The wine regions of Bordeaux are a large number of wine growing areas, differing widely in size and sometimes overlapping, which lie within the overarching wine region of Bordeaux, centred on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole area of the Gironde department of Aquitaine.
The Bordeaux region is naturally divided by the Gironde Estuary into a Left Bank area which includes the Médoc and Graves and a Right Bank area which includes the Libournais, Bourg and Blaye.
The Médoc is itself divided into Haut-Médoc (the upstream or southern portion) and Bas-Médoc (the downstream or northern portion, often referred to simply as Médoc).
There are various sub-regions within the Haut-Médoc, including St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux and the less well known areas of AOC Moulis and Listrac.
Graves includes the sub-regions of Pessac-Léognan and Sauternes (among others), and Sauternes in turn includes the sub-region of Barsac.
The Libournais includes the sub-regions of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol (among others).
There is an additional wine region of Entre-Deux-Mers, so called because it lies between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, which combine to form the Gironde.
This region contains several less well known sweet wine areas of Cadillac and St. Croix de Mont.
All of these regions (except the Libournais) have their own appellation and are governed by Appellation d'origine contrôlée laws which dictate the permissible grape varieties, alcohol level, methods of pruning and picking, density of planting and appropriate yields as well as various winemaking techniques.
Bordeaux wine labels will usually include the region on the front if all the grapes have been harvested in a specific region and the wine otherwise complies with the AOC requirements.
There are about 50 AOCs applicable to the Bordeaux region.
Both red and white Bordeaux wines are almost invariably blended.
The permissible grape varieties in red Bordeaux are: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
While wine making styles vary, a rule of thumb is that the Left Bank is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon based with the Right Bank being more Merlot based.
The Graves area produces both red wine (from the grapes previously mentioned) and white wine from the Sauvignon blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle grapes.
The area of Sauternes (including Barsac) is known for its botrytized dessert wines.

Best Natural Place to Visit in France (Drone View)
France, officially the French Republic (French: Républiquefrançaise), is a country with which almost every traveler has a relationship. Many dreams of its joie de vivre shown by the countless restaurants, picturesque villages and world-famous gastronomy. Some come to follow the trail of France's great philosophers, writers and artists, or to immerse in the beautiful language it gave the world. And others still are drawn to the country's geographical diversity with its long coastlines, massive mountain ranges and breathtaking farmland vistas.
France has been the world's most popular tourist destination for quite some time. It received 83.7 million visitors in 2014, although these figures are highly skewed by the number of people who frequent the country for the weekend, particularly to visit Disneyland Paris, Europe's most popular visitor attraction. France is one of the most geographically diverse countries in Europe, containing areas as different from each other as urban chic Paris, the sunny French Riviera, long Atlantic beaches, the winter sports resorts of the French Alps, the castles of the Loire Valley, rugged Celtic Brittany and the historian's dream that is Normandy.
When to travel
If possible, try to avoid French school holidays and Easter, because hotels are very likely to be overbooked and traffic on the roads is simply awful.
Holidays: search internet for French school holidays, as they vary from region to region. Mostly, the winter holidays are 10 Feb-10 Mar. The spring holidays are often 10 Apr-10 May. Also try to avoid travel around the 14th of July. (quatorze juillet) These times the roads are full of people, leading to the much-dreaded Black Friday traffic jams which can grow in length to over 160km (100 miles)!
Winter gets very cold, sometimes freezing. Make sure to bring appropriate clothing to keep you warm while visiting.
Hotels are very likely to be overbooked and road traffic will be awful during the 1 May, 8 May, 11 Nov, Easter Weekend, Ascension weekend too.
Although France is extremely safe, anyone from an openly religious, faith community may still need to exercise care when traveling in France.
Tourism in France directly contributed 77.7 billion euros to gross domestic product, 30% of which comes from international visitors and 70% from domestic tourism spending. The total contribution of travel and tourism represents 9.7% of GDP and supports 2.9 million jobs (10.9% of employment) in the country.[1] Tourism contributes significantly to the balance of payments.
France was visited by 85.7 million foreign tourists in 2013, making it the most popular tourist destination in the world. France ranks fifth in tourist spending behind the United Kingdom, United States, China and Spain.

