Pomposa Abbey, Codigoro, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe
The Pomposa abbey located in the municipality of Codigoro in the province of Ferrara is an abbey dating back to the 9th century and one of the most important in all of Northern Italy. Since December 2014, the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities has managed it through the Emilia-Romagna Museum Complex, which in December 2019 became the Regional Directorate for Museums. The interior of the church has three naves, divided by Roman and Byzantine columns. The precious marble floor in opus sectile dates back to various periods and features monstrous animals, geometric motifs, vegetal and figurative elements. Among the allegories the lion symbolizes the resurrection of Christ, the dragon the evil that is always defeated, the deer is Christ, the birds with resting wings represent the human condition, etc.. On the walls there are fourteenth-century frescoes of the Bolognese school, with stories from the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Apocalypse of John executed respectively on the upper, middle and lower bands. In addition to St. John in the ecstasy of Patmos, among the images of the Apocalypse we find the Lamb within a clip-on halo rising on a painted capital as an extension of the real one below, with its paws resting on the book of seals; the four cherubs known as the living of the tetramorph; the four knights in white, red, black, greenish colors with as many symbolic attributes: crown, sword, scales, hell. Then there are other scenes: God with the book of seven seals; the twenty-four elders; the archangel Michael against the devil; the seven-headed beast; the hydra that threatens the Church depicted as a confident female figure since it dominates time, that is the moon placed at her feet (Revelation of John 12, 1-4), the charge of the sulphurous cavalry, the woman-Ecclesia (Church) with a slight swelling of the belly because
she is pregnant, the devil-bat, John who retires to meditate in the temple (closing of the southern fresco band), the Lamb on Mount Zion with the one hundred and fifty thousand redeemed in his presence, etc. The mobility of the Pomposian knights evokes the theme of the wild hunt linked to the gang of Hellequin (Harlequin), fruit of the French imagination that has infected the folklore of medieval Europe. And the bas-relief from the end of the 11th century reveals a typically Burgundian style, to the point of betraying a probable link with Cluny. Christ judges and fights through the Verbum Dei (Word of God) which leads us to a later vision in which an angel protrudes from a solar oculus to invite the birds of the sky to the banquet of God. This angel is a symbol of the Church. At the end of the cycle, the fresco on the northern wall near the apse shows an angel with majestic wings who is driving the dragon back into the abyss. Among the images relating to the Old Testament we find: Adam and Eve and original sin, Cain and Abel, Noah's ark and the universal flood, episodes from the life of Abraham, Jacob and his dream, Joseph and his brothers, the translation of the Ark of the Covenant, David and Goliath, the prophet Daniel in the lions' den, the prophet Elijah kidnapped in heaven by a chariot of fire. The New Testament opens with the fresco of the Annunciation with an urban fabric behind it. Followed by the Nativity, the Adoration of the Magi, the massacre of the innocents, the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, the Baptism of Jesus, the Transformation of water into wine (wedding at Cana) in which the spouses are born. The two panels that close the middle band of the southern wall of the central nave concern the evangelical passages relating to the daughter of the archisynagogue Jairus and the son of the widow of Naim, both resurrected by Jesus. The first evangelical scene on the northern part of the abbey is the resurrection of Lazarus of Bethany. This is followed by the entry of Christ into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the Garden of Olives (Jesus departs from the disciples, the acceptance of the sacrifice, the kiss of Judas). The Crucifixion represents a composite Christ, pale and without a crown of thorns, reminiscent of the frescoes by Giotto in the Scrovegni Chapel and by Giusto dei Menabuoi in the Baptistery of Padua; the arms outstretched in agony and the tense bones of the side evoke the theme of the crucifixus dolorosus, an intertwining of physical and interior suffering clearly present in the polychrome wooden crucifixes of the 14th-15th century.

Earthquake damage north of Carpi, Italy
There were two major earthquakes in Emiglia Romagna on 20 May 2012 and 29 May 2012 which caused 27 deaths and widespread damage. You can see in my film from Carpi, that the magnificent cathedral there was still covered in scaffolding four years later and off bounds to the public. In this film I visit the location of a former restaurant which collapsed. The restaurant was located on the road leading from Carpi towards Fosoli, another place you can see in a film on this site.
The earthquake in the early hours of 20 May 2012 had a magnitude of 6.1 and the epicentre was around Finale Emilia, Bondeno and Sermide. Two aftershocks of magnitude 5.2 occurred, one approximately an hour after the main even] and another approximately eleven hours after the main event. Seven people were killed. A friend described it to me as being like the sound of a train passing underground.
The earthquake of 29 May 2012 was around 10km below the ground and had a magnitude of 5.8 with the epicentre in Medolla. It took 20 lives.

