Castle Saunderson, County Cavan Ireland - Castles in Ireland
Castle Saunderson, County Cavan, Ireland - Ireland Trip -Travel to Ireland -Castles in Ireland-Irish
When it comes to the different castles in Ireland that one could visit and check, we have to say that there are plenty of those which would take your breath away from the way they look from the outside and might even make you more amazed if you are allowed to come in and see what they have from inside there.
We have been to different castles in Ireland and Northern Ireland before and we usually get amazed by the kind of history carried behind every single one of them - the amount of time it has been standing or some of the myths that might be held about it.
Castle Saunderson is one of those different castles in Ireland which we managed to visit recently and which dates back to the 1840s; a good amount of time! The Saunderson Castle was acquired by the Saunderson family during the Ulster plantation and there was a notable member of the family who was born there known as Edward Saunderson who was the founder of the Ulster Unionist Party. The original castle was inhabited by the O'Reilly's of Breffni and thus was formerly known as Breffni Castle in the 14th century. Later in 1977, Alexander Saunderson sold the castle to a businessman who was willing to transform it into a residence but which never happened and served instead as a hotel until it was damaged by a fire; it has undergone three different fires in the past.
There is actually a long history behind this castle - mostly about moving from one person to another - and there were three different fires taking place in it in the past. The castle served as a modern hotel that is ready to welcome 46 persons and there are also camping areas around the place which will be capable of welcoming about 1,000 campers - lots of changes done to this place.
While being there with the kids, it was just about walking around the castle which seemed empty and not working, reading all those things around it, and enjoying the building as a whole and the green land that is surrounding it - yet too unlucky for us to not be able to come inside and see how this castle looks like from inside there.
There are lots and lots of things that one could see and witness in Ireland and Northern Ireland and from those different attractions, there are different castles that one could enjoy - and which also welcome visitors inside. From those which we have been to before in Ireland, we visited before the Dunluce Castle which is located on cliffs in Northern Ireland and where some scenes and shots from the famous movie series, Game of Thrones, were once taken (
Dunluce Castle was not the only castle we have managed to visit and enjoy but there were others as well, such as the Oranmore Castle in county Galway and which is an old Norman castle ( we have also been to Belfast Castle where we took different pictures, videos, and even brought here a 360 degree video; Belfast Castle is also a good choice for those searching for a different wedding place or want to have an afternoon tea (
There is also the Enniskillen Castle where there is also a museum there for visitors to check and see what it has to offer them and which is located in county Fermanagh close to Lough Erne ( While visiting the Castlewellan Forest Park where there is also a castle along with the different walks, the maze, and many more things as well (
There are lots of wonderful and beautiful places that dates to years and years back but we always fall in love with castles - no reason why - maybe because they resemble fairy tales, beautiful buildings, and another world that is more prestigious and different - which we believe was the same case with the Saunderson Castle when it was still occupied by its first owners or even those who came directly after them.
Since we have mentioned how much we love fairy tales then we should also point out to that event we have attended in Portadown People's Park which was called Fairytale Forest and which the kids enjoyed following up with it and searching for their favorite characters in order to come to the end point and get their reward (
There are lots of places that one could actually visit while being in Ireland and after getting the chance to look at this beautiful castle. From those which we definitely recommend on the top of the list, you could visit and check the Giant's Causeway - which also took its part in GOT movie - ( and which will offer you a magnificent view, and you could also visit the Ballintubber Abbey which is located in county Mayo and which we also love because of being placed in front an old building (

Cavan County Museum - WWI Trench Tour - Ireland
Taking the kids to a different kind of experience - or different kind of museum in this case - we decided to head to Cavan County Museum where they would be able to enjoy the WWI Trench Tour inside and try to build a picture about how it all went back then - we also enjoyed visiting this place and going through this experience.
Cavan County Museum is a museum that is dedicated to the history of county Cavan; it aims at collecting, conserving, and displaying the material heritage and culture of county Cavan and its environs. Inside the museum there are different galleries that display different things for the public and every single place might need a special visit in order to be inspected and everything inside it be fully seen.
There are different exhibitions held inside the Cavan County Museum - we were even surprised by all these but didn't get the chance to visit and enjoy them all - which include the GAA history, the medieval times, the great famine, the Farnham gallery, the pighouse collection, the nun's story, the Percy French, folklife gallery, the boat room, the archaeology room, the historical sites, as well as the WWI Trench experience which is the one we headed to and knew more about.
Seeing the Trench sign on the outside of this tour, we decided to head inside and see what this place carries for us. There are actually several things in this place that look exactly like the time of the war and which we were very excited to bring our imaginations to life through and see how the soldiers used to sleep, eat, and even see the small clinic where they were getting their treatment at.
Once you enter the trench, you will be placed in small passage where the soldiers used to hide from the shooting and shoot back whenever needed - there are also some recorded sentences which were said by the soldiers and you will even hear some shootings in the background as some kind of delivering the feeling of being truly in the place - and from this passage one will get the chance to come to those small rooms which were used for special things.
After entering the trench and walking a little bit within this thin passage, you will then move forward to reach the clinic where the soldiers were receiving their treatment and curing their wounds from the war - it is so small, thanks God they managed to treat them - and then we kept moving forward to reach the place or the room where the soldiers used to make the plans and were their head used to sleep - seems not so comfortable but the kids thought it was =)
One question kept coming to our minds - how did they manage to do everything successfully in such very small places?! =) - it was really interesting to get in a place that tells us how it was all and the WWI soldiers used to make their plans and pass their days - I think the kids got really excited as well about wearing those clothes and hats of the soldiers - gave them a little bit of the feeling =)
If you are willing to visit this place in county Cavan, Ireland, then make sure that you are heading there anytime from Saturday to Tuesday from 10 AM to 5 PM, other than that you might find it closed, and also make sure to check the working times during any holidays because you might find a change of plan as well.
For those who will be already in county Cavan to visit the Cavan County Museum, or even for any other different reason, there are still other places which one might pass by, such as visiting the Saunderson Castle which we have been to as well ( as well as visiting the Cavan Cathedral, going to Kingscourt Park, Virginia for theater and lake, going to Cavan Burren Park, Dun A Ri Forest Park, Cloughoughter Castle, Jacobean Church, and many other things which might differ from one person to another according to what every single one prefers to see and come closer to.
All in all, we could say that it was not the excitement of the kids but we were also excited about getting the experience of the World War One just like them and see how the soldiers used to handle their days during the war - sleeping, eating, being looked after, and all this different things that shaped their everyday life.
We have to mention that Ireland is filled with different destinations that one could go to and visit, you just have to pick the city or the county and make a place with all those different locations that are close to where you are going to stay. Of course it will be always easier for Irish people who could keep visiting places every now and then and not like those tourists who come from other parts of the world.
You could also check some of our latest videos from trips in Ireland and Northern Ireland like the one in Crawfordsburn in county Down, Dublin ( or any of the other ones.
