#6. Bologna National Gallery
Whilst some galleries display works from a variety of countries, the Bologna National Gallery contains works that are related someway to the Emilian region and the city – These paintings range in age as far back as the 13th century, up to the 18th century.
Located within the confines of the old university complex, the museum is within easy reach of the city centre and the main Piazza Maggiore.
Split into two main sections, the museum contains the Accademia Clementina and the Gallery of the Academy of Fine Arts; the first of which contains a myriad of fantastic 13th century Byzantine paintings and the latter contains later works.
#5. La Piazzola Market
This historic market has been held in Bologna for hundreds of years and continues to prove increasingly popular with both the locals and tourists.
Located in the Piazza dell Agosto which can be found to the north of the city centre, the market features over 400 different stalls and is a truly fascinating sight to witness.
Here you can find practically anything for sale from clothes, shoes, fashion accessories, flowers, pottery and jewellery.
You will find the atmosphere captivating – The locals will haggle and shout, you will smell the different foods, spices and creations, and you will see a wider variety of different colors on display.
#4. Monte della Guardia
The longest portico in the world leads up to the top of Monte della Guardia.
This forested hill provides a fantastic escape from the city and reaches a height of approximately 300m.
You can find the hill to the south west of Bologna in close proximity to the Reno River.
Walk the length of the portico and climb the slopes to reach the top of this wonderful hill.
At the top you will be greeted with unparalleled panoramic views of Bologna and the surrounding regions.
Furthermore, the delightful Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca is perched on top of the hill and is a fantastic church to visit in its own right.
#3. Santuario di Madonna di San Luca
As one of the oldest churches in Bologna, the Sanctuary of Madonna was first created in 1194 but not finished until 1765. This church sits on top of the Monte della Guardia and offers great views of the city of Bologna.
Towering over the surroundings, the main building features a central basilica and is created from an orange/pink material with green domes; its style is considered to be Baroque.
Inside, the sanctuary features a plethora of fantastic decorations and detailed frescos that depict important religious scenes.
Furthermore the is also an icon of the Virgin Mary that was supposedly painted by Luke the Evangelist.
#2. Torre Prendiparte
As previously mentioned, Bologna was once full of tall, narrow stone towers during the Middle Ages – Only a handful still remain today in their original shape and design, one of which is the Torre Prendiparte.
This particular tower was constructed during the 12th century and stands at 59.50 metres high.
Located on the Piazza Prendiparte, the tower lies close to the two leaning towers and the Piazza Maggiore.
It now hosts a bed and breakfast establishment which offers a unique experience, but the levels of the tower are also still open and you can climb to the top and explore this wonderful building.

#1. Towers of Bologna
Who would've thought that the famous tower at Pisa is not the only leaning tower? Bologna actually has a pair of leaning towers and one is taller than the iconic campanile! Bologna actually has a myriad of towers, but the two tall examples standing in the Piazza di Porta Ravegnana are the most legendary.
Asinelli and Garisenda are two tall towers that stand next to each other and are both named after important Italian families.
Asinelli stands at 97.2m and was used as a prison and a stronghold. Reserve your tickets for the Torre degli Asinelli in time. Via the link in the description you can buy your tickets for a reduced rate, it concerns an entrance ticket, in addition you will taste traditional regional products. Our tip is to book the tickets in advance, this way you avoid the crowds in the city. If you are ultimately unable to make it, cancellation is possible free of charge for up to 24 hours.
Garisenda stands only at 48m but has an extremely noticeable tilt and overhang of 3.2m. Climb the towers for unparalleled views of Bologna and see the epic landscapes stretching for miles around.

Welcome to Alde Soha Channel @Aldesoha
Bringing the medieval atmosphere to the present, Bologna is one of the most beautiful destinations to travel in Europe for individuals who enjoy cultural tours. The city, where you can discover valuable historical treasures all around and enchant you with its culinary culture, also houses a large student population. In this way, the architecturally unique city of Northern Italy offers its guests colorful entertainment opportunities.
Bologna is located in the north of Italy. The city was established in the region between the wide and fertile Po Plain and the Apennine Mountains. The historical settlement, which stands out with its cultural richness, is also very close to the intersection of the Reno and Sava rivers.
Bologna's neighbors; It consists of relatively small settlements such as Anzola dell'Emilia, Casalecchio di Reno and Castel Maggiore. It is 82 kilometers away from Florence, which can be described as the nearest large settlement.
Bologna spends the whole year under the influence of the humid subtropical climate. Therefore, while the temperature values rise in the summer months, the weather conditions become more stable. In the winter and spring months, precipitation becomes more frequent. Even in the first few months of the year, the city is covered with a thin snow cover, and the temperatures can drop below 0 °C. However, this does not prevent travelers who like calmness from flocking to the city. Because while there are no long queues in front of the touristic centers at this time of the year, the city takes on a completely different look with the sparkle of the Christmas markets that started to be established in the last weeks of autumn and the excitement of the New Year.
The period between May and September is defined as the tourism season of Bologna. At this time of the year, a lively atmosphere dominates all the important squares of the city. Moreover, the number of cultural events held in the city during the summer season increases considerably. Travelers also have the opportunity to use their vacation time more effectively and to see more places with longer days.

