Luanda est la capitale de l'Angola, un pays du sud-ouest de l'Afrique. Fondée en 1576 par Paulo Dias de Novais et initialement colonisée par les Portugais, Luanda devint le centre administratif de la colonie portugaise d'Angola en 1627. C'était un important débouché pour le trafic d'esclaves vers le Brésil. Luanda et sa zone métropolitaine sont la capitale lusophone la plus peuplée du monde et la ville lusophone la plus peuplée en dehors du Brésil, avec plus de 8,3 millions d'habitants en 2020. Cela représente environ un tiers de la population angolaise.
Luanda a obtenu le statut de ville en 1605. Le portugais étant la langue officielle de l'Angola a été introduit à l'époque coloniale portugaise. L'anglais n'est pas largement parlé.
