Napa Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Napa
Things you'll want to know before you travel to the Napa Valley in California. The best time of year to come: September & October. Grape Harvest seasons. June/July/August is HOT! Really Hot in the day like 90-100F. But cold at night... in the 50's. The morning fog during June through August is deceptive; temperatures get toasty once it burns off
2. Napa is Expensive: Think Disneyland prices, Hotels, Food, and wine tasting. Wine tastings cost $20-$75
3. Napa is more than the city of Napa: The whole Napa Valley, St Helena, Calistoga, Sonoma too
4. Getting to Napa: Ultimately Driving, but you can fly in to
Sacramento, Oakland, SFO, SJC. Napa is located 40 miles south of Sacramento and 50 miles north of San Francisco. About an hour drive from each. You can also take a bus to Napa from Oakland and San Francisco.
5. Public transit is non-existant, but there are wine tours if you don't want to drive.
6. Reservations: Make reservations, for winery tastings, and dinner. You'll thank me later.
7. Wake up early: Especially on the weekends if you are visiting the wineries, go to the busy ones before noon. After 12 is when they get crazy busy.
8. No nightlife -- all the wineries close at 5-6pm to prevent drunk driving. Only thing to do a night is eat. And you better do that before 9pm.
9. Food: Best food is in the town of Napa itself. Think about a picnic lunch from V. Sattui or Dean and Deluca (Both in St. Helena)
10. Don't drink too much -- particularly on a hot day... the wine goes to your head faster. Many tasting rooms have a place that you can spit your wine. It's okay to spit it out after tasting, the more you spit, the more you can taste.

Calistoga, the best wine town in the Napa Valley
The town of Calistoga is at very north end of the Napa Valley and perhaps for that reason the town moves at a much slower pace than the rest of the Valley. It is definitely a laid back town and famous its hot springs, mud baths, and spas. Things have't changed much in Calistoga, the town look very much the same as it did many years ago.
The fanciest lodging in Calistoga is on the Silverado Trail. It is the Solage Calistoga resort with it Michelin rated Solbar Restaurant. In downtown Calistoga there are plenty of conformable lodging spots, these include the Stevenson, Mount View Hotel, and Calistoga Spa and Hot springs. Wine Travelers to Calisotag will find many choices in restaurant with a variety of cuisines from elegant to casual.
There are plenty of things to do in and around Calistoga. You can follow our Calistoga Wine Trail that leads to several very good wineries in the Calistoga AVA. Most of these wineries are small and family owned which usually means a very friendly and warm atmosphere in the tasting room.
On Tubbs Lane don't miss the Old Faithful Geyser. The geyser erupts every 30 minutes with out a miss. In town the best coffee joint is Calistoga Roastery. Grab a cup and walk down the street browse the books at Copperfield. Best place to buy your a picnic lunch is the Cal Mart market weather it be a deli sandwich or something from the salad bar. The Calistoga Depot is always a popular spot for boutique shopping. Spending time in Calistoga is always a fun and rewarding wine country getaway
