10 Cheapest Places to live in California.

10 Cheapest Places to live in California.

Buying a house can be hard. If you are thinking about California and don't need to be in one of the major cities, this list is for you.
Nobody wants a giant mortgage but in most of California, that is what you are going to get.

If you enjoy these videos I would love to hear about it. Most of these videos are made to help people who are thinking about relocating, looking for real estate, or just wanting to learn about the United States. We look at the best and worst cities, states, towns, and neighborhoods in the United States. But, most of the time focus on the negative side of locations. If you only want some happy positive information about a city, town, or state, I would suggest looking up local mortgage and real estate companies or maybe the locations website. They are trying to sell you something so it will be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and a bunch of smoke up your skirt. They won't tell you about crime, poverty, bail bondsmen, or insurance you'll need because of natural disasters. I will. And I will try and make it entertaining.

Old US Route 99 - Los Angeles, CA to Calexico, CA - High Speed Driving Video

Hi Folks! Here is Old US Route 99 from Los Angeles to Calexico at the Mexican border. If you know my videos already, I love US Route 99, as well as other old routes. You can find my Ridge Route videos here:

LA to Bakersfield

Bakersfield to LA

As you may or may not know, US 99 was a route that stretched from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. For its length through California, it was called, “California’s Main Street” because of its vital importance to both travel and commerce. US 99 traveled through every type of climate and topography that California offers.

Fewer of you may be familiar with the stretch that I have covered here than say, the US 99 from Los Angeles through central and northern California. This section, to me, is just as amazing as the northern sections because it went from urban Los Angeles through the Inland Empire, through Coachella Valley, and then through Imperial Valley. These areas of California are so vastly different that, well, you’ll just have to see for yourself. It’s cool that you’re starting in Imperial Valley because you’ll see little towns and then really wide open spaces that Old US Route 99 made its way through, carrying millions of travelers of old to their destinations. Your parents and grandparents surely took US 99 if they were anywhere in California back then.

As with US 99 in central and northern California, parts of it are buried, but this time, under Interstate 10, rather than Interstate 5. Much of the route exists through most of the Inland Empire, but as we go through San Gorgonio Pass, in a lot of tighter places, Old US Route 99 and already used the very best alignment, so they simply built Interstate 10 over it, during parts of US 99 forever. In this video, I make it clear when we are on the original route, and when we jump onto Interstate 10. But luckily, I’m guessing because of Southern California’s arid climate, the large portions of US 99 and its precursor routes that weren’t buried by Interstate 10 still remain in reasonably good condition, with maybe a few bumps here and there, which you will undoubtedly feel along with me.

Some of the portions of road that I show were not always easy to get to, but I never broke any laws getting to them, so if you are determined to see some of these stretches yourself, you can still find them with the exception of Roberts Road in Banning, which is about to be demolished for a development. I feel very lucky to have filmed on it because it has a long portion of the original concrete slab that comprised most of the route before US 99 was later widened to accommodate more lanes.

Sadly, the Whitewater Bridge shown in this video was permanently damaged by the water runoff from Tropical Storm Hilary in August of 2023. I am very thankful to have shot the footage of this historical bridge while making this video on July 27, 2023, just twenty days before it was damaged beyond repair.

Please pardon the spot that is on my windshield. Just a few months ago, I got a rock kicked up from an eighteen wheeler’s tire in the Grapevine that chipped the windshield. I’m still not quite ready to spend the $750 to replace it.

I hope that you enjoy watching this video. It was my great pleasure finding the route and recording it for all of our collective posterity. The reverse direction of this video is already done. Just search my channel for it if you’d like to watch it. And I want to thank you sincerely for watching these videos. I really enjoy making them, and it’s a kick to know that there are some other people out there who love this stuff too. -Fred Herrman - “Rapid Topography“

Please note that this is one of the videos on Rapid Topography that will have mid-roll ad breaks. I only add these mid-roll ads to the larger project that I do since they take a lot of time and effort and gasoline. The majority of daily drive on my channel do not have mid-roll ad breaks.

Calexico, California | What is it like to live there?

