Fresno's Underground Garden was created by one man's American dream | Bartell's Backroads

Baldassare Forestiere immigrated to Fresno, California from Sicily in 1901 with a dream. Unfortunately, he didn't become the citrus farmer like he had wished, but he did create what's now a popular historic landmark, Forestiere Underground Gardens.

S3E2 Central California - Forestiere Underground Gardens

Join me as I visit the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, CA. A highlight on any visit to California's central valley, the Forestiere Underground Gardens is a wonderful place to visit.

In the early 1900s, Sicilian immigrant, citrus grower and visionary Baldassare Forestiere began turning what was useless farmland into a vast network of rooms, tunnels and courtyards as a subterranean escape from the sweltering Central Valley summer heat.

Using only shovels, picks and other hand tools, Baldassare was inspired to excavate for forty years, going as deep as 25 feet underground and spanning over 10 acres. He grew fruit trees and grapevines underground - many of which are still thriving today!

Today, guests from around the world tour through his grottos, passageways and underground homes. I think Baldassare would be thrilled by all of the guests marveling at his life's work today and finding inspiration underground.

Finding the Exact Center of California

Just north of Fresno on California State Route 99 is where the palm meets the pine, the symbolic point where Southern California and Northern California meet, but the geographic center of California is actually located miles away, just outside of the town of North Fork.

North Fork was once known as Brown's and was a lumber town for over a century until the mill closed in 1996. Now it is home to the Sierra Mono Museum and is the start of the Sierra Scenic Byway. And of course it is known for being in the center of California, as it proclaims on the sign as you enter town.

In this video we travel to North Fork and check out the center of California and find out what is there.
