Montecassino Abbey - The Birthplace of Monasticism in Europe!

The Abbey of Montecassino is one of the most well known Abbeys in the world. The Abbey is perched high on the slope of the 1700 foot rocky hill known as Monte Cassino, about 80 miles southeast of Rome, Italy.

The immense fortress-like complex is ensconced in thick, lush forests which shroud its lower walls. Because of the periodic destructions the abbey has endured, very little remains of the original building. Most of the massive complex dates from its reconstruction in the years after World War II.

In 529 Saint Benedict chose this mountain to build a monastery that would host him and those monks following him on the way from Subiaco. Paganism was still present here, but he managed to turn the place into a well-structured Christian monastery where everybody could have the dignity they deserved through praying and working.

The Abbey has met destruction many times, and has always come out of its ruins stronger. In 577 the Lombards destroyed it, then Saracens in 887. In 1349 a violent earthquake occurred and in February 1944, an Allied bombing almost flatted it. The Allies had gotten incorrect information that the Germans were occupying the abbey, which turned out to not be true.

The Abbey was rebuilt after the war, and today can be seen from afar, making it a distinct landmark of the region.

Places to see in ( Cassino - Italy )

Cassino is a comune in the province of Frosinone, Italy, at the southern end of the region of Lazio, the last City of the Latin Valley. Cassino is located at the foot of Monte Cairo near the confluence of the Gari and Liri rivers. The city is best known as the site of the Abbey of Montecassino and the Battle of Monte Cassino during World War II, which resulted in huge Allied and German casualties as well as the near total destruction of the town itself. It is also home to the University of Cassino. Cassino has a population of 35,860 As of August 2015, making it the second largest town in the province.

Cassino's origins lie in the Volscan settlement of Casinum, sited atop the hill of Cassino near Monte Cairo, five kilometres to the north. Casinum passed under the control of the Samnites, but the Romans eventually gained control of Casinum, establishing a fortified colony there in 312 BC. During the Roman era the most venerated god was Apollo, whose temple rose up on Monte Cassino, where today stands the abbey. At least once during Punic Wars, Hannibal passed near Casinum. Casinum was also the site of a villa presumed to belong to Marcus Terentius Varro.

Cassino is located at the southern end of the region of Lazio and at the northern end of the historical region called Terra di Lavoro. The city centre is set in a valley at the foot of Monte Cassino and Monte Cairo. Cassino is distant 123 km (76 mi) from Rome, 101 km (63 mi) from Naples, 28 km (17 mi) from the coast (Gulf of Gaeta) and 24 km (15 mi) from the Parco nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise. The town is crossed by the rivers Gari and Rapido that join themselves in the area of the Varronian Thermal Baths; forward, in the frazione of Sant'Angelo in Theodice, the Gari joins the Liri, becoming Garigliano, the river that marks the border between the regions Lazio and Campania.

Monte Cassino Italy - World War two History

As a New Zealander, I always wanted to visit Monte Cassino in Italy. During the second world war, there were a number of battles in this town. The Italian effort took place between January and May 1944. During that time the Abbey on the mountain was severely damaged. The Germans were in the area and they established what was named the Gustav Line.

The Gustav Line was from the Tyrrhenian all the way to the Adriatic coast. Monte Cassino itself overlooked Highway six and obstructed a clear road to Rome. There were massive air raids in February and the abbey was almost destroyed. These air raids were led by the American airforce. The Germans eventually took over the abbey and holed up there for some time. A number of allied armies attempted to take the Germans out but most were doomed to failure. New Zealand, Australian and Canadian troops were involved and many were killed in these battles. I knew a couple of New Zealand soldiers who returned safely to New Zealand and related some stories. Therefore my desire was to visit the area and see for myself how difficult this would have been in those days. Sadly the local museum had closed down and I am not certain it will ever reopen. The area was well worth the visit and the Italians look after the cemetery in the town and can be very proud of the upkeep and memory of the brave people who lost their lives there.
The abbey has now been totally rebuilt and is well worth the visit.
