Ammanford is a town and community in the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales, with a population 5,293 according to the Office for National Statistics, increasing to 5,411 at the 2011 census. Located at the end of the Amman Valley, Ammanford is a former coal mining town and serves as the main shopping centre for many villages in the surrounding area.
Ammanford is served by the A483 and A474 roads and Ammanford local railway station is a stop on the Heart of Wales Line with trains to Llanelli and Swansea to the south and Shrewsbury to the north. Ammanford is twinned with Breuillet, Essonne.
Ammanford took its current name on 20 November 1880. The community that existed then and now known as Ammanford dates back to around the early 19th century. At that time the main highways went through the area, not to it. The north-south road from Llandeilo and Llandybïe went to Betws, and the east-west road from the Amman Valley went to Penybanc and Tycroes, and further afield, both converging at a crossroads (now Ammanford Square). This in turn led to the development of coaching inns or staging inns and taverns catering for the needs of the traveller. The area eventually became identified by the name of one of these hostelries — Cross Inn.
Ammanford was part of Carmarthenshire County Council from 1889 until 1974 and was usually represented by Labour councillors. It became part of Dyfed County Council from 1974 until 1996. Following the abolition of Dyfed it became, once again, part of Carmarthenshire, now a unitary authority.
Ammanford Urban District Council was formed in 1903 in consequence of sharp population growth. It was abosrbed into Dinefwr Borough Council upon re-organization in 1974. Dinefwr in turn was absorbed into the Carmarthenshire unitary authority in 1996. Ammanford's Town Council has continued as a community council. The community is bordered by the communities of: Llandybie; Betws; and Llanedi, all being in Carmarthenshire.
The Ammanford Anthracite Strike was a riot at Ammanford in 1925 during a strike by anthracite miners who took control of the town by force and violence for 10 days. 200 Glamorgan police were ambushed by strikers at Pontamman Bridge during the so-called 'Battle of Ammanford'. A number of signicant nonconformist chapels were established at Ammanford. Ammanford hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1922 and 1970.

The TOP GEAR Road - Driving The Black Mountain Pass In Wales
The A4069, the Black Mountain pass over the western side of the Brecon Beacons is also known as the Top Gear road after being featured on a drive in 2011.
Driving In Wales - This section of the A4069 stretches from Brynamman over the Black Mountain Pass to Llangadog. The road over the Brecon Beacons rises to 1600 feet before descending back down the valley to the other side.
From April 2023 the Brecon Beacons are now called Bannau Brycheiniog
As well as an excellent driving road, one of the best drives in Wales. It is an excellent place for hiking or to enjoy the rugged views of South Wales.
Just be careful of the speed cameras and the maximum speed in the area is only 40 mph.

Ancient woodland trees and forests. Wye Valley (AONB) UK - British trees and woodlands documentary.
British trees and woodlands documentary. Ancient woodland trees and forests. The ancient woodland and the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB; Welsh: Dyffryn Gwy) is an internationally important protected landscape straddling the border between England and Wales. It is one of the most dramatic and scenic landscape areas in southern Britain.
The River Wye (Welsh: Afon Gwy) is the fifth-longest river in the United Kingdom. The upper part of the river passes through the settlements of Rhayader, Builth Wells and Hay-on-Wye, but the area designated as an AONB covers 326 square kilometres (126 sq mi) surrounding a 72-kilometre (45 mi) stretch lower down the river, from just south of the city of Hereford to Chepstow.
British trees and woodlands.
In the UK, an ancient woodland is a woodland that has existed continuously since 1600 or before in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (or 1750 in Scotland). Before those dates, planting of new woodland was uncommon, so a wood present in 1600 was likely to have developed naturally. The analogous American term is old-growth forest.
In most ancient woods, the trees and shrubs have been cut down periodically as part of the management cycle. Provided that the area has remained as woodland, the stand is still considered ancient. Since it may have been cut over many times in the past, ancient woodland does not necessarily contain very old trees.
For many species of animal and plant, ancient woodland sites provide the sole habitat, and for many others, conditions on these sites are much more suitable than those on other sites. Ancient woodland in the UK, like rainforest in the tropics, is home to rare and threatened species. For these reasons ancient woodland is often described as an irreplaceable resource, or 'critical natural capital'.
Ancient woodland is formally defined on maps by Natural England and equivalent bodies. Mapping of ancient woodland has been undertaken in different ways and at different times, and the quality and availability of data varies from region to region, although there are some efforts to standardise and update it.

I am riding four passes in one day on my way to Scotland. Why not? I have to get out of my way to do this, but I have plenty of time as I set off a day earlier. I plan to stop just after crossing into Scotland and enjoy a beautiful evening camping.
Look like I have the Autumn Weather on my side, so join me on my trip through the Lakes.
