HISTORY OF BAGRIAN

Bagrian is a village located in Sangrur District, in Punjab, India which has a significant place in Sikh history. Now Called it by Bagrian Haveli name. The House of Bagrian owned much of the land and the haveli in the village, where certain important artifacts that belonged to the Sikh Gurus are kept.

The bhai Family Of Bagrian
house of Bagrian is closely linked with the spread of Sikhism in the Malwa region of Punjab. Guru Arjun Dev Ji and later Guru Hargobind Sahib baptised the successive descendants of the family, i.e. Sindhu and Rup Chand. In recognition of the services of Rup Chand in the Sikh cause, Guru Hargobind named him as his own brother and bestowed on him the benediction of langer, a free kitchen, which to this day feeds the poor and those who visit the place. This benevolence was further graced when the last Guru, ordained that the descendants of the family would be considered as his descendants. Two of the brothers from the Bagrian family had accompanied Guru Gobind Singh to Nanded Sahib.
The House of Bagrian has been in the service of the Panth almost for four centuries. The Gurus have blessed the House to render service to humanity and spread the teachings of the Gurus far and wide. The benediction of langar was bestowed upon Bhai Roop Chand by the sixth Guru Har Gobind Sahib ji. The first Langar ever, was served at Bagrian Fort, more than 300 years ago, by Rup Chand. That tradition continues even today. More than 300 people are served Dal and Roti every single day. The House of Bagrian has served the cause of Sikh faith for centuries. The House of Bagrian has been held in high esteem by all the Sikh Maharajas. From cradle to the cremation, all ceremonies of the Sikh Royals are performed by the Bhai Sahib of Bagrian. Guru Teg Bahadurji decided that Bhai Roop Chand will perform the marriage ceremony of Guru Gobind Singh ji. So this legendary service was showered upon Bhai Sahib and He performed the marriage ceremony.

—————————————————
ARJAN SINGH, BHAYEE
(1875-1946), of Bagarian, titled chief much honoured in Sikh piety, was a descendant of Bhai Rup Chand, a devoted disciple of Guru Hargobind, who had bestowed on him the title `Bhai` (also written as Bhayee) or holy brother. Rup Chand belonged to the village of Vadda Ghar, in Amritsar district, but upon receiving Guru Hargobind`s blessing he founded (1631) a village in the Malva region of the Punjab which he named Bhai Rupa. Rup Chand`s sons, Bhai Param Singh and Bhai Dharam Singh, received the rites of Khalsa baptism at the hands of Guru Gobind Singh.
They accompanied the Guru to Nanded in the South. Param Singh is said to have died there while Dharam Singh was sent back to the Punjab by the Guru with many gifts, including a giitka or breviary and a sword which are still preserved by the descendants as sacred relics. Born in 1875 the son of Bhai Kishan Singh at Bagarian, a village now in Sangrur district, to which the family had shifted, Arjan Singh had his early education under his uncle Bhai Narain Singh who was a reputed man of letters and who taught him several modern Indian and classical languages. Arjan Singh succeeded to his estate when he was very young.
Besides his position as a landed aristocrat, he was acknowledged by the Sikh ruling chiefs of Patiala, Nabha,Jind, Faridkot, Kapurthala and Kalsia as a religious mentora status the Bhais of Bagarian had always enjoyed in view of the family having been blessed by the Gurus themselves. Bhai Arjan Singh himself administered the rites of initiation to Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala and Maharaja Ripudaman Singh of Nabha, and installed the latter on the throne after the death in 1911 of his father, Maharaja Sir Hira Singh.
He was chosen to be the first president of the Chief Khalsa Diwan established on 30 October 1902, serving in that capacity for nearly 15 years. In 1934, he presided over the Sarab Hind Sikh Samparadai Conference at Bhaini Sahib and in 1938 over the 27th Sikh Educational Conference at Amritsar. He was awarded by the British government the title of Sardar Bahadur in 1916, and, in June 1919, the Order of the British Empire was conferred upon him. He also served as president of the Khalsa Pratinidh Diwan, Ludhiana, and as a member of the Amritsar Khalsa College Managing Committee as well as of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Bhai Arjan Singh died at Bagariari on 8 November 1946.#exploreworld #review #travel

ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਸਮਾਧਾਂ ਨਾਭਾ | Phulkian Dynasty

Shahi Samadhan Nabha
ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਸਮਾਧਾਂ ਨਾਭਾ
The Phulkian Dynasty
BRIEF HISTORY
The ruling house of Nabha enjoys a joint descent together with those of Patiala and Jhind, from Phul, through his son Tiloka. Hamir Singh, great-grandson of Tiloka, founded the city of Nabha in 1755. In 1763 he sided with the Sikh sardars in their fight with the Mughal Viceroy Zain Khan, and was confirmed in the possessions of all the territories he had freed from the Mughal power. He established almost complete independence, and succeeded in creating a state under the name of the city he founded.
Jaswant Singh, son of Hamir, succeeded in 1784 and assumed the title of Raja. He joined his Phulkian kinsmen and entered into treaty relations with the British, in opposition to the court at Lahore. He maintained cordial relations with the Emperor in Delhi and secured recognition of his father's conquests and high titles of honour. His younger son and successor, Raja Sri Devendra Singh, attempted to hedge his bets by remaining aloof during the Anglo-Sikh War. On securing their victory, the British charged him with intriueging with the enemy and abrogating his treaty responsibilities. Large tracts of territory were confiscated and the raja deposed in favour of his eldest surviving son.

Raja Bahrpur Singh, who succeeded as a minor, did not make the same mistake as his father. At the age of 17, he led his troops in support of the British during the Indian Mutiny, holding Ludhiana against the mutineers for a continuous period of six months. His courage and services were honoured with a guarantee of his possessions, high honours and titles, additional territory and a seat on the Viceroy's Council. Sadly, his early death in 1863 robbed the state of a promising reign. Raja Bhagwan Singh, his younger brother succeeded but also died young and without issue, eight years later.

The British appointed a commission of Phulkian rulers to look into choosing a successor to the vacant gadi. Their unanimous choice fell upon Hira Singh, the son Kunwar Sukha Singh, of Badrukhan, in Jind. Their choice proved a fortuitous one. His long and prosperous reign saw his little patchwork state transformed. Buildings and monuments sprang up everywhere, roads and railways constructed, and agriculture expanded. Gaining from the Sirhind irrigation canal, the state became a garden, producing wheat, millet, pulses, cotton and sugar. Land revenue receipts grew rapidly, and were ploughed back into improving agriculture, the infrastructure, schools and hospitals. A small but efficient army was created along modern lines, sent a contingent to the Second Afghan War in 1878 and with the Tirah expedition in 1897. The Raja lived long enough to attend all the Imperial Durbars, but increasingly left affairs of state in the hands of his promising son.
Maharaja Shri Ripudaman Singh succeeded his father in 1911 having already served under him as virtual administrator for some years. His abilities were noticed by the Imperial authorities, who appointed him to the Central Legislature. There he spoke on behalf of the Sikh interest, supported and pioneered reforming legislation to the benefit of his race and India. However, soon after his succession, relations with his larger and more powerful kinsman at Patiala deteriorated. Schemes and feuds abounded on both sides, sometimes resulting in dangerous and reckless actions. Unfortunately for Ripudaman, his state was small and insignificant in comparison to Patiala, who was also a British favourite.

Maharaja Shri Sir Pratap Singh succeeded as a minor in 1928. Removed from the influence of his father, he received a thoroughly modern Western education. His interests were more traditionally Sikh and he took an interest in military affairs, joined the army and served with distinction during the Second World War. He ended his service in the rank of a full Colonel, then embarked on resolving the issue of his state's accommodation with post-Independence India. Nabha joined with fellow Phulkian rulers in founding the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) in 1948. Although this proved to be a successful move and natural union, Congress India was in no mood to tolerate such a centre of power for very long. They dissolved the union in 1956 and merged the states with a greater Punjab. Nevertheless, the Maharaja continued to serve India in a military capacity, acting as ADC to the President and serving as Colonel of the Sikh Regiment for many years. He saw through the momentous changes wrought by Mrs Gandhi's policy of de-recognising the rulers in 1971, and died at the age of 76 in 1995. At his death, he was one of the last surviving knights of the old Order of the Star of India.

