Danbury, Essex, UK
SEE MY TRAVEL WEBPAGES:
Danbury is located close to Chelmsford in Essex. It is around 54km from the centre of London. Around 6,500 people live there, many of whom may well commute to the capital for work.
The village was built on the site of a hill fort - being some 112m above sea level and offering views all around so that the early settlers would get advance warning of danger. It was later settled by the Romans and then the Dæningas tribe of Saxons. In the Domesday book of 1086 it is called Danengeberiam which means stronghold of the family or followers of a man called Dene. Dene however was out of luck because alongside many other Saxons, his lands were expropriated and King William I gave them to one of his followers Geoffrey de Mandeville who became the Earl of Essex.
In this film we can see the church of St John the Baptist which dates from the 13th century. There are three wooden effigies in the church which are from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. One is of William St Clere whose family were landowners in the region.
In 1779 the tomb of a knight was discovered to be perfectly preserved in what was described as pickle.
Free parking is available for those arriving by vehicle, either off the village green or close to the church.

Windmills of Cambridgeshire: Burwell - Big Mill
This video documents one of two windmills at Burwell in Cambridgeshire. Me and my sister have had a lifelong interest in tall and interesting buildings such as windmills, and aim to go round many of the windmills in the region and other counties in England, so more videos will come in future months.
Big Mill in Burwell was built in the early 19th century and sits beside the Newmarket Road. This tower mill originally stood ten storeys high and is now a mere three storeys high with a thatched pyramidal roof. The mill was used to mill coprolite towards the end of it's working life and today is used for storage. No photos exist on the internet of the windmill prior to being shortened..

HMCS Ojibwa (tour visit) - Port Burwell, Ontario, Canada - Summer 2024
HMCS Ojibwa (tour visit July 20,2024) - Port Burwell, Ontario, Canada
HMCS Ojibwa is an Oberon-class submarine that served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and later the Canadian Forces Maritime Command (MARCOM). Originally intended for service with the British Royal Navy as HMS Onyx, the submarine was transferred to Canadian ownership before completion, and entered RCN service in 1965. Ojibwa operated primarily with Maritime Forces Atlantic until her decommissioning in 1998. In 2010, Ojibwa was laid up at CFB Halifax awaiting disposal, with the Elgin Military Museum planning to preserve her as a museum vessel. The submarine was towed to Port Burwell, Ontario in 2012, and was opened to the public in 2013. She is now the new focal point of a planned Museum of Naval History to be built alongside.(Wikipedia)

Coliseum Mountain and Mt. Burwell | Two Peaks in a Day | Epic Hikes near Vancouver
This video will show you the general trail conditions in mid-October, views, statistics, and some guide in hiking the trail. Hope you find this helpful in planning your hike. Thank you for watching and please subscribe for more of my hiking adventures.
*********************
Coliseum Mountain and Mount Burwell are located in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, North Vancouver, British Columbia. They offer 360° views of surrounding mountains and lakes: Cathedral Mountain, Mt. Bishop, Mt. Dickens, Runners' Peak, Palisade Lake, Burwell Lake, Seymour Lake, to name a few. Also at the col between Coliseum and Mt. Burwell is a beautiful tarn.
There are two standard routes to this hike: One is from the Seymour Valley and the other is from the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park. We did the latter.
Parking and Trailhead is at the Lynn Headwaters Regional Park Parking lot. This is a popular route and shares the same starting point with the hike to Norvan Falls.
Hike starts off at a fairly flat trail. At around ~7 km hike-in after the Norvan Falls / Coliseum junction, the trail steepens and has many exposed roots. The last kilometer to Coliseum Mountain is on a rugged rock field with views of East Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
The hike to Mount Burwell has some ups and downs and involves some route-finding and moderate scrambling.
This is a long hike, so early start is recommended.
Statistics:
To Coliseum Mountain:
Distance: 23.7 km round trip
Elevation Gain: 1,355 m.
Highest Point: 1,441 m.
Rating: Difficult
To Mount Burwell:
Distance: 30.7 km round trip
Elevation Gain: 1,471 m.
Highest Point: 1,541 m.
Rating: Difficult

Bruges City Tour - Best City In Europe - Travel & Discover
Bruges was a location of coastal settlement during prehistory. This Bronze Age and Iron Age settlement is unrelated to medieval city development. In the Bruges area, the first fortifications were built after Julius Caesar's conquest of the Menapii in the first century BC, to protect the coastal area against pirates. The Franks took over the whole region from the Gallo-Romans around the 4th century and administered it as the Pagus Flandrensis. The Viking incursions of the ninth century prompted Count Baldwin I of Flanders to reinforce the Roman fortifications; trade soon resumed with England and Scandinavia.

Places to see in ( Corfe Castle - UK )
Places to see in ( Corfe Castle - UK )
Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates back to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Corfe Castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.
In 1572, Corfe Castle left the Crown's control when Elizabeth I sold it to Sir Christopher Hatton. Sir John Bankes bought the castle in 1635, and was the owner during the English Civil War. His wife, Lady Mary Bankes, led the defence of the castle when it was twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. The first siege, in 1643, was unsuccessful, but by 1645 Corfe was one of the last remaining royalist strongholds in southern England and fell to a siege ending in an assault. In March that year Corfe Castle was demolished on Parliament's orders. Owned by the National Trust, the castle is open to the public and in 2010 received around 190,000 visitors. It is protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Corfe Castle was built on a steep hill in a gap in a long line of chalk hills, created by two streams eroding the rock on either side. The name Corfe derives from the Old English ceorfan, meaning 'a cutting', referring to the gap. The construction of the medieval castle means that little is known about previous activity on the hill. However, there are postholes belonging to a Saxon hall on the site. The hall may be where Edward the Martyr was assassinated in 978.
In the 1980s, Ralph Bankes bequeathed the entire Bankes estate to the National Trust, including Corfe Castle, much of the village of Corfe, the family home at Kingston Lacy, and substantial property and land holdings elsewhere in the area. In the summer 2006, the dangerous condition of the keep caused it to be closed to visitors, who could only visit the walls and inner bailey. The National Trust undertook an extensive conservation project on the castle, and the keep was re-opened to visitors in 2008, and the work completed the following year.
Corfe Castle is roughly triangular and divided into three parts, known as enclosures or wards. Enclosed in the 11th century, the inner ward contained the castle's keep, also known as a donjon or great tower, which was built partly on the enclosure's curtain wall. It is uncertain when the keep was built though dates of around 1100 to 1130 have been suggested, placing it within the reign of Henry I. Attached to the keep's west face is a forebuilding containing a stair through which the great tower was entered. On the south side is an extension with a guardroom and a chapel. The two attachments postdate the construction of the keep itself, but were built soon after. To the east of the keep within the inner ward is a building known as the Gloriette. Only ruins are left of the Gloriette which was probably built by King John.
( Corfe Castle - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Corfe Castle . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Corfe Castle - UK
