Zagreb Travel Guide - Croatia Memorable Adventure

Zagreb Travel Guide - Croatia Memorable Adventure

Zagreb is a city in Central Croatia and the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is a vibrant city of more than 800K people (metropolitan area: more than 1.1 million). The city boasts a charming medieval 'old city' look with architecture and cobbled streets reminiscent of Vienna, Budapest, Prague and other Central European cities. In 2018 it was visited by about 1.2 million tourists, mainly from South Korea, United States, Germany, China and Italy. Enjoy the free WiFi available at the main square and around the national theatre.

The imposing mountain overlooking Zagreb (Medvednica) contains a preserved fortress (Medvedgrad) and fascinating views of the city. Being respectful in the fort is a good idea, since it is the site of the Altar of the Homeland memorial, dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Homeland war. There are several historical festivals during the year, including knights tournaments.

Zagreb is split into seventeen administrative divisions called city districts:

Donji grad(Lower town)
Gornji Grad–Medveščak(Upper town–Medveščak)
Trnje
Maksimir
Peščenica – Žitnjak
Novi Zagreb – istok (New Zagreb–East)
Novi Zagreb – zapad (New Zagreb–West)
Trešnjevka – sjever (Trešnjevka–North)
Trešnjevka – jug (Trešnjevka–South)
Črnomerec
Gornja Dubrava (Upper Dubrava)
Donja Dubrava (Lower Dubrava)
Stenjevec
Podsused – Vrapče
Podsljeme
Sesvete
Brezovica

The historical part of the city to the north of Ban Jelačić Square is composed of the Gornji Grad and Kaptol, a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and government buildings that are popular with tourists on sightseeing tours. The historic district can be reached on foot, starting from Jelačić Square, the centre of Zagreb, or by a funicular on nearby Tomićeva Street. Each Saturday, (from April till the end of September), on St. Mark's Square in the Upper town, tourists can meet members of the Order of The Silver Dragon (Red Srebrnog Zmaja), who reenact famous historical conflicts between Gradec and Kaptol. It's a great opportunity for all visitors to take photographs of authentic and fully functional historical replicas of medieval armour.

Zagreb's numerous museums reflect the history, art and culture not only of Zagreb and Croatia, but also of Europe and the world.

The Archaeological Museum
Modern Gallery (Croatian: Moderna galerija)
Croatian Natural History Museum (1 Demetrova Street)
Technical Museum (18 Savska Street)
Museum of the City of Zagreb (20 Opatička Street)
Arts and Crafts Museum (10 Republic of Croatia Square)
Ethnographic Museum
Mimara Museum
Croatian Museum of Naïve Art

Bistra is a small settlement in the Municipality of Vrhnika in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia. It is best known for Bistra Charterhouse, a large monastic complex that from 1260 housed the first charterhouse in Carniola. It was disbanded in 1782 upon a decree by the Emperor Joseph II. Since 1951, it houses the Technical Museum of Slovenia. Throughout your expedition of Croatia, you’ll uncover the great, the grand and the gorgeous, but for now we’ll leave you with some of the most interesting of the monuments you’ll be able to see.

From the ancient hub and culturally significant Split, Diocletian’s Palace is hard to miss. You’ll inadvertently wander your way through the palaces’ alleys and streets before realising. Walk back in time through this 4th Century AD walls and discover the thriving centre of Split.

Famously known as the Pearl of the Adriatic, Dubrovnik’s iconic walls are one of the best preserved fortification systems of the Middle Ages. With 6 fortress to discover, enjoy panoramic views as you stroll the walls that encircle the city.

Fortica Omiš is a 15th Century Venetian structure perched high on a hilltop overlooking Omiš town below. A town once run by Almissa pirates, aortic is now an unmissable stop to see.

Find yourself absorbed by the best preserved Romanesque-Gothic complexion all of Central Europe. Trogir’s Roman Town was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.

For a relatively small country, Croatia has many monuments listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO including Sibenik’s grand St. James Cathedral that hicks you away with its intricate details and huge design. It’s no wonder that this is the most significant architecture in Croatia!

Finally, monuments don’t get much more significant than Zadar’s Roman Forum which is the mot accurate example of an ancient city given its layout. Peruse through the largest forum in Croatia which was commissioned by Roman emperor Augustus.

Ghost Towns & Ski Villages | Life in the SHARR MOUNTAINS of KOSOVO

Visiting an abandoned town partially destroyed in the Kosovo War as well as Kosovo’s premium Ski Resort Brezovica in the Sharr Mountain National Park.
🇽🇰 See all of my Road Trip in Kosovo here →

The second half of my day exploring the Sharr Mountains in Kosovo. My first stop was an impromptu one after I saw some partially destroyed buildings on the roadside, when I looked around I saw more and so decided to investigate. Turns out I had stumbled upon a collection of buildings damaged in fighting during the Kosovo War - these buildings now made the whole area look like a ghost town.

I entered what looked like an old checkpoint, bullet holes could be seen in the walls and the whole structure was now nothing more than a shell. Across the street were some more damaged buildings and I couldn’t resist heading inside to take a look around. The whole place was trashed and overgrown, it looked like it had been derelict for a couple of decades.

I then drove through the Sharr Mountains and up towards the premium Ski Resort of Brezovica. As it was the summer the whole village was closed down and no doubt getting ready for winter. I took a look at the ski lifts, the hotel, a few hotels and restaurants, and from the end of the road I admired the spectacular cloud covered mountains all around.

My final adventure for the day was to make it back to Pristina Airport, drop off the rental car and head into the city, and it was also going to plan until I took an unscheduled food stop on the way, after that things took an unexpected but dramatic turn.
