Journey Through Ethiopia - Africa Travel Documentary

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s most beautiful and fascinating countries, and a surprising travel destination. From spectacular mountain landscapes and national parks to vast lakes and mysterious deserts. From incredible wildlife to intriguing historic landmarks. From vibrant, fast growing cities to small villages and tribal regions, steeped in culture and traditions.

In this documentary style video, I will show you 10 beautiful places I visited, on a one-month journey through Ethiopia in 2019. I remember the smiles and welcoming attitude of the people, the incredible food, remarkable monuments, the stunning natural and urban landscapes. In all fairness, this was one of my best travels yet.

Sadly, however, at the time of editing this video, Ethiopia is in political and military conflict with the Northern Tigray region, which is causing great suffering to ordinary civilians. Like most people, I hope the relevant authorities can come to an agreement soon, and start rebuilding this beautiful land.

As a result of the conflict, some of the places in this video are currently inaccessible due to high security concerns. Always follow travel advice and consult local guides, to avoid putting yourself and others at risk.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start this journey in the small city of Lalibela, a deeply spiritual town popular with Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The awe-inspiring monolithic churches are the highlight here, but meeting the many pilgrims is equally, if not more, rewarding. After Lalibela, we venture to the mysterious Danakil Depression, one of the hottest and most inhospitable places on Earth. It’s a bizarre desert landscape, with salt lakes, volcanoes, sulfur springs, and acidic pools. It feels like true adventure travel, but can only be done with experienced tour companies and guides.

The rock-hewn churches of the Tigray region are something unique, and Abuna Yemata Guh may be the most special of them all. This place of worship can only be reached on a steep and sometimes terrifying hike, but rewards travelers with incredible views, and a serene and peaceful atmosphere. The site is managed by several clergymen and priests.

The spectacular Simien mountains offer some of Africa’s best chances for hikes and longer treks, and are also home to the gelada baboons, nicknamed as ‘bleeding heart monkeys’. They live in troops and can live high in the mountains.

After spending some time in the nature, we continue our journey in Gondar, a friendly city with stunning historic monuments. Perhaps even more impressive is Aksum, with some of Ethiopia’s most iconic historic and religious sites, such as the towering obelisks (or stelea), and the Church of Saint Mary of Zion (which, according to legend, is the hiding place of the Ark of the Covenant, in a small chapel).

Addis Ababa is often overlooked by travelers, who rush themselves to the North and South of the country. But the vibrant capital city is an interesting place to spend a couple of days, and serves as a good introduction to Ethiopian culture and food. There are some great areas to be visited, including the famous Mercato, the largest market in Africa.

After Addis, we travel to the South of Ethiopia, which feels very different in many ways. The first stop here is Arba Minch, known for its wonderful Nechisar national park. Here, you can take boat trips on one of Ethiopia’s largest lakes, and spot crocodiles, pelicans, hippos, baboons and other wildlife. The Dorze village is not far from here, and offers a peak into traditional village life. Its friendly inhabitants have created a sustainable form of tourism, and visitors can witness (and take part in) the local economy at work, with cotton weaving, pottery, coffee ceremonies, bread production, and much more.

We finish this journey in the Omo Valley, which is home to many different ethnicities and tribes. It’s important to travel with local guides here, as these destinations often risk turning into so called ‘human safaris’. While tourism can have a positive effect on people’s lives, it’s crucial that it happens in a respectful and meaningful way.

🇪🇸 Hot day at Barcelona beach

Until the end of the twentieth century, the beaches in Barcelona were not very appealing. It was only in the 90’s that the various beaches were transformed, cleaning the water and the sand to make them more attractive for locals and tourists to take a dip.
Although Barcelona is not considered to be a beach holiday destination, millions of people go to the city’s numerous beaches to sunbathe and swim in the Mediterranean Sea every year.
A promenade runs along all the city’s coastline and crosses every beach, from LLevant (northern side of the city) to Sant Sebastià (southern part of Barcelona), where the renowned Hotel W is.
All the beaches in Barcelona are well connected, maintained and equipped with all the services one would imagine a beach to have. The closest to the city center are La Barceloneta, Sant Miquel and Sant Sebastià.

I hope you enjoy my videos from these beautiful beaches.

Aside from being pointed by many historians as the cradle of humanity, the country is mostly known for its paradisiacal beaches, captivating cultures, incredible wildlife, and iconic sites such as Mount Kilimanjaro or the Ngorongoro Crater.

In times like the one we live in, it is only natural that travellers (especially women, who in more patriarchal cultures are forced to mind their behaviour) have the need to feel safe when visiting an unknown land. However, it is important to not let carefulness turn into distrust – so no matter where you go, keep your eyes and heart open and leave preconceived ideas behind.

Tanzania is a relatively new country, only becoming a sovereign state in 1964. The territory is currently divided into 26 regions, with Dodoma being the capital, Dar es Salaam the largest city and port, and the archipelago of Zanzibar as its most popular tourist destination. Despite being included on the popular “dangerous Africa” misconception, Tanzania is a safe place to explore even for women travellers, provided you take common sense for granted (much like everywhere else).

Thus, things like not walking around in random areas at night, avoid using unlicensed cabs, or keeping cash in different places, go without saying. Also, for the less experienced travelers who often feel diffident to get out of uncomfortable or dodgy situations, it is worth reaching out to local women for help or advice, since they are more likely to relate to whatever you may be going through.

Alternatively, you may want to stick to areas with at least a bit of tourism infra-structure (like Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Pemba Island, among others) and try to organise trips with fellow travellers you meet on the way. All that being said, locals are usually friendly and very generous, and as long as you are respectful they will go out of your way to make sure you are safe and well. Plus, an honest smile can also go a long way.

As some of the features that attract travellers from across the globe to Tanzania are:

Zanzibar’s beautiful beaches
curious Arabic influences,
the popular Stone Town – ancient part of the city and the islands’ former capital, known for its labyrinth of historic buildings
the Mafia Marine Park, which boast an impressive colony of coral reefs and is home to mighty creatures like the whale shark.

On the mainland, the country is famous for its high-altitude landscape, dotted with vast plains and plateaus that give life to an incredibly diverse fauna and flora, as well as dramatic scenery. Arusha is the gateway to some of the country’s best natural attractions. From here, you can go on a safari through the plains of the Serengeti National Park, which concentrates a great number of mammals living freely, including the famous “big five”; the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the largest boilers intact the world; as well as to climb points such as Mount Kilimanjaro – the culmination of Africa with its 5,895 meters of altitude and “eternal” snowy peaks – and Mount Meru.

In order to make the most out of your adventure, you can get a professional help from tour companies who can to organise everything from transport to accommodation so you can focus on taking it all in. With tons of experience and local knowledge, they offer trips across the country with packages to suit every palate: wildlife safari tours, camping safaris, cultural and historical tours, mountain climbing, among others.

Although Tanzania hosts various ethnic groups, languages (Swahili as the official language but English is widely spoken), and religions, the country is relatively conservative, making it important to bear some things in mind so to respect their customs and traditions, especially when it comes to clothing.

Hence, try not to walk around in bikinis and mini-skirts, as it may be seen as disrespectful (especially in areas along the coast, where people are predominantly Muslim), and when possible tuck your hair under a scarf. Another useful clothing-related tip is to bring (or buy) a couple of sarongs, so to protect the skin from the intense sun, keep your legs and waist covered, and not sweat with heavy shirts or trousers.
