🐏 Explore Blackall Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Blackall
🐏 Explore Blackall Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Blackall
Blackall is a great outback town on the banks of the Barcoo River, 964 kilometres from Brisbane. Explorer Major Thomas Mitchell discovered Blackall in 1846; it was gazetted in 1868 and became the centre of a thriving sheep industry.

04:12 The Black Stump
04:28 Jack Howe Memorial
04:48 Pioneer Bore
05:15 Ram Park Museum
05:45 Sunset at the Roly Poly Sculpture
Today Blackall is the centre of a huge cattle industry, but it celebrates its past connections with the wool and sheep industry with the Blackall Woolscour, Ram Park and sculpture of legendary shearer Jack Howe.
When we visited Blackall, we started the day with coffee and cake at the Lodge on Hawthorn, then swam at the Blackall Aquatic Centre before exploring the Blackall Wool Scour. We then wandered around Blackall, looking at the murals and sculptures, discovered the black stump and visited Ram Park. We finished the day watching the sunset at the Roly Poly sculpture.
The Lodge on Hawthorn is a beautiful heritage-listed building with a cafe, antique and gift shop. We enjoyed our coffee and cake and a wander around the lovely gardens.
In 1885, Blackall was the first Outback town to start drilling an artesian bore; today, the Blackall Aquatic Centre uses these natural artesian waters in its thermal spa and swimming pool. It is open daily, and visitors can swim, relax and revive in the lovely warm water.
The Blackall Woolscour operated from 1908 to 1978 and is Australia’s last remaining steam-operated wool-washing plant. Passionate volunteers conduct guided tours several times a day, where you will learn about the Woolscour and the sheep industry.
We wandered around Blackall, admiring the attractive Street Art and the life-sized sculptures.
Blackall was the birthplace of the Perry Brothers Circus, the first circus to circumnavigate Australia and start the nation's circus industry. On display in Banks Park, you can see ‘Jumbo’, the Elephant.
The Black Stump was used for surveying purposes and permanently marked the original Astro Station established in 1887. Anything west of this point is said to be ‘beyond the black stump’.
Local shearer Jack Howe put Blackall on the map in 1892 at the ‘Alice Downs station when he set a world record by shearing 321 sheep in seven hours and 40 minutes. It took another 58 years before anyone could match this feat, and that shearer was using machine shears.
Drilling commenced on Queensland's first artesian bore at the Pioneer Bore site in 1885; you can see the artesian water, which is 58 degrees and a lovely mural and two heritage farm machines here.
You can see a large Ram, a heritage railway, old buildings and machinery at the Ram Park Museum.

🌳 Explore Barcaldine Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Barcaldine
Barcaldine is situated on the junction of the Capricorn and Landsborough Highways, 1072 kilometres from Brisbane, and is known as the Garden City of the West. Barcaldine is home to the Tree of Knowledge and the reputed birthplace of the Australian Labour Party.
On our recent visit to Barcaldine, we started the day with coffee and cake at Roses ’n’ Things Tea Gardens, saw the Tree of Knowledge, and wandered around town looking at the heritage buildings and sculptures. We then explored the Australian Workers Heritage Centre and finished the day with Pizza at Barcy Base Camp and admired the Tree of Knowledge all lit up in the evening.

03:02 Pat Ogden Tower
03:33 Heritage Trail

05:52 Bacy's Base Camp - Pizza

Roses ’n’ Things Tea Gardens is a lovely cafe surrounded by beautiful gardens on Coolibah Street. The Tea Gardens are open from 9.00 am to 2.00 pm, Wednesday to Sunday from April to October, for delicious morning and afternoon teas and light lunches.
The Tree of Knowledge was a ghost gum that grew outside the Railway Station for 180 years until 2006 when an unknown culprit poisoned it. The famous tree has since been preserved and placed under an award-winning timber structure that was constructed to protect the preserved tree and celebrate its importance in Australia’s history.
As we wander along Oak Street, we learn about Australian History, including the Shearers Strike, and see sculptures, an old Windmill and the Barcaldine Tropic of Capricorn sign.
Behind the Visitor Centre is the Pat Ogden Tower, where you can climb up the spiral staircase to the viewing deck and enjoy 360-degree views over the Barcaldine Township.
Along the Heritage Trail, you will see many significant historical sites, each with a sign providing interesting information. The Heritage Listed Masonic Lodge was built in 1901 and is one of the most unusual buildings in Barcaldine. It is constructed from Iron and Wood with a painted facade to make it look like it's made from bricks.
The Heritage Listed St Peter’s Anglican Church was built in 1899 and is still used for Church services today. The Radio Picture Theatre opened in April 1926 and still operates as a movie theatre today with the original canvas seats and art deco frieze above the screen.
The Australian Workers Heritage Centre is a monument to Australia’s working men and women. It is spread across 2 hectares of landscaped gardens, with a lovely central billabong. An extensive range of exhibits, photographs and audio-visual presentations tell the stories of Australia's working people, and you will need several hours to see them all.

