Top 10 Texas State Parks
Top 10 Texas State Parks
In this video, Sharon and MiLena, the Two Tired Teachers, choose their 10 top favorite Texas State Parks. The choices are made for various reasons which the teachers will attempt to explain after each announces a favorite park.
The first pick went to Sharon who named Caprock Canyons State Park as her very favorite. The primary reason she chose Caprock Canyons is because of the bison. We saw really big bulls and calves that were so young that they hadn't yet begun to turn brown. Another reason Sharon selected this park was the amazing trails.
MiLena's top choice was probably Caprock Canyons, but since Sharon had just talked about that one, MiLena chose Balmorhea State Park. The only real draw for this park is its pool. The pool is 25' deep in parts and it is 68 - 72 degrees year round.
Sharon's second park was Mission Tejas State Park. It is an east Texas park with fewer than 20 campsites. The park sits at the tip of the Davy Crockett National Forest.
MiLena's next choice is Lake Mineral Wells State Park. One reason she chose this park is the swimming area. The park is big, and it's one of the few, if not the only state park with rock climbing.
Our fifth choice is Palmetto State Park. it is a beautiful park that isn't far from San Antonio. Although we didn't get to spend much time there, we will return to really explore this gorgeous park.
Number 6 of our top ten Texas State Parks is Purtis Creek State Park. It isn't as large as MiLena remembered, but is a good size park. The campsites are well defined, and it is a very relaxing state Park.
Sharon's next pick was Tyler State Park because it has very easy access to Interstate 20. The swimming are is very nice in the spring fed pool.
Possum Kingdom State Park is number 8. It's a pretty park with some beautiful CCC work. The smaller campsites are extremely well defined. In the premium sites there is lots of overflow parking for boats or other toys that may not fit in on the camping pad. Warning: The rangers are serious about campers not parking on the grass.
Sharon's next to the last choice is South Llano River State Park in Junction, TX. Her reason for choosing this park is its proximity to Interstate 10. South Llano River State Park has done an amazing job of ADA accessible sites. Even some of the walk-in tent sites are ADA accessible with paved sidewalks going to and around the first few campsites.
Our last choice is Bonham State Park. It is a tiny park with lots of stuff to do. They rent paddle boats and maybe kayaks. The community uses this park on the weekends. It's a beautiful state park.
Sharon gave honorable mention to Fort Davis State Park. Fort Davis is a National Historic Site. The state park is not in the fort itself, but they are close.
MiLena's honorable mention is Palo Duro State Park. The Two Tired Teachers haven't been there as adults although they did go as kids. It offers the outdoor musical TEXAS about the early settlers and their struggles. Plus, the canyon is breathtakingly beautiful.
This is the second in a series of videos about our Texas State Parks because we love our parks. The first was an overview. The next one will list the top five swimming holes. The one after that will give you some resources to use when exploring the parks. The final video in the series will be about the Texas State Parks park pass. Some changes have been made and we want to let you know about those.

A day in small town Bonham, TX
We’re the first to admit, we don’t do many day trips. We like camping way too much for that. However, we could never get a campsite at Bonham State Park and since it’s less than an hour north of DFW, we decided to take a day and go explore.
We check out Sam Rayburn’s historical home and have an adventure at Bonham State Park that includes some wildlife sightings.
And of course, we had to end our day with our favorite Texas treat

Bonham, in Texas, Fannin County
Bonham is a city in Fannin County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,127 at the 2010 census.[4] It is the county seat of Fannin County.[5] James Bonham (the city's namesake) sought the aid of James Fannin (the county's namesake) at the Battle of the Alamo.
Bonham is part of the Texoma region.Bonham is located slightly west of the center of Fannin County in northeastern Texas. U.S. Route 82, a two-lane bypass, crosses the northern part of the city, leading east 37 miles (60 km) to Paris and west 27 miles (43 km) to Sherman. Texas State Highway 78 passes through the center of Bonham, leading north 12 miles (19 km) to the Oklahoma border at the Red River and south 10 miles (16 km) to Bailey. Texas State Highway 56, following an old routing of US 82, crosses Highway 78 in the center of Bonham, leading east 6 miles (10 km) to Dodd City and west 6 miles to Ector. Texas State Highway 121 leads southwest from Bonham 41 miles (66 km) to McKinney. Dallas is 72 miles (116 km) to the southwest via McKinney.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Bonham has a total area of 9.8 square miles (25.3 km2), all of it land.[4]
History
Bonham, one of the oldest cities in Texas, dates back to 1837 when Bailey Inglish built a two-story blockhouse named Fort Inglish. It was located about 2 miles (3 km) from the current downtown. Inglish and other acquaintances settled there in the summer of 1837, and the settlement was named Bois D'Arc. In 1843, the Congress of the Republic of Texas assigned the name Bloomington to the city, but finally renamed it Bonham, in honor of James Butler Bonham, a hero and defender of the Alamo. On February 2, 1848, Bonham was incorporated as a city. A 1936 statue of Bonham by Texas sculptor Allie Tennant graces the courthouse grounds.[6]
After the connection to the Texas and Pacific Railway the city began to grow, and in 1885 there were six churches, three colleges, two public schools, three weekly newspapers, a saw mill, two grain mills, a power plant, and about 2,300 inhabitants. 1890 saw the addition of streetcars, an ice plant, and the opening of the Texas Power and Light Company, the utility provider to the area. In 1925, the city was connected to natural gas lines.
During the Second World War, there was a training camp and an aviation school for the United States Army Air Forces in the vicinity of Bonham, as well as a prisoner-of-war camp for captured German soldiers. Parts of the camp, located approximately 0.5 miles north of US 82, can still be visited today.Homer Blankenship, Major League Baseball pitcher of 1920s

Bonham State Park - Texas State Parks
Bonham State Park - Texas State Parks
The Two Tired Teachers visited Bonham State Park in the summer of 2018. We arrive midweek and had our choice of campsites. By the weekend, all of the 14 RV sites were taken.
This small park has a day use area, a fishing pier, and a large swimming area. The day use area comes with a sand volleyball court. Kayaks and paddleboats are rented at the park.
Many of the trails are used by mountain bikes. The trails vary greatly in their terrain. Some are quite level while others have lots of roots and hills.
Bonham Lake is not part of the state park, but it is another option in Bonham. We give a shout out to Peggy for letting us know about this campground.
Also in Bonham is Sam Rayburn's home. Also in Bonham are the Sam Rayburn Library and the Sam Rayburn Museum.
Next door to the Sam Rayburn Library is Fort English. All of the buildings are open. They are primitive and they might provide some family fun.
Bonham State Park is well shaded and have very well defined campsites. The group area does have cabins.

Amie M.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Small and gorgeous but Small
One of the cheapest of the Texas State Parks. Tent only spots are 15 a night and comes with electricity. One bathroom for everyone which makes for a walk. Decent trails but many are closed for silly reasons. Within 15 minutes of Walmart.

Bonham State Park, TX... And a brief tour of the Caddo National Grasslands
My name is Lola (Lost On Land Again) and I love to travel around the country in my trusty SUV (Ethel) as often as possible. Thank you for joining me on my adventures!
In this episode I ran a recon mission to Bonham State Park and the Caddo National Grasslands in North Texas. I prefer boondocking/free camping spots, but I wanted to check these places out. It was an awesome Texas 'winter' weekend. Sorry in advance for extremely crappy camera footage. My tripod fell apart. Good times..
