Places to see in ( Buckie - UK )

Places to see in ( Buckie - UK )

Buckie is a burgh town on the Moray Firth coast of Scotland in Moray. Buckie was the largest town in Banffshire by some thousands of inhabitants before regionalisation in 1975 removed that political division from the map of Scotland.

The town is the third largest in the Moray Council area after Elgin and Forres and within the definitions of statistics published by the General Register Office for Scotland was ranked at number 75 in the list of population estimates for settlements in Scotland mid-year 2006. Buckie lies virtually equidistant to Banff to the east and Elgin to the west with both communities being approximately 17 miles (27 kilometres) distant whilst Keith lies 12 mi (19 km) to the south by road.

The origin of the name of the town has caused some debate and although the folk etymology is that Buckie is named after a seashell (genus buccinum) the reality is that the shared marine background is merely a coincidence. The name Buckie would originally have occurred in identifying a place that was not immediately adjacent to the sea so we must seek alternative etymological sources.

Geographically the town is, broadly speaking, laid out in a linear fashion, following the coastline. There is a lower shore area and an upper area. Fundamentally Buckie itself is the central part of the community lying between the Victoria Bridge under which flows the Buckie Burn at the western end of West Church Street, the eastern end of Cluny Harbour and above the shore area. To the west of Victoria Bridge and the Buckie Burn is Buckpool which was formerly known as Nether Buckie and on the shoreline, west of Cluny Harbour, between Baron Street and the Buckie Burn mouth, there is The Yardie. Immediately above The Yardie on the Buckie side of the burn is The Seatown. To the west of The Yardie is Harbourhead. To the east of Cluny Harbour lie Ianstown, Gordonsburgh and Portessie also known locally as The Sloch (historically The Rotten Slough) which reaches towards Strathlene. These communities were, to all intents and purposes, separate fishing settlements which gradually merged over the course of time. A new town was laid out above the shoreline in the 19th century and this is the rump of Buckie.

Buckie is situated near the A98 primary road which connects Fraserburgh with Fochabers at the junction of the A96. The A98 runs east-west, approximately parallel with the southern edge of Buckie. Historically, Buckie had extensive rail connections with the rest of North East Scotland. The Great North of Scotland Railway.

( Buckie - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Buckie . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Buckie - UK

With the world the way it is at the moment, and like a lot of our fellow Brit's we had no choice but to take a staycation for our summer holiday this year. We took a chance on a last-minute break to Aberdeenshire in Scotland and wow! we were so surprised at how amazing and beautiful it is!

Check out the relaxing video where we travel to 10 coastal areas in 10 minutes, let us know if you have visited any of the locations and your thoughts in the comments below ☺

John O'Groats (Travel Guide) Discover Scotland's First and Last Community #visitscotland #nc500

At the far north eastern tip of the British mainland you'll find John O'Groats, the community that embraces End to Enders setting off for distant Lands End or arriving exhausted after the challenge of a lifetime. Named after the Dutch ferryman Jan de Groot, this tiny settlement boasts stunning views to Orkney and Stroma as well as vertiginous seabird laden cliffs at Duncansby Head and the unforgettable Stacks of Duncansby.
In this film you will learn about the JoG Development Trust's initiatives from Andrew Mowat (proprietor of the Seaview Hotel) in addition to the history of the First and Last Shop as told by Walter Mowat. You will also meet Teresa and Rebecca Wymer, the proud owners of Stacks, the best Deli and Coffee House in the far north.
John O'Groats is also an essential stop on any NC500 journey as well as a great base to explore the unique county of Caithness. Relax and unwind to the rhythms of the Pentland Firth.

Buckie House Corner On History Visit To Anstruther East Neuk Of Fife Scotland

Tour Scotland short 4K Spring travel video clip of vehicles driving round Buckie House corner on ancestry, genealogy, family history visitand trip to Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Britain, United Kingdom, This house has been on its corner site in my hometown since 1692. In the 1840s, a local slater and plasterer called Alex Bachelor lived in the house and he covered the front of it with a wealth of shells. Shells are often called Buckies in Scotland. The surname Baxter was first found in Forfarshire part of the Tayside region of North Eastern Scotland, and present day Council Area of Angus, where they held a family seat from ancient times. Spelling variations of Baxter include Baxter, Bakster, Baxster, Baxstair, Baxstare and others. Gregory Baxter landed in Massachusetts, America, in 1630; John Baxter landed in Maryland in 1633; Robert Baxter, aged 21, landed in Virginia in 1635; Jane Baxter landed in Virginia in 1636, William Baxter landed in Virginia in 1636. Kennedy Baxter arrived in Canada in 1820; William Baxter, aged 28, landed in Quebec in 1833; Mary Baxter, aged 18, arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick aboard the ship Protector in 1834. The date for astronomical spring is Sunday 20th March, ending on Tuesday 21st June, while by the meteorological calendar, spring will start on Tuesday 1st March. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. When driving on Scottish roads in Scotland slow down and enjoy the trip

Places to see in ( Dufftown - UK )

Places to see in ( Dufftown - UK )

Dufftown is a burgh in Moray, Scotland. Dufftown is in the ancient parish of Mortlach. The old Kirkton of Mortlach, with its historic church, is on the southern outskirts of the present town. In the 19th century, James Duff, 4th Earl Fife, established Dufftown as housing for soldiers returning home from the Napoleonic War.

Dufftown hosts a highland games event every July which attracts many tourists. Dufftown's notable buildings include Balvenie Castle, which was partly built with stones from the ruins of nearby Auchindoun Castle. The street plan of Dufftown is mainly four main roads meeting at the Dufftown Clock Tower; previously a prison but now a tourist information centre.

The Diocese of Mortlach was one of Scotland's 13 medieval bishoprics. The names of four bishops of the see are known:
Beóán of Mortlach (fl. 1012)
Donercius
Cormauch
Nechtan, who transferred the see to Aberdeen in April 1132, during the reign of King David I of Scotland.

Today, the Diocese of Mortlach, under its Latin name of Murthlacum, is a titular see of the Catholic Church. Dufftown has an oceanic climate typical of Northern Scotland, characterised by relatively mild, damp winters and cool cloudy summers. The area averages 76 air frosts a year. Like much of Europe, Dufftown's climate is insulated somewhat by the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current originating near the gulf of Mexico. This warm ocean current makes Dufftown's climate significantly milder during the winter than expected for its latitude.

Portknockie to Cullen - Circular Walk

Take a gamble on this for this is excellent coastal walking. Exploring the pretty Portknockie and its harbour area is fun but most come here to see the stunning Bow Fiddle rock which doesn’t disappoint. Extending your walk to visit Cullen rewards you with cliff top views, caves, springs, sandy beaches and fishing cottages. All before you reach the busy little town of Cullen. The town has bars and cafes and Cullen Skink is the local delicacy which has to be tried. It was fantastic too. The return walk follows the disused railway line and allows a visit to the castle mound too.

June 14 Scotland: from Portknockie to Buckie harbour

On the way to Buckie to do the shopping. Nice weather, how it should be. It is not all in this episode, but the gorse is all over the place and yellow/orange like there is no tomorrow. Huge amounts of it...
