Braga has the highest concentration of religious buildings in Portugal. At first, we thought they would be similar to other cities we've visited in Europe. We quickly learned that Braga's religious architecture was incredibly unique! Both the Cathedra of Braga and Bom Jesus du Monte had really unique elements that we haven't seen in other places in Europe (and trust us - we have visited a LOT of churches - they're nearly always free, so they're budget-friendly!). Bom Jesus du Monte has interesting history, too. Pilgrims used to go up to the chapel, climbing all the 577 stairs on their knees, as a tribute to the pain Jesus felt while being crucified. The sunset from on top of the hill was simply amazing.

John’s Portugal adventure kicks off at Pena Palace — that magical, rainbow-hued castle you’ve likely seen splashed across your Instagram feed. Apart from the Insta-worthy photo opportunities, there are plenty of good reasons to explore this jaw-dropping attraction: it’s located a short trip from Lisbon, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it offers stunning views overlooking the surrounding Sintra mountains.
Next up is a pit stop at Noah Surf House — a boutique hotel in Santa Cruz with epic amenities like a skate park, infinity pool, and ocean-view rooms. After getting his fill of sun, sand, and surf, it’s on to Óbidos for a deep-dive into Portuguese history. From its whitewashed houses to its picturesque cobbled streets and centuries-old castle, John shows us just how easy it is to explore the best of this medieval town on foot.
It’s no secret that Portugal offers fantastic weather year-round, so John heads to the beachside town of Nazaré to soak up some more of that famous Portuguese sunshine before spending a few days in the vibrant city of Porto. In Porto, John gets purposefully lost along the city’s insanely photogenic streets, takes to the waterways on a sightseeing river cruise, and enjoys a taste of the country’s infamous port wine.
If you want to see a side of Portugal that most visitors miss, you have to venture off the well-trodden tourist trail — and John does exactly that in underrated destinations like Braga, Guimarães, and Coimbra (three cities you should definitely add to your Portugal itinerary!). Last but certainly not least, John’s whirlwind trip ends in — you guessed it — the country’s ultra-cool, culture-packed capital of Lisbon!
