S1 – Ep 358 – Brandfort – We Found Evidence of the Pioneers of Van Life!
Our visit to Brandfort was an intriguing and diverse experience. Upon arriving in the town, we were greeted by a vibrant community engaged in playing tennis on the courts and children playing on the rugby fields. The town's history came to life as we encountered the poignant sight of a beautiful church adorned with a monument dedicated to the memory of the women, children, and farm workers who tragically lost their lives in the concentration camp nearby during the Anglo-Boer War. The presence of other notable monuments, such as the two Voortrekker monuments, the centenary celebration monument, and the 150-year monument, further enriched our understanding of the region's heritage. Despite our eagerness to explore, we encountered a slight setback when attempting to visit the concentration camp cemetery, which is now located on private property. Nevertheless, the highlight of our visit came in the form of a fascinating discovery: the home of Rear Admiral John Weston, the visionary behind Africa's first-ever aeroplane. Notably, we found intriguing evidence suggesting that Weston and his family might have been the pioneers of what we now know as Van Life, as he constructed the world's first RV and embarked on an extraordinary 18-month journey across Africa. Additionally, a remarkable but somber find during our time in Brandfort was the story of the unmarked grave of Vincent Van Gogh's youngest brother, Cornelius Van Gogh, adding yet another layer of historical significance to this remarkable town. Our time in Brandfort left us with a deep appreciation for its rich history and the exceptional individuals who have contributed to its unique tapestry. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #brandfort

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!
Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

S1 – Ep 359 – Theunissen – Captivating Sights and a Mix of Emotions!
Our visit to Theunissen in the Free State was filled with captivating sights and a mix of emotions. As we ventured into the town, we were immediately greeted by the awe-inspiring presence of a magnificent steam locomotive. Its imposing form stood as a testament to the town's rich history. One notable highlight was the train station, even though its active days seemed to be behind it. It was heartening to witness the presence of diligent security guards, demonstrating a commitment to preserving the town's heritage and infrastructure. Moving forward, our exploration led us to the Voortrekker Memorial, an important landmark situated in front of the Town Hall. This significant piece of history was being carefully safeguarded by dedicated security personnel as well. The sense of reverence and appreciation for the past was palpable, and I felt privileged to have the opportunity to wander through this meaningful space. As we continued our journey through Theunissen, the local school caught our eye. Its expansive grounds and impressive facilities were indicative of a community that prioritises education and values its youth. As our visit drew to a close, we encountered the town's sports fields, a stark contrast to the vibrant memories they likely held. These fields, which once echoed with the laughter and cameraderie of games, now remained untouched, a poignant reminder of the shifting tides of time. Our time in Theunissen was a blend of admiration for its historical significance, a tinge of sadness for its neglected spaces, and an appreciation for the enduring spirit of its people. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #theunissen

Ep. 15: Camping at Little Rock Holiday Resort, Ladybrand / My first visit to the Eastern Free State
Welcome to episode 15. Thank you for tuning in.
Please remember to Like and Subscribe.
In this episode I travel to the Eastern Free State and visit Little Rock on the outskirts of Ladybrand.
The Eastern Free State is the most scenic part of the Free State and worth a visit. Beautiful sandstone mountains surround this peaceful camp site on all sides.
Little Rock offers everything you need if you want to get away from the hustle of the big city life. Here you can relax and recharge your batteries.
The camp site is well maintained and the ablution facilities are neat and clean.
They also have 14 chalets if you are not into camping. There is a swimming pool, bar, restaurant and even hiking trails.
I can recommend Little Rock and I hope to camp there again sometime in the future.

S1 – Ep 387 – Buffeljagsrivier and Suurbraak – Bridges and Mountain Vistas!
After a restful night in Caledon, our journey led us to the charming villages of Buffeljagsrivier and Suurbraak. What truly captivated us were the exquisite old bridges in Buffeljagsrivier, particularly the weathered wooden one that had seen better days. Imagining its former glory when it was in active use was a mesmerising experience. As we explored further, we discovered the station before making our way to Suurbraak. This picturesque village unveiled a rich history and a treasure trove of meticulously-restored old dwellings, church buildings, and breathtaking mountain vistas, leaving us in awe of its timeless beauty. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #buffeljagsrivier #suurbraak

S1 – Ep 353 – Hoopstad – Japie Greyling, the Brave Child Hero!
After leaving Bloemhof, our excitement at entering the Free State was short-lived as we navigated the worst road we have experienced on our travels yet, on our way to Hoopstad. However, the situation improved after about 15 kilometers. We were greeted by vast stretches of maize fields as far as the eye could see the deeper we got into the Free State. Approaching Hoopstad, the towering concrete silo's stood prominently on the horizon, as a testament to the town's agricultural roots. The strong farming community was evident as we explored the town, and we were struck by the grandeur of yet another magnificent church building at its centre. On the church grounds, we discovered the memorial of the brave child hero, Japie Greyling, whose remarkable bravery during the Anglo-Boer War left a lasting impression. The sight of the Correctional Facility in town added to the town's intriguing mix of places to see. Despite the initial challenges we had with the condition of the road, it was an overall fulfilling and informative visit to Hoopstad. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #hoopstad

BLOEMFONTEIN TOUR 2018 - DAY 3: BLOEMFONTEIN
Bloemfontein city sightseeing
Surviving a South African Bus Adventure: From TERRIFYING Layovers to beautiful scenery!
Many people have asked about the safety of taking a bus in South Africa. To investigate, we decided to embark on a 1500-kilometer journey with Intercape. During the trip, we made several stops to rest and purchase snacks and provisions, which felt completely secure. However, our arrival in Bloemfontein in the dark was daunting, and we had a 3-hour layover that made us feel very uneasy. We filmed very little during this time due to concerns about potential theft. The following leg of the journey lasted 9 hours without a stop. Although I am glad we had the experience, I am uncertain if I would do it again.
