enter. The staff know this route, and so they will have good spots where you will be able to see cool things too (for example, the front of the train!)
We recommend taking a mini picnic basket with card games, books, and music to enjoy during the trip. If you are travelling during winter, take blankets and a jacket for the trip. To enjoy the views, the windows are almost always open, which can mean cold wind on your face 😛
You will reach the Elgin market at about 11h45, where you will find food, cloth, antique and wood sellers. There is food for any dietary choice and some great views to admire here. We loved the space and came across visitors from Elgin town as well. After 2.5 hours at the market, the train departs on the same way back. The ride back can seem a bit repetitive, and we were ready to be home by then, but the views are there to be cherished once again.
We opted for the lounge car seating option that costed about R860 pp. We were seated on comfortable sofa chairs and shared the space with other families and friends who had come together for a trip. We recommend this option, especially if you are travelling with someone else to enjoy a relaxed trip.
There is a cheaper option at R625 and a premium family cabin at R1725 and R3350. Or, you can also hire the entire train if you have a large group!

We went to the SNOW | Ceres, Western Cape | South Africa
We had to catch the last snow before Spring hits in a few days. We set off at 5:40am from Somerset West to just outside Ceres, close to Matroosberg Nature Reserve. This was by far the most snow we've seen in South Africa and had so much fun. It was so great to see families out and about and having fun together. What a great day and special memories!

Discovering the Forgotten Highway on our way to Ceres, having breakfast and then driving through the town. What a busy place with beautiful streets lined with huge trees in the suburbs. Snow near Ceres in August 2021
Snow is a rare sight in South Africa. We had our second heavy snowfall this year on it was a nice and sunny day on Saturday 28 August when we went to experience it. It is a 2.5 hour drive from Cape Town when you leave early (or up to 5 hours if you leave at 10:00 due to traffic). Just look for Matroosberg Private Reserve and you will start seeing snow next to the Bo Swaarmoed Road about 10 to 15 kilometers outside of Ceres in the Western Cape, South Africa.
