Places to see in ( Blandford Forum - UK )
Places to see in ( Blandford Forum - UK )
Blandford Forum, commonly Blandford, is a market town in the North Dorset district of Dorset, England, sited by the River Stour about 24 km northwest of Poole. It is the administrative headquarters of North Dorset District Council.
Blandford is notable for its Georgian architecture, the result of rebuilding after the majority of the town was destroyed by a fire in 1731. The rebuilding work was assisted by an Act of Parliament and a donation by George II, and the rebuilt town centre—to designs by local architects John and William Bastard—has survived to the present day largely intact.
Blandford Camp, a military base, is sited on the hills two miles to the north east of the town. It is the base of the Royal Corps of Signals, the communications wing of the British Army, and the site of the Royal Signals Museum.
Blandford is situated between Cranborne Chase and the Dorset Downs, to the south east of the Blackmore Vale, 24 km (15 mi) northwest of Poole and 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Salisbury. It is sited in the valley of the River Stour, mostly on rising ground northeast of the river, but with some development south of the river at Blandford St Mary.
ost of the buildings in Blandford's centre are Georgian, due to the rebuilding after the 1731 fire and the absence of subsequent change. Pevsner stated that hardly any other town in England can be compared with it. A 1970 report by Donald Insall Associates described Blandford as the most complete and cohesive surviving example of a Georgian country town in England, with the Market Place area in particular given the status of An Area of National Importance and described as a brilliant master piece . Buildings that have received Grade I listing by English Heritage are the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, the town hall and corn exchange, The Old House, Coupar House, Pump House, and several buildings in Market Place: numbers 18, 20 and 26, and the old Greyhound Inn. All the listed structures in Market Place, including the church and another seventeen buildings with either Grade II or Grade II* status, form a group, together with several listed properties in West Street and East Street.
Coupar House, dated around 1750, is the largest private house in Blandford that dates from the post-fire period. It has a richly decorated interior with a notable staircase, and is unique among the town's private dwellings for having Portland stone dressings to its brick façade, though the design of this frontage has been described as curiously amateurish with little attention ... paid to rules of proportion.
Blandford lies at the junction of the A350 and A354 main roads but is skirted by an eastern bypass. The main road running through the town is the B3082, connecting Blandford Forum to Wimborne Minster. Buses run from the town to locations including Poole, Bournemouth, Salisbury and Shaftesbury with the primary operator being Wilts & Dorset. Blandford is 15 miles (24 km) from Bournemouth Airport.
Blandford is 15 miles (24 km) from Poole railway station. From 1860 to 1964, Blandford Forum was a stop on the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway, which ran from Bath to Bournemouth, until the line closed to passengers in 1966. Located between Templecombe and Broadstone, the railway was still open until the closure of the Blandford's goods yard in 1969, after which the track was lifted. The station was immortalised in 1964 in the song Slow Train by Flanders and Swann.
( Blandford Forum - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Blandford Forum . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Blandford Forum - UK

Gypsy Travellers Suffer Prejudice From Local Snobs - 600 Year Old Stow Horse Fair
Romany travellers and Gypsies horse trading.
The Stow Horse Fair, held in the picturesque town of Stow-on-the-Wold in Gloucestershire, England, is a biannual event steeped in history and tradition. Dating back over 500 years, this fair is one of the oldest of its kind in the country, originally established to cater to the local agricultural community. It takes place every May and October, attracting traders, Irish Travellers, Gypsies, horse enthusiasts, and curious visitors from far and wide.
The fair's primary focus is on the buying and selling of horses, particularly cobs and other traditional breeds. The atmosphere is vibrant and bustling, with rows of horses tethered along the streets and in fields, awaiting inspection by potential buyers. Beyond the horse trading, the fair also features a variety of stalls selling tack, equestrian equipment, and other rural wares. There are often additional attractions such as fairground rides, food stalls, and demonstrations, adding to the lively, festive ambiance.
A unique aspect of the Stow Horse Fair is its cultural significance to the Romani community, who have been integral participants since the fair's inception. For many, it is not just a market but a social gathering, a place to meet family and friends, and to celebrate their rich heritage. The fair encapsulates a blend of commercial activity and deep-rooted cultural traditions, making it a distinctive and enduring event in the British countryside calendar.
Gypsies and Traveler communities in the UK are diverse groups with rich cultural heritages, comprising Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers, Scottish Travellers, and other groups. These communities have distinct histories and traditions, often characterized by a nomadic lifestyle, though many now live in permanent or semi-permanent sites.
Romany Gypsies, originally from northern India, have been in the UK since the 16th century. They have a unique language, Romani, and a culture that includes strong family ties, traditional music, and crafts. Irish Travellers, another significant group, have their own language called Shelta and traditions linked to their Irish heritage. Scottish Travellers, also known as Nachins, have a long history in Scotland, with a culture rich in storytelling and music.
Despite their vibrant cultures, these communities often face significant challenges, including discrimination, difficulties accessing education, healthcare, and adequate housing. Legal issues surrounding land rights and the availability of authorized sites for caravans are ongoing concerns. Many Gypsies and Travellers feel their way of life is misunderstood or marginalized by wider society.
Efforts to promote understanding and integration are growing, with advocacy groups working to preserve their rights and cultural heritage. Celebrations like Appleby Horse Fair and Stow Horse Fair are crucial cultural events that highlight their traditions and foster a sense of community. These fairs are not only important for social cohesion within the communities but also serve as a bridge for greater awareness and appreciation from the broader public.