🤠 Explore Longreach Queensland ~ Things to do in and around Longreach
Located 1200 kilometres northwest of Brisbane, Longreach is the largest town in Central Queensland and is known as the Heart of the Outback.
It is a popular outback destination due to its world-class museums, stunning sunsets and unique experiences. Longreach became a town in 1887 and was named after the “long reach” of the Thomson River, on which it is situated.

03:25 Drover's Sunset Cruise and Smithy's Outback Dinner & Show
04:30 Qantas Museum
05:25 Ilfracombe Rail Excursion
06:30 Powerhouse Museum
We spent a week in Longreach, and in this video, we will explore the town and show you highlights from the Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the Drover’s Sunset Cruise and Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show—as well as the Qantas Museum, the Ilfracombe Rail Excursion and the Powerhouse Museum.
All the streets in Longreach are named after birds, and Eagle Street is the main street running through the town centre. It has a great selection of cafes, hotels, restaurants and shops to browse in.
The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience includes a 45-minute ride on the horse-drawn Stagecoach, a delicious outback “Smoko”, a classic Australian bush movie in the old theatre and an Old Time Tent Show. After a leisurely walk around town, it’s time to hang on to your hats as the horses gallop along the bush track. This is the only place in Australia where you can gallop in a stagecoach, and it's a lot of fun!

At the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the state-of-the-art self-guided audio tour brings the Museum’s themed galleries and exhibits to life. You will learn about the harsh conditions the stockmen endured and other interesting stories about the past. The highlight of our visit was the Outback Stockman's Live Show, where Lachie Cossor entertained us with stories and songs, skilful horse riding, whip cracking and sheep mustering skills.

On the Drover’s Sunset Cruise, we boarded the Longreach Explorer and meandered down the Thompson River. We stopped at Sunset Bend and enjoyed the incredible sunset before returning for Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show. Back at Smithy’s, we enjoyed a lovely Lamb Hotpot and Crispy Barramundi dinner and dessert under the stars and were entertained by the amusing Owen Blundell.

The Qantas Founders Museum tells the history of Australia's national airline from its early beginnings in Outback Queensland in the 1920s to the present day. It is bought to life through various life-sized exhibits, historical artifacts and interactive displays. We enjoyed the Economy Experience, which includes entry to the Museum’s Main Entrance Hall and the National Heritage Hangar. There is a range of other experiences, including tours of the Airpark, Wing Walks and Luminescent Longreach, the evening light show.

On the Historic Ilfracombe Excursion, operated by Outback Rail Adventure, two beautifully restored Silver Bullet railmotors take us on a leisurely half-day trip from Longreach to Ilfracombe. In Ilfracombe, we have time to explore the Wellshot Centre, the Lynn Cameron Machinery Mile and Langenbaker House before enjoying lunch at the Wellshot Hotel.

At the Powerhouse Museum we explore the Generating Complex which houses 10 massive engines that were used to provide power to Longreach between 1921 and 1985. We also wander through Nogo Cottage which was built in 1918 and depicts how families lived between 1938 and 1950.

What Is A Blackwater River?
The Edisto River is the longest free-flowing blackwater river in North America. But what is a blackwater river and why is the water black? Tune in as Ranger James explains it all to us.
Plan your trip to Aiken State Park here:
Blackdown Tablelands National Park (QLD)
During our trip ‘once around Australia’ we will create highlight videos about the places we liked the most.
This video is about Blackdown Tablelands (QLD). It is located in Central Queensland and is a must see!
Once you get there, there is a steep road leading up to the top of the tablelands and Horseshoe Lookout. From this lookout you have a stunning view over the Bowen Basin and it is recommend to watch the sunset there. If you wanna drive a bit further in, the only option is a really bad dirt road with lots of corrugations. It will bring you to some small hikes and a campground as well as to the Rainbow Falls where you can swim in the rock pool. This was our absolute favourite!
We hope you enjoy the video and follow our trip as well as our next highlight videos!

Long before outback Queensland had planes, trains or automobiles, Cobb & Co stagecoaches were one of the most important modes of transport. In this video, we join Outback Pioneers on their popular Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience in Longreach. It provides a true taste of 'horse power' on a section of the old Longreach-Windorah mail route.
The ride — the only one of its kind in Australia — is followed by a ‘smoko’ of fluffy scones with jam and cream, and a generous dollop of cornball humor in the Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show (included in the cost of your Cobb & Co ticket).
