There's tons of videos about Skopje and Ohrid, but what about Bitola? Well, it wasn't in the dumbass guidebooks for travel vlogers, I guess.
However, Bitola (Macedonia) has a lot to offer. For example, Heraclea Lyncestis: the ruins of an ancient city that was both Greek and roman. These ruins are very well preserved and I was fascinated by the fact that Bitola has better attractions than the similar ones in Sofia, Bulgaria and Thessaloniki, Greece. Who knew?!

Underrated MACEDONIA | BITOLA Bazaar & Typical Balkan Market 🇲🇰
Join us as we explore the beautiful city of Bitola here in sunny Macedonia 🇲🇰
We checked out the windy streets of the old bazaar (one of our favourites in the balkans) then headed to the shirok sokak which is the main pedestrian walking street in Bitola and always brimming with life every hour of the day.
We spent quite a bit of time wandering around the green Market or covered market and got some halva aswell as a grape drink which is basically liquid crack, we got a few more bits including some dried fruits from a lovely lady and met many friendly locals all willing to chat.
Macedonia is becoming one of our all time favourites it's really shining I don't get why there are no tourists here there missing out on so much, oh well more for us to enjoy! 🇲🇰🇲🇰🇲🇰

In this episode, David takes us around Macedonia to show us what to see and do in Bitola.
The city of Bitola is a mix of ancient and modern traditions. It is small enough to easily explore by foot, and will give you the opportunity to get very familiar Macedonian culture. Heraclea Lyncestis is an ancient site just 2 kilometers from Bitola. It is known for its Greek and Roman architecture, especially its colorful mosaic floors, which are exceptional examples of early Christian art. Don’t forget to admire the amphitheater during your visit to the site.
Magnolia Square is the main square of Bitola. There are several landmarks surrounding the square: Mosque, the Clock Tower, statue of Phillip II of Macedon (in the center of the square) and the beginning of Sirok Sokak, the main pedestrian boulevard of the city.
While exploring around Bitola, you have to stroll through the Old Bazaar. This is one of the city’s most important cultural and social meeting points. Stop at the fruit and vegetable market of the Old Bazaar. It’s really quite colorful and lively. See what produce is in season when you go!
The Old Bazaar is a place to get daily errands done and a great opportunity to purchase souvenirs. Next up on David’s tour is the Museum of Bitola, which holds ancient artifacts and memorabilia from the Balkan struggle for independence. The museum itself used to be a military academy. There are several exhibits and halls dedicated to the academy's most famous student - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, also known as the first president of Turkey and “Father of the Turks”.
Sirok Sokak Street is the perfect place to get a coffee and people watch. It’s a Must-Do when in Bitola. If you don’t, it’s like you were never here.
Right outside the city (5-minute drive) is the village of Dihovo, which is a great place to visit on a day trip. Villa Dihovo is a unique experience for all who visit. If you choose to come here to dine, you’ll enjoy a pleasant array of Macedonian specialties and refreshing salads made from vegetable grown on the property. Villa Dihovo is also a bed and breakfast. The only thing with a fixed price here is the alcohol, which is definitely something you don’t see every day.
David also visited a bee farm in Dihovo and was able to try the honey straight out of the comb. The bee farm also sells honey in jars, which is a great gift to take back home with you. Give yourself an extra day in Bitola so you want to enjoy the flora and fauna of nearby Pelister National Park. Hiking is the most popular activity here.

Let’s travel to Bitola, North Macedonia, the second largest city in the country after Skopje. It makes a good stopover between Skopje and Ohrid with its compact size and pleasant walking street lined with cafes and good shopping. The top drawcard is the well-preserved ancient city Heraclea built by Philip of Macedon in the 4th century BC, with ampitheatre, bath, and colorful restored mosaics. Few tourists stop here so you have the place to yourself!

Situated in the Balkan Peninsula in southeast Europe, North Macedonia is a wonderful mix of history, nature and culture. With Greek, Roman and Ottoman historic sites, and dazzling lakes, rivers and mountains, you’re in for a real treat in one of Europe’s most offbeat destinations.
North Macedonia’s capital Skopje is not only the country’s political centre, but also the heart of its cultural, economic, and academic sectors. It is one of the oldest inhabited cities of Europe, and its Ottoman and Byzantine era sites are a delight to behold. The old town of Skopje (also known as Čaršija) is the best place in the city to witness its historic Ottoman structures including mosques, museums and handicrafts shops and also experience its great nightlife. The bordered 15th-century stone bridge and the 5th-century Tvrdina Kale Fortress are the most iconic landmarks of the capital. Sveti Spas Church (also known as Church of the Ascension of Jesus) is another must-visit historic site in Skopje. This 14th-century church is partially submerged underground as it was against the rules of the Ottomans to build a church taller than a mosque.
From Skopje, you can head out to Mavrovo National Park, which is about 100km away from the city centre. The park is home to Mount Korab, the country’s highest peak and comprises beautiful gorges, dense pine forests and cascading waterfalls. Along with standard hiking and wildlife-watching, the park also houses a ski resort, which is the biggest in the country.
North Macedonia’s second-largest city Bitola is located in the southern region of the country. Known for its historic buildings and ruins like Heraclea Lyncestis, Bitola makes a great base for exploring the country’s oldest Pelister National Park. The park revolves around North Macedonia’s third-tallest mountain range Baba massif and offers excellent wildlife-watching and hiking opportunities. From Bitola, you can visit the 13th-century Treskavec Monastery which rises from Mount Zlato and houses colourful frescos and Ohrid, one of North Macedonia’s most fascinating cities. Ohrid is located in southwestern North Macedonia, near the border of Albania. The city sits on the edge of Lake Ohrid and is packed with historical monuments and lakeside restaurants and cafes. The historic Samoil’s Fortress which stands guard over the town and lake, and the St. John the Theologian church set on the lake’s shore are the most important landmarks.
Often overlooked by travellers in favour of other well known countries, North Macedonia is one of Europe’s best offbeat destinations. Its immense historical wealth, numerous religious landmarks, lovely natural landscapes and diverse cultural influences are bound to surprise all kinds of visitors and is especially a paradise for history buffs.