Passing under the Porta Govese or Torresotto dei Piella you reach the famous window on the Canale delle Moline and the bridge, both overlooking the canal. This corner of the city is known as little Venice. Looking out among the buildings, you can see one of the few stretches of running water, which was not covered with asphalt between the beginning of the twentieth century and the postwar period. Canale delle Moline is the extension of Canale di Reno. For most of its route, the channel is locked between the houses; in the past, it has long been hidden from view. Now it is possible to see it through small windows via Oberdan, via Malcontenti, and via Piella.

n Venice, it’s hard to avoid the famous canals and the glamorous gondola rides, but there’s another Italian city whose historic waterworks are very easy to miss. Bologna’s canals aren’t nearly as famous, possibly because many of them were covered, and later, roads and buildings were built over them, leaving most of these medieval channels hidden from view.
In the 12th century, canals were built on the city’s major rivers, the Savena and Reno, complete with a sophisticated hydraulic system of locks and pipes. The network was extensive, spanning more than 37 miles. The waterways through the city were used for silk manufacturing and trade, and Bologna became a major hub for silk, along with the city’s flourishing tobacco and flour trade.
Many of the canals were used for transporting goods, while others also carried people. But across the centuries, as the economy changed, the major sections of the canal system were covered with roads and parking lots, especially after the end of World War II.
Today, it’s a well-known secret that best spot to see one of the few remaining sections of the historic canals is through the small “Canal Window” on Via Piella. From the unassuming street, you can peek out over a portion of Canale delle Moline, which was an uncovered part of the network, later flanked by houses and buildings obscuring it from view. The water flows between brightly colored houses on one side and the walls of an unpainted brick building on the other. It’s a quaint and picturesque sight, which is why for a “secret” window, Finestrella di Via Piella gets an awful lot of visitors.

Bologna is the lively, historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy. Its Piazza Maggiore is a sprawling plaza lined with arched colonnades, cafes and medieval and Renaissance structures such as City Hall, the Fountain of Neptune and the Basilica di San Petronio. Among the city’s many medieval towers are the Two Towers, leaning Asinelli and Garisenda.
Bologna is the largest city (and the capital) of the Emilia-Romagna Region in Northern Italy. Bologna is the seventh most populous city in Italy, located in the heart of a metropolitan area. Bologna is home to numerous prestigious cultural, economic and political institutions as well as one of the most impressive trade fair districts in Europe. In 2000 it was declared European capital of culture and in 2006, a UNESCO city of music. The city of Bologna was selected to participate in the Universal Exposition of Shanghai 2010 together with 45 other cities from around the world. Bologna is also one of the wealthiest cities in Italy, often ranking as one of the top cities in terms of quality of life in the country: in 2011 it ranked 1st out of 107 Italian cities.
Bologna is situated on the edge of the Po Plain at the foot of the Apennine Mountains, at the meeting of the Reno and Savena river valleys. As Bologna's two main watercourses flow directly to the sea, the town lies outside of the drainage basin of the River Po. The Province of Bologna stretches from the western edge of the Po Plain on the border with Ferrara to the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The centre of the town is 54 metres (177 ft) above sea level (while elevation within the municipality ranges from 29 metres (95 ft) in the suburb of Corticella to 300 metres (980 ft) in Sabbiuno and the Colle della Guardia). The Province of Bologna stretches from the Po Plain into the Apennines; the highest point in the province is the peak of Corno alle Scale (in Lizzano in Belvedere) at 1,945 metres (6,381 ft) above sea level.

Old and beautiful, gritty and vibrant in equal parts, Bologna sightseeing makes for curious, long wanders. The compact maze of old streets is the heart of Bologna tourism and why people immediately become enchanted with the city. The three connecting open squares are the very core of the action. Food recommendations when visiting #bologna
An amazing 48 hours in Bologna ✨🇮🇹
Here’s our recommendations for what to eat, drink and see!
RESTAURANTS:
-Sfoglia Rina, very authentic and popular restaurant. We had the pappardelle ragù and it was incredible
- Zerocinquantello Osteria, this is the perfect lunch spot with outdoor seating right off the Piazza Maggiore. You have ‘Tigelle’ bread with meats and cheeses to build your own sandwiches
-La salsamenteria, they have the best tortellini which you can either have in cream Parmesan sauce or a traditional broth
GELATERIA:
- Cremeria la Vecchia Stalla, this place was really busy and I can see why because the ice cream was absolutely incredible
BARS:
-Camera a Sud, a really quirky bar with nice outdoor seating and really good cocktails
-Hosteria del Vicolo, really pretty bar with a great atmosphere
-Bottega Ranocchi, a cute little bar with outdoor seating, it was easy for us to get seats on the Sunday but on the Saturday this street was soo busy so might be best to get there early
SIGHTS:
- La Piccola Venezia, this is a little viewpoint of the Canale di Reno which is called ‘Little Venice’ because of its similarities to Venice
- Piazza Maggiore, the main Piazza that had live music every night we were there. Also look out for the Fountain of Neptune with some interesting statues 🧜♀️
-Mercato delle Erbe, amazing indoor market with local produce

Sunflower field in Bologna, Italy #shorts
In Bologna, sunflowers bloom everywhere. Summer, from June to July, is undoubtedly the best season to explore the nature leaving behind the city’s gloom in search of the most “Insta-worthy” spots.
Be it on your vespa or your bike, or even on the bus, Casalecchio di Reno, near San Biagio, is the ideal place to start your expedition in search of the golden expanses. Just 12 km from the city centre, the sunflower fields can be reached in 30’ minutes by car or by bus (tper 89).