Bordeaux, France Markets & Villages Travels with Darley Episode Preview
World-class wine, medieval villages, museums and markets, the Bordeaux region of France is truly a feast for the senses. Darley takes a river cruise to explore villages that reveal history around every scenic turn. This episode helps viewers discover the quaint wine hills of Saint-Émilion along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and the history of winemaking at La Cité du Vin.
Solene Jaboulet leads Darley through La Cité du Vin, where Darley discovers wine related to pop culture, including the hit TV series “Friends,” before wine tasting with a view at this unique museum and cultural center. At Marché des Capucins, which has been Bordeaux's largest city center food market for centuries, Darley introduces viewers to locally produced Bordeaux products, including cheese, wine and sausage.
Darley cruises outside of Bordeaux to learn more about the region’s history, visiting Fort Medoc and Blaye. Inside the Citadel of Blaye, she explores the history of Bordeaux’s defensive systems, including this fortress designed by Vauban, a famous engineer and military strategist.
Further into the heart of Bordeaux in Saint-Émilion, Darley visits Château Beau-Séjour Bécot, a wine estate up on a limestone plateau just a stone’s throw away from the village of Saint-Émilion. Local tour guide Nathalie Lassegues walks Darley through the medieval village of Saint-Émilion, named after a Benedictine monk who became famous for working miracles.
Traveling along the Dordogne River to Libourne, well known for its local market, Darley discovers why star chefs from Saint-Émilion, and locals, too, frequent this bustling market. She tries gâteau à la broche, a type of rotisserie cake, a French specialty from the Pyrenees mountains in the South of France, before ending back on the water to cruise on to another adventure.

Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is a commune in the south-west of France , located in the department of Charente-Maritime , in the region of New Aquitaine . Its inhabitants are called Saint-Palaisiens and Saint-Palaisiennes. Resort who took off in the late xix th century, Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is a residential town in the near western suburbs of Royan , the second largest city in the canton of Tremblade .
Located at the mouth of the Gironde estuary , facing the Atlantic Ocean , on the coast of Beauty , it belongs geographically to Royannais and to the peninsula of Arvert . It preserves numerous testimonies of the seaside architecture of the Belle Époque to the Roaring Twenties (villas, chalets, castels and other follies with varied styles), in the heart of a forest of pines forming part of theforest of the Coubre or the forest of Combots d'Ansoine . Its city center, consisting of modern buildings, is structured around a central square, lined with shops and restaurants, and a 16-hectare park with an artificial lake and recreational facilities.
The coastline is home to five beaches, of various sizes, linked together by a landscaped walking path (Douaniers trail) from which picturesque rock formations such as the Devil's Bridge or the Puits de l'Auture can be observed . North of the town, the site of the Grande-Côte is formed by a large rectilinear beach that evokes the wild coast or the beaches of the Silver Coast . A tourist center (shops, bars, restaurants) has been set up nearby, taking advantage of a balcony overlooking the ocean.
The city of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer belongs to the western sector of the urban community of Royan Atlantique , an intercommunal structure comprising 81 896 inhabitants (2014). It is known locally for its nightlife, which makes it one of the favorite places of the youth of the Kingdom, as well as for its progressive rock festival , the Crescendo festival , held every year in August since 1999.
The town of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer is located in the south-west of the department of Charente-Maritime , in the former province of Saintonge . Belonging to the South Atlantic, it can be attached to two large geographical groups, the Grand Ouest French and the Grand Sud-Ouest French . It is a city and seaside resort of the agglomeration royannaise, on the coast of Beauty . Although belonging to the large residential suburbs of Royan , it retains its own identity. It belongs to the township of La Tremblade (of which it is the second city by the number of inhabitants) and to thedistrict of Rochefort .

On Day 42 of my walk to Bordeaux, 660km in from Paris, I entered the appellation Bordeaux vineyards just before St Aubin de Blaye. I don’t have far to go now to reach my destination.

Blaye Citadel and Town
The Bordeaux town of Blaye offers a mix of religion, history, culture, art and adventure to visitors.
The Blaye Citadel is a 17th century military complex that has been included in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 2008. Inside the Citadel’s thick walls, tourists will discover a historic defense system, underground passages, an old prison, a museum and even a small village.
Another attraction in Blaye is the ruins of Chateau des Rudel. This is a medieval castle built in the 12th century but was mostly destroyed in the Wars of Religion by the Calvinists.
Famous for it's wine - Cotes de Blaye red wine is produced in the area and can be experienced at the Maison du vin, a famous stop for wine tasting as well as for meeting the wine makers.

The next stop on our 14-day road trip along the West Coast of France is to the market town on Blaye. Before our overnight stop at one of the most beautiful villages in France (voted and awarded many times - although there are over 150 on the actual list), Talmont Sur Gironde, which we love so much we stay over in the car park as it is also an aire (with no services).
