10 Amazing Places in Sweden, Stockholm City Tour

Stockholm , Sweden Walking travel tour : Old Town.

Gamla stan (The Old Town), until 1980 officially Staden mellan broarna (The Town between the Bridges), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla stan consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen. The surrounding islets Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg are officially part of, but not colloquially included in, Gamla stan. The word stan is simply a contraction of the word staden (sta'n), meaning the town. The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.

Our Stockholm travel guide! Stockholm is one of those cities that I visited and returned just a few weeks later to make an episode. There is so much to love about Stockholm - not only is it beautiful, spread across dozens of islands, but the food is incredible and the vibe outstanding. Stockholm is a rare city that is truly an all year round destination. Cosy and characterful in the winter, stunning and sunny in the summer. I have a lot of time for Stockholm and I think you will too.

Stockholm, Sweden

• My trip to Stockholm, all videos & photos taken by me

Stockholm is the capital of Sweden and the most populous city in the Nordic region, with 911 989 people living in the municipality, approximately 1.4 million in the urban area, and a total population close to 2.2 million in the metropolitan area. The city is spread across 14 islands on the coast in the southeast of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Mälaren, by the Stockholm archipelago and the Baltic sea. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Birger Jarl.

Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden. The region alone accounts for over a third of the country's GDP, and is among the top 10 regions in Europe by GDP per capita. It's an important global city, and the main centre for corporate headquarters in the Nordic region. The city is home to some of Europe's top ranking universities, such as the Karolinska Institute, and hosts the annual Nobel Prize ceremonies and banquet at the Stockholm Concert Hall and Stockholm City Hall. One of the city's most prized museums, the Vasa Museum, is the most visited non-art museum in Scandinavia. The Stockholm metro, opened in 1950, is well known for its decoration of the stations; it has been called the longest art gallery in the world. Sweden's national football arena is located north of the city centre, in Solna. Ericsson Globe, the national indoor arena, is in the southern part of the city. The city was the host of the 1912 Summer Olympics, and hosted the equestrian portion of the 1956 Summer Olympics otherwise held in Melbourne, Australia.

Stockholm is the seat of the Government of Sweden and most government agencies, including the highest courts in the Judiciary, and the official residencies of the Swedish monarch and the Prime Minister. The Government has its seat in the Rosenbad building, the Riksdag is seated in the Parliament House, and the Prime Minister's residence is adjacent at the Sager House. The Stockholm Palace is the official residence and principal workplace of the Swedish monarch, while the Drottningholm Palace, a World Heritage Site on the outskirts of Stockholm, serves as the Royal Family's private residence

Date of Travel: JANUARY 2018
Airline: BRA Braathens Regional
Flight #: TF11
Aircraft: Avro RJ100
Livery: BRA Standard pastel rainbow
Route: GOT-BMA
Tail number: SE-DSV
Miles: 235
Airborne time: 0h56m
Notes: Aircraft swap from RJ85
Cost to book: Around £100, including bags and flexibility - one way.

Thanks for finding my video and pressing play!

I was in Gothenburg in 2016 and noticed a strange-looking airline with odd “rainbow” style tail fins. I found out they were BRA Braathens Regional Airlines, a small domestic carrier operating mostly within Sweden from their hub at Bromma.

So, naturally, I had to try them. At around £100 one way this was by no means a cheap flight. These Gothenburg to Stockholm shuttles are meant for the business traveller and priced accordingly. The flight was full of people off to do a day’s business in Sweden’s capital.

However, even given the price, I was still impressed by their service standard. This is an airline that knows who its customers are and the product is sensible and thoughtful. There’s even a breakfast served on the flight, a coffee and drinks service, a hot towel and a second drinks run. Very impressive on a flight of under an hour.

Of course, the real highlight for me was an opportunity to fly one of these old RJ aircraft again. I can remember when they were the staple of BA Cityflyer flights from London City back when I was starting my flying addiction. They’re a fun aircraft to fly. A bit cramped, but their uniqueness ensures charm overrides pragmatism for me.
