The Heaviest Corner on Earth is a promotional name given to the corner of 20th Street and 1st Avenue North in Birmingham, Alabama, United States, in the early 20th century.
In the early 1900s, four of the South's tallest buildings were constructed at 20th Street and First Avenue in downtown Birmingham. A magazine proclaimed it The Heaviest Corner on Earth. A marker at the site reads: At the turn of the 20th century, Birmingham was a small town of two and three story buildings with a few church steeples punctuating the skyline. During the industrial boom from 1902 to 1912 which made Birmingham the largest city in the state, four large buildings were constructed at the intersection of the city's main streets. The Woodward Building (now National Bank of Commerce), constructed in 1902 on the southwest corner, was the city's first steel-frame skyscraper. A good example of the Chicago school style of architecture, it brought a dramatic change to the vertical scale of the existing Victorian city. In 1906 the 16-story Brown Marx Building rose on the northeast corner; in 1908 an addition more than doubled its size. Long the South's largest office building, its principal tenant was United States Steel Corporation. The Empire Building (1909, northwest corner) and John A. Hand Building (1912, southeast corner) completed the 'Heaviest Corner.' Sheathed in marble, limestone, and terra cotta, they exemplify the more ornamental neoclassical style. Along the cornice of the Empire Building (now Colonial Bank), 'E's' stand for the Empire Improvement Company, which built the tower. At the time, the height and mass of the buildings was so impressive that the intersection of First Avenue North and 20th Street was proclaimed the heaviest corner on earth. Today these buildings represent the most significant group of early skyscrapers in the city.

Nature Trail and Sibyl Temple in Vestavia Hills, AL
We shot the first part of this video while hiking the nature trail behind Vestavia Hills Public Library. The second part was shot at the Sibyl Temple also in Vestavia Hills. This is not my usual hiking type video, but I hope you find it interesting anyway. We just wanted to check out some local places we had never been to. It was quite a trip to go out and basically play tourist in my own home and get to look at some local places with fresh eyes.

I cover why I think this is the best hotel in the city, based on quality, comfort, location, and price. I'll also show you a few restaurants that I recommend if you stay on Birmingham's North Side.
With the World Games 2022 coming to the Magic City this Summer, I'm trying to help first-time visitors get the most out of their Birmingham visit. On my channel you'll find reviews of what I believe are the best Hotels, Bars, Restaurants, Breweries, and Golf Courses that Birmingham, Alabama has to offer.
For this stay, I ate dinner at Cayo Coco Rum Bar, which is a must-do! (Reservations strongly recommended)
In the video, you'll see we had the Polynesian Pork Belly (5/5), the Greg Abram’s Pan Seared Black Grouper (4.5/5), and the Joyce Farm’s Jamaican Jerk Chicken (4/5). For Drinks, we had the Guri Guri and the Sunset Boulevard.
We finished with Desert at The Essential, where we had the Carrot Cake, an Espresso, and a Hi-Wire IPA. The Essential is also a great option for Dinner or Brunch. (Very busy for both)
For Brunch, we enjoyed at 10 minute walk to Roots and Revelry, where we had the stuffed french toast and the sweet potato hash. They also offer bottles of Champagne with your choice of juices for only $22. (Reservations recommended)

The Hotel is only about 15 minutes from the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport, so an Uber will be very inexpensive. It's also on the quiet side of downtown (North Side), where the more upscale bars and restaurants are. Despite what you may have heard about the city, downtown Birmingham is very safe. Most Crime takes place in the suburbs to the East and West of the city.

Small Treasures: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Their Contemporaries
The exhibition, organized by the North Carolina Museum of Art and sponsored by PNC, will be on view from January 30 - April 26, 2015, and will feature works by the greatest masters of the Dutch Flemish Golden Age.
Small Treasures brings together 40 small-scale oil paintings, most of which are not more than ten inches in height, by 28 artists of the 17th century. The exhibition will, for the first time, explore this little known field and show the extraordinary richness of this genre of work.
More than half of the works in the exhibition are drawn from private collections, some being on public view for the first time.
Untold Stories: the Foot Soldiers
Each Tuesday during February : 3,10.17.24. Visitors to the permanent gallery will have the opportunity to speak with and ask questions of a foot soldier from the Birmingham civil Rights Movement.
Downtown Trample Weekly Bike Ride
Each Thursday night the Redemptive Cycles' family goes riding. There's no set route, and we like to keep things casual. The ride typically covers around 10 miles and lasts about 2 hours - we ride at a relatively easy pace so don't worry if you're new to riding, and if you're intimidated by city traffic, group rides are an excellent way to ease your way in to urban cycling. We make a pit stop at the store to pick up drinks and snacks before heading to a cool spot to hangout for a bit. Meet us behind the shop at 6:00 pm, we ride out at 6:30. All are welcome! If you don't own a bike we have bikes available for rent; bring your friends!