Driving through and exploring the border town of Calexico. This town is located in southern Imperial County, California. Situated on the Mexican border, it is linked economically with the much larger city of Mexicali, the capital of the Mexican state of Baja California. It is about 122 miles east of San Diego and 62 miles west of Yuma, Arizona.

Calexico, along with six other incorporated Imperial County cities, forms part of the larger populated area known as the Imperial Valley.

The name of the city is a portmanteau of California and Mexico. The originally proposed names were Santo Tomas or Thomasville. Mexicali is a similarly named city directly across the international border from Calexico, its name being a portmanteau of the words Mexico and California.

USA / Mexico Border Wall - Calexico, California

This video showcases the USA and Mexico border wall looks like in Calexico / Mexicali.

What Happens When You Cross the Border Into Mexico?

Crossing the border into Mexico via Mexicali I is fast and easy. Head down to Caesar Chavez Blvd in Calexico and go straight through the last traffic light. You will pass through some new booths that will be used for custom in the future. Then as you pass through the border wall turn left to park at the FMM office. There you will be inspected and get your FMM stamped.

Then proceeded back to the line of traffic crossing under the Mexico sign. The process for us on a weekday morning has always been fast and easy.

Imperial Valley California | El Centro

El Centro in Spanish means The Center. El Centro was founded in 1906 by Holt and Barker who purchased the land on which the city was built. Initially, El Centro was a part of San Diego County.

El Centro is the largest American city to lie entirely below sea level. At an average of 50 feet below sea level, it is one of the lowest elevations in the continental United States. The area allows water from the Colorado River to flow there by gravity. Many farmers settled in the area when the water from the Colorado River was diverted via canals to irrigate the desert valley.

The nearby Algodones Dunes, the largest dune field in the US, draws thousands of visitors each year, mainly for off-road driving. The Salton Sea lies 30 miles (48 km) north of El Centro, but water sports enthusiasts head to the Colorado River, 50 miles (80 km) to the east near Yuma, Arizona

Mexico (the border city of Mexicali, Baja California) is 10 miles (16 km) away, which offers big city amenities like museums, a zoo and a sports/convention center.

El Centro Imperial Valley California has a desert climate and is the southernmost desert city below sea level in the continental United States.

Driving To Baja, Mexico Through the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing - May 2023 Update

Driving To Baja, Mexico Through the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing - May 2023 Update
May 2023

This is an update from my previous video driving to Baja, Mexico through the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing. Mexico Federal Hwy. 5 is the main artery to get Baja, particularly towards the east or Sea of Cortez side of Baja. For those who have not done this drive, connecting to Hwy. 5 after crossing the Calexico-Mexicali West Border crossing can be an adventure by itself particularly those driving around Mexicali solely relying on GPS.

This video will show my preferred route to connect to Hwy. 5 after crossing the Calexico-Mexicali West Border Crossing, including helpful landmarks to look for. It starts by staying at the Calz. de los Presidentes after getting out of the border crossing facility. At the 2nd traffic light on Calz. de los Presidentes, turn left to Calz. James W Stone. At the first traffic light at Calz. James W Stone, turn right to Blvd. Lopez Mateos. Stay on Blvd. Lopez Mateos until the reach the monument of Sanchez Taboada where the street splits to Hwy. 5 and Hwy. 2. For those heading to Baja, make sure to turn to Hwy.5 --- it can get tricky here at times because this can be a busy intersection.

For those who have done this drive several times, and knows a more direct route to Hwy. 5, please share in the comment section.

Now go and have fun, and be safe driving to Baja.

The Earth is Open for adventure.

Mexicali East Crossing Northbound Explained (2023)

Mexicali East is a great crossing location for travel by car between the US and Mexico. However, it's confusing going northbound (as is common on the border.) This video shows how to get to the regular lane (the SENTRI and Ready Lanes are pretty easy to get to.) This is in early 2023, so it may change at any time!

Check border wait times here:

This is also known as Calexico East because Calexico is the city on the north side of the border and Mexicali is the city in Mexico.

Please let me know if you've had any trouble crossing the border - down in the comments below.