The park takes its name from the adjoining building erected at the end of the sixteenth century and is the largest of the public gardens within the city walls. The surface is about 4 hectares. Designed in 1780 by the Ferrara architect Luigi Bertelli for the Marquis Camillo Bevilacqua, this important garden was remembered for the numerous sculptures that adorned it and for the great variety of citrus and flowering plants that perfumed its magnificent paths.
In the mid-nineteenth century the Counts Massari acquired the building by modifying the whole complex as an English park. The design of the flower beds is that of the nineteenth century and many trees are more than centuries old: in addition to the two Cedars of Lebanon at the entrance, there are some yews, an imposing ginkgo and the gigantic oaks at the entrance to Corso Ercole I d'Este. Since 1936 it has been owned by the Municipality of Ferrara, which has turned it into a public park.

Jakie są atrakcje Ferrary? Gdzie znajduje się najstarsza winiarnia na świecie? Co zwiedzić w Ferrarze? Jak przewozić rowery we Włoszech? Gdzie można zwiedzić prawdziwe lochy? Cofamy się w czasie do Średniowiecza. ZAPRASZAMY DO FERRARY!!!
Witajcie w kolejnym odcinku :)
Miasto łączy w sobie wpływy średniowieczne i renesansowe.

Ferrara Italy • Ferrara Tour Including the Castello Estense in Ferrara Italia
Ferrara Italy Tour Including the Castello Estense in Ferrara Italia. We tour of the Renaissance city of Ferrara, including the 14thC Estense Castle with its moat, drawbridges, marble balconies and sumptuous apartments, and the Schifanoia Palace with its fabulous 15thC frescoes. We also see the cathedral façade with its sculpted images described as an Illustrated Bible.
Ferrara, which grew up around a ford over the River Po, has a rich cultural heritage with renowned artists, writers, musicians and scientists all leaving their mark. In the 15th and 16th centuries Ferrara became an intellectual and artistic centre that attracted the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance. One of Ferrara's most famous university graduates is Nicolaus Copernicus (1503).
The town has broad streets and numerous palaces dating from the 14th and 15th century when it hosted the court of the House of Este. The town is still surrounded by more than 5 miles of ancient walls, mainly built in the 15th and 16th centuries. Together with those of Lucca, they are the best preserved Renaissance walls in Italy.
The origin of Ferrara is uncertain. It was probably settled by the inhabitants of the lagoons at the mouth of the Po River. Ferrara first appears in a document of 753 AD.
The House of Este settled in Ferrara in the 12th century and for four centuries Ferrara was the uninterrupted seat of the d'Este court. During the reign of Ercole d'Este I, one of the most significant patrons of the arts in late 15th and early 16th century Italy, Ferrara grew into a cultural centre, renowned for music as well as for visual arts. Alfonso I, son of Ercole, was also an important patron. His preference for instrumental music resulted in Ferrara becoming an important centre of composition for the lute. Alfonso married the notorious Lucrezia Borgia.
The architecture of Ferrara benefited from the genius of Biagio Rossetti who, in 1484, was asked by Ercole I to redesign the plan of the city. The resulting Addizione Erculea is one of the most important and beautiful examples of renaissance city planning and contributed to the selection of Ferrara as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
REGIONAL SIGHTS
The most iconic building of the town is the ancient ducal fortress Castello Estense. Sited in the very center of the town, it's a brick building surrounded by a moat, with four massive bastions. It was built starting in 1385 and partly restored in 1554 with the addition of pavilions on the top of the towers. The fortress, with its drawbridges and unusual battlements, also houses marble balconies and sumptuous apartments.
The ancient City Hall, renovated in the 18th century, was the earlier residence of the Este family. The former Cathedral of Saint George was begun in 1135 when the Romanesque lower part of the main façade and the side façades were completed. The upper part of the main façade, with arcades of pointed arches and the elaborate relief sculptures depicting the Last Judgement, date from the 13th century. The campanile, in the Renaissance style, dates from 1451-1493, but the last story was added at the end of the 16th century. The interior was restored in the Baroque style in 1712.
Ferrara has many early Renaissance palaces. Among the finest palaces is Palazzo dei Diamanti, named after the diamond points into which the façade's stone blocks are cut. The palazzo houses the National Picture Gallery with a large collection of the school of Ferrara. The Casa Romei is the best preserved Renaissance building in Ferrara. It was the residence of Giovanni Romei, related to Este family by marriage. It did not fall into decay because it was inherited by the nuns of the Corpus Domini order who lived there without making any changes to its structure. Much of the
decoration in the inner rooms has been saved. The Corpus Domini Monastery contains tombs of the House of Este.