Ep2 Flying The Somerset & Dorset Trailway - Broadstone to Sturminster Marshall, Dorset, UK By Drone
2021 Then and now story of 'The Somerset & Dorset' Trailway starting from The Castleman's Corkscrew at Broadstone to Sturminster Marshall.
Our drone follows the original route revealing ghosts from the past along the way.
We have found that there is much less archive material available for the Dorset end of this railway. Perhaps this is because the notable photographers of the day were based more towards Bath than Bournemouth!
Other than becoming a linked up trailway, the drone also shows all the locations along the line where the route has become severed by development. There are optimists out there that believe the railway could be reconstructed in it's entirety.
However, there would now need to be so much compulsory purchase, that we can't see this becoming viable in any of our lifetimes. What do you think?
HS2 is happening only because London has become so rammed with commerce, we need satellite model London's connected together. Although after COVID and home working, you have to question the whole ethos of commuting going forward, which doesn't bode well for the railways that do remain.
Featuring locations at Broadstone golf course, Ashington, Corfe Mullen Halt, Corfe Mullen Junction, Bailey Gate Crossing, Sturminster Marshall.
This video is a bit of an experiment to see if there's any interest in flying along old disused railway lines using a drone. Your comments below are welcome, and give us a like if you want us to make more of these!
Thanks,
Rail Flicks.

London walk: Marylebone & Oxford Street - Portman Square, James Street, St Christopher's narrated 4K
A mooch around Marylebone on a warm August afternoon in London yields so many surprises. A few seconds from Oxford Street lie Marylebone and the Portman Estate, full of history, eateries and boutique shops. In the heart of Marylebone, Chiltern Street and New Quebec Street provide special places to hang out or browse independent retailers. Portman Square has a history that includes Churchill's F Section while Manchester Square is the famous location for the album cover of the Beatles' Please Please Me AND in the history of the building homing the Wallace Collection there is a scandalous past involving a former Prince Regent. Before returning to Oxford Street, there are the cosy eateries of James Street and St Christopher's Shopping Centre.

🏴 Go Ape in the Forest of Dean Adventure 005
Three nights at the Bracelands CCC Site with a visit to Go Ape and a walk along the river Wye
Site Review:
This site has a beautiful location in the Forest of Dean, a true get away into nature. The toilet facilities were slightly more dated than the CCC sites we have visited recently but were ok.
Things to Do:
1. Walk down to the river Wye: It is a fair walk down to the river Wye, (about 2 miles) and obviously up hill on the way back! The walk down is lovely and even more so when you reach the river.
1a.Turn right without crossing the river to walk to Symonds Yat where there is a nice pub on the river for lunch.
1b.Turn right and cross the famous footbridge as shown in this video. Across the bridge on the left there is a tea room serving good coffee. Keep walking on this side of the river (the other side this way isn't as interesting) Go up to King Arthurs Cave. The route can be found here:
2. GoApe: There was no public transport so we rode our bikes there, the route we took back was about 10 miles and quite hard when combined with 2 hours of GoApe. I wouldn't attempt to ride there with children under around 13 -14 years old. The ride is good with a lot of mountain bike off road. The ride through the quarry is mostly granny gear so be warned! Here is the route we took back:
We took the old train line from Coleford on the way there but I went wrong too much to post the route I recorded! This is also a good way to head there.
3. Segway: do this GoApe.
Hope you like the video and appreciate the info, please subscribe and like if you do! :)
