Lobito, Angolese city, Benguela Railway, Catumbela Estuary, sandspit, harbour, port
Lobito is a town and municipality in Benguela Province in Angola.[1] It is located on the Atlantic Coast north of Catumbela Estuary. 177
It dates from 1905 and owes its existence to the bay of the same name having been chosen as the sea terminus of the Benguela railway to the far interior, passing through Luau to Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The city is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The population is 324,050 (2014) in an area of 3,648 km². The municipality consists of the communes Canjala, Egipto Praia and Lobito.[2]
The city was founded on September 2, 1913 and holds an annual celebration for the occasion.
Portuguese rule[edit]
Lobito, was built on a sandspit and reclaimed land, with one of Africa’s finest natural harbours, protected by a 5 km long sandspit. The old municipality (concelho) was created in 1843 by the Portuguese administration. The town was also founded in 1843 by order of Maria II of Portugal, and its harbour works were begun in 1903. Large developments, however, were not stimulated until the completion in 1928 of the important Benguela Railway, which connected Portuguese Angola with the Belgian Congo. Under Portuguese rule, the port was one of Angola’s busiest, exporting agricultural produce from the interior and handling transit trade from the mines of southeastern Belgian Congo and of Northern Rhodesia. Fishing, tourism and services were also important. The carnival in Lobito was also one of the most renowned and popular in Portuguese Angola.[3] It wasn't until 1843 that Maria II of Portugal approved the birth of the town, which had by then been known as Catumbela das Ostras (Catumbela of Oysters)[4]
After independence from Portugal[edit]
Port of Lobito
After the April 25, 1974 Carnation Revolution in Lisbon, Angola was offered independence. Lobito’s port activities were highly limited by disruptions to railway transit and high insecurity during the Angolan Civil War (1975–2002). With peace and stability, in the 2000s, Lobito started the process of reconstruction and resumed its path to development.

Angola travel video 4K HD HQ backpacker trekking adventure nature waterfall visit drone africa visit
Angola is a beautiful country, but is not on most people’s travel bucket list. In this video for Travel to Angola I will share why this country is definitely worth a visit, where you should go and what you would need to know before you go. Luanda is Angola’s capital and has 8 million inhabitants. For many years Luanda was the most expensive city in the world. This is hard to believe if you see all the poverty. Unfortunately, there is a big distinction between rich and poor. While driving through the city you will see big mansions and modern apartment buildings followed by very small houses made of wood, clay and brick. When you travel to Angola, just before you land, you can see the first favelas. Since I have spent most of my time in Luanda with family, I haven’t seen much of the city in terms of touristic landmarks. However, I have been told that there are not that many things to visit in Luanda, besides a few museums and the fortress (“Fortaleza de Sao Miguel”). Close to Luanda is the island Mussulo, which is officially not an island but a peninsula. The beaches are much nicer here than at Ilha do Luanda and there are plenty of resorts and beach houses. From Luanda city, Mussulo is only a short boat ride away and it is a great escape. One of the bars I went to and which has a beautiful beach too, is Barssulo. The Quedas de Kalandula or Kalandula Falls. The road got worse the more we drove into the provinces away from Luanda. It was part of the adventure! However, I was glad that we had an organized tour with a driver and guide and didn’t need to drive ourselves. But depending on your driving skills and how adventurous you are, you could rent a car as well and drive yourself. The Kalendula Falls are 105 metres high and 400 metres wide, and are known as one of the largest waterfalls in Africa. Our trip went further through the province to massive rock formations, called Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo. It is impressive to see the rocks rising up in the distance once you drive towards them. At a certain point, we could climb to the top of one of the rocks, at the village Pungo Andongo and enjoy the 360 view. On our one day trip from Luanda, we first made a stop at the Miradouro da Lua / “Moon Lookout” viewpoint. The rocks are next to the ocean so it gives a beautiful view. For locals, this is also a popular place to watch the sunset. It is only 40 kms from Luanda. Travel to Angola: Travel Video. I hope the above tips are useful to you to prepare yourself for your trip to Angola. Or if you hadn’t made any plans yet, to add this country to your To Go-List! If you keep a few things in mind, like safety, health and transport options, and travel smart, you will enjoy the beautiful places this country has to offer. To give you a further impression of the country and my trip, check out my travel video! The quality of Angola’s food is very good. There is lots of fish (bacalao is the most popular one), seafood (big shrimps, crabs and lobsters), and meat (try the pica pau!). For vegetarians there are enough options too, like sweet potato and “Banana Pao” (= Bread Banana). One thing to be careful of is not to drink the water. Buy water bottles instead. Travel to Angola visa: You will need to apply for a tourist visa before travelling to Angola. You should apply for the visa online a few weeks in advance since it can sometimes take a while. For more information to apply for your visa and which documents are required, you can check the government’s website:
The online application is easy, but you just need to make sure that you upload your documents (like passport copy) in the right format. Once the visa has been granted, you will need to print the visa grant notification and take this with you to Angola. Upon arrival at the airport, you will need to pay 120 USD in cash and after that you will receive the visa in your passport. And then, the adventure begins. You are ready to go and explore the country! Quissama National Park: However, the best part of the day was the safari at the Quissama National Park. Since we visited the park in the afternoon, we didn’t have a chance to see elephants. For that, you would need to do the safari in the early morning, because in the afternoon it is probably too hot for these giants to walk around! Therefore, next time I would visit the park for 2 days. But we were lucky to see many other animals: zebra’s, giraffes, kudos (a kind of very cute deer with big ears!), wildebeest, buffalo, antelope, deer, and lots of monkeys. River Kwanza Boat trip: After the viewpoint we continued our journey to the Kwanza Lodge, where we did a 2 hour boat trip on the Kwanza river. Unfortunately we didn’t see any crocs but we did see lots of birds, and some curious blue and black monkeys in the trees. The Kwanza Lodge also offers wooden bungalow houses and has a pool, in case you are interested to spend more time here. Keep Angola in your bucket list. Hiking, fun in africa.
