Amtrak map USA: Understand America's train routes

Amtrak Track a Train tool:

So where exactly do Amtrak trains go in the United States? This video is an in-depth look at where Amtrak can take you, and how you can use Amtrak and its connecting services to get around America.

To get around America and travel between the cities on this map, sometimes it’s a single ride on one train and sometimes it isn’t. Most importantly, there’s no coast-to-coast service. So if you want to travel from, say, New York to Los Angeles, you’ll have to transfer. Most transfers between the east and the west part of the country are done in Chicago, which is a major Amtrak hub. You can also transfer in New Orleans.

The best way to figure out exactly how to get from place to place on Amtrak is to let them decide. When you buy tickets on the Amtrak website, you just put in your starting and ending points and it will give you whatever options there are. Often there aren’t really as many options as you’d think, assuming you want as few transfers as possible. For example, despite all the Amtrak lines in the northeast, there’s only one direct route between Boston and Chicago, and only two between New York and Chicago.

Speaking of the northeast, this is arguably the best-served area of the United States. Compared to other parts of the country, quite a few shorter and more specialized routes exist here. So you can take the Keystone Service between New York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; or the Pennsylvanian between New York and Pittsburgh. The Downeaster goes between Boston and Brunswick, Maine. From New York, the Adirondack and Maple Leaf take you to Montreal and Toronto, respectively. So, if you’re traveling around the northeast on Amtrak, you’re fairly well covered.

What if you want to go from Washington DC to Denver? In this case you’ll need two trains, either the Cardinal or the Capitol Limited to Chicago, and then the California Zephyr to Denver.

Now, while there are a lot of major and some not-so-major cities on this map, and thus ways to travel between them on Amtrak, there are obviously some gaps. We already saw how Amtrak doesn’t even enter Wyoming or South Dakota at all, and other states like New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Delaware just barely. And what about major destinations Amtrak *does* go, like Atlanta? Only one route passes through Atlanta, the Crescent. That means there’s no easy way to get between Atlanta and… Chicago, or Florida, or Nashville. New Orleans and Washington DC, those are pretty much your only options from Atlanta. In fact Amtrak doesn’t go anywhere near Nashville. Nor does it go to Phoenix, or Las Vegas, or Boise or Twin Falls, or Augusta Maine. And on and on.

The good news is that Amtrak partners with various transportation services, usually buses, around the country to provide access to many more destinations. This map, which is on the Amtrak website, shows these connecting routes in green. Amtrak calls them Thruway services. This is how you can fill in a lot of the gaps in Amtrak’s main train routes, and get to Las Vegas, or to Phoenix, or Montgomery Alabama, or Sarasota, or Nashville, or way up through Wisconsin and Michigan. This is how you explore more of Oregon and Colorado, and Kentucky and Ohio… and yes, how you can use Amtrak to move around the great state of Wyoming.

See you on the rails!

From Wikipedia:
Brooksville is a city in and the county seat of Hernando County, Florida, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 7,719, up from 7,264 at the 2000 census. Brooksville is home to historic buildings and residences, including the homes of former Florida Governor William Sherman Jennings and football player Jerome Brown. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Brooksville, established in 1856 by the merger of the towns of Melendez and Pierceville, took its name to honor and show support for Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery congressman from South Carolina who caned and seriously injured Massachusetts Senator and abolitionist Charles Sumner.

We Ate Where Elvis Ate | Coney Island Drive-Inn in Brooksville, Florida | World Famous Hot Dogs

In today's video, we are in Brooksville, FL and eating at a pretty unique place called Coney Island Drive-inn. Now, according to their website, while Elvis was filming a movie in Citrus County called Follow That Dream, he stopped by this little hot dog place in Brooksville and ate there! They are known for their world famous hot dogs that they have been serving for over 40 years. They have a ton of options you can choose from as well as creating your own with whatever toppings you want. They have seating inside and outside and you can also order your food inside or outside. Inside, they have a lot of antique looking items as well as a ton of license plates. They have a wall that shows some of the food records people hold, and in the back room they have a statue of Elvis and they also have his movie playing on a TV. As far as the food, the hot dogs are amazing and they let you choose a smaller one or a footlong. It is nice to sample a few by getting some smaller ones but if you are really hungry, then the footlong is the way to go! We also ended up getting some of their fries which were good and crunchy! And, we finished it off with getting a couple of milkshakes which were also good! Overall, this is a unique place to try and it doesn't cost much money but it allows you to eat some world famous hot dogs as well as eat where Elvis ate! Thanks so much for watching! God Bless!!!

A Brief Look into Dames Cave Near Brooksville, Florida

When I learned there are caves near Brooksville, Fla., I added them to my must-visit list.

Last year, I attended an event in Citrus County and set out to find Dames Cave in Withlacoochee State Forest, about a 30-minute drive from Brooksville. There are other caves in the Withlacoochee State Forest but I only had an hour to explore so Dames Cave it was. The roundtrip hike from the parking area at the Trail 22 Trailhead on County Road 491 (S. Lecanto Hwy.), it's about 1.2 miles.

Hiking and venturing solo into caves is risky. I wore sturdy hiking boots (caves are slippery), iPhone (to use in an emergency) and headlamp in my backpack in case I ventured into a tunnel (which I did not). This is one of those times when I advise if you can hike with someone, do it!

As you'll see, Dames Cave is highly vandalized with colorful spray paint, which explains the alternative name of Vandal Cave. DO NOT add to the graffiti

Here's the address:
Trail 22
10701 S Lecanto Hwy.
Lecanto, FL 34461

Exploring The Brooksville Ridge (Part One)

The Brooksville ridge is a geological feature in west central Florida that took millions of years to form. These places include karst, limestone, rock outcroppings and sinkhole formations along with caves throughout the areas. It is a very interesting place to explore in this part of the state with many hiking trails and recreational opportunities. In this area I roam around parts of the Withlacoochee State Forest located in Citrus County, Florida not that far from the the town of Brooksville. In the past many of these areas were used for mining actives such as limestone and phosphate. If you would like to explore some of these areas check out the Citrus Tract in Withlacoochee State Forest.
