In the famous Asterix & Obelix comics, Brittany is the restive last corner of Gaul that refuses to submit to the Romans - and a little of this can be felt in reality, too: the black-and-white Breton flag flies everywhere and the region's own Breton culture and language are proudly cultivated.
In short: In Brittany, the clocks go a little differently than in the rest of France. Take advantage of a vacation in Brittany to get to know this fascinating province!
The weather in Brittany is extremely changeable. Even in summer, always pack a sweater or jacket and take an umbrella. If a planned hike along the coast threatens to fall through, wait a day: then the sun can shine again.
Don't miss the Breton cuisine. The staple food of the region is the galette, a buckwheat pancake, which tastes more tart than the widespread crêpes and is topped with different ingredients. The classic is the galette complête with ham, cheese and fried egg. The best accompaniment is cider in a cup. #bestplaces #brittany

Travel in France: Driving into Cancale - Brittany's Seafront Oyster Lover's Heaven!

The best way to travel in France is by rental car. And the best oysters in France are in Cancale in the French region of Brittany. Driving north up the D76, we take a right onto the Route Panoramique to take in some views of the coastline and oyster beds stretching out into the ocean and the wonderful seaside town of Cancale.

Cancale, Brittany - France 4K Travel Channel

Cancale is a holiday location in the bay of Mont Saint Michel, approx. 10 km eastern of Saint Malo. Cancale is famous for its oyster farm. Here you find the best oysters of France. Already the Romans supplied themselves with the excellent oysters of Cancale.
In the Middle Ages, ships loaded with oysters regularly left the port of Cancale in the direction of the Rouen. From there, the oysters came finally to Paris.
Already in the 13th century Etienne Boileau describes his Livre of the Métiers the exorbitant prices, which the ships had to pay as levy to the port of Rouen.
King Francis I of France was so enthusiastic about the oysters that he gave Cancale a city charter officially in 1545.
Also the court of Versailles appreciated the oysters from Cancale, and so it is not surprising that Louis XIII and Louis XIV confirmed the municipal law. Since the oysters could not be shipped at once, they were stored in a ship which was filled with seawater. As of the 18th century, the oysters were conserved into vinegar. The delicate flavor loss did not prevent the court of Versailles to get oysters delivered several times a week.
The high demand led to unbridled exploitation of oyster beds. In order to prevent their destruction, the Admiralty arranged the first restrictions on August 16, 1766. The export trade with the oysters was banned for the period from May to August. Still today one hears, that one shall not eat any oysters in months with R.
However, the restriction had little effect, so that the natural occurrence of Cancalese flat oyster was almost exhausted in the middle of the 19th century. So one started with the first attempts to cultivate rock oysters imported from Portugal and Japan with 1858.

Travel in France: Cancale - Oyster Capital of the Northern Brittany Coast.

The best oysters in France are in Cancale on the northern coast of Brittany (Bretagne). Just a stone's throw from St. Malo, the Mont Saint-Michel and the French region of Normandy, the oyster beds stretch WAY far out into the sea.

The oyster market (Marché aux Huîtres de Cancale) is the perfect place to grab a plate of some of the world's best oysters. They don't get fresher or more delicious than this! And you'll find the lowest prices in France here as well as many, many varieties to choose from.

Sit on the seawall or at the picnic table with your oysters and enjoy the view of the ocean, the two islands just off the coast (L’île des mouettes and île de Rimains) and hopefully a nice, clear blue sky. And maybe a bottle of wine as well!