History of Malerkotla ::---Malerkotla, a Muslim majority state was established in 1454 A.D. by Sheikh Sadruddin-i-Jahan from Afghanistan, and was ruled by his Sherwani descendants. The State of Malerkotla was established in 1600 A.D. During the 1947 riots when Punjab was in flames, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence; through it all, it remained a lone island of peace.

The roots of communal harmony date back to 1705, when Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh 9 and 7 year old sons of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sirhind Wazir Khan. While his close relative, Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla, who was present in the court, lodged vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it was against the tenets of the Quran and Islam. Wazir Khan nevertheless had the Sahibzadas tortured and bricked into a section of wall while still alive. At this the Nawab of Malerkotla walked out of the court in protest. Guru Gobind Singh on learning of this kind and humanitarian approach had blessed the Nawab and the people of Malerkotla that the city will live in the peace and happiness . In recognition of this act, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition.

Hira Singh (18 December 1843 – 24 December 1911) was the Jat ruler of Nabha State, one of the Phulkian states in the Punjab.

Hira Singh was born at Badrukhan, Jind, on 18 December 1843 , the second son of Sukha Singh (died 1852), from a distant branch of the royal Sikh Phulkian dynasty of Patiala, Jind and Nabha. Little is known about his early life.

In 1871, the line of the Phulkian dynasty which had ruled Nabha, a small 11-gun state, since 1718 became extinct upon the death from tuberculosis of the young Raja, Bhagwan Singh (1842–1871). The remaining two lines of the dynasty-the rulers of Patiala and Jind-in conjunction with the British government fixed upon Hira Singh Gosal as the successor to the Nabha gadi (throne). Hira Singh ascended the throne of Nabha on 9 June 1871 and began a long and successful reign that would usher Nabha into the modern era. Great monuments and public buildings were erected, roads, railways, hospitals, schools and palaces were constructed and an efficient modern army was established that saw service during the Second Afghan War and the Tirah Expedition. As well, agriculture flourished with the construction of an irrigation canal at Sirhind, and Nabha soon produced bountiful harvests of wheat, sugar, pulses, millet and cotton, thus enabling the state to increase the value of its land revenue assessments.

As a result of Hira Singh's improvements, in 1877 Nabha was raised to a salute of 13-guns and Hira Singh himself was decorated with the Empress of India Gold Medal and knighted two years later with the GCSI.

In 1894, Hira Singh was granted the title of Raja-i-Rajagan and in 1898 was granted a 15-gun personal salute. He was appointed a GCIE in 1903 and the following year was made a Colonel of the 14th King George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs in the British Indian Army. Only a fortnight before his death, Hira Singh was raised to the rank of Maharaja of Nabha. Hira Singh died at the Hira Mahal on Christmas Eve 1911, aged 68 after a four-decade reign. He was succeeded by his only son, Ripudaman Singh Gosal.

History:--

The predecessor state was founded in 1454 A.D. by Sheikh Sadruddin-i-Jahan, a pious man of the Sherwani tribe of Afghanistan area, and was ruled by his descendants.

Local tradition says that Behlol Lodhi (1451–1517), the Afghan king who had most of western India under his control, desired to rule Delhi and on his way, he was caught in a sand drift. In the darkness the King spotted a dim light of a lamp still burning in the wind. It was the hut of Sheikh Sadruddin and when the king found out he came to the hut to show his respect and asked the holy man to pray for him to bear a son and have victory.During 1451 and 1452, the king married off his daughter Taj Murassa to Shaikh Sadruddin after being enthroned in Delhi, and also gave him the area of Malerkotla as a jagir.

The descendants of Shaikh Sadruddin branched into two groups. One started ruling the state and were given the title of Nawab when the Mughal Empire arose. The other branch lived around the Shrine of Shaikh Sadruddin, controlling its revenue from pilgrims.

The State of Malerkotla was established in 1657 by Bayazid Khan. After saving the life of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in a tiger attack, Bayazid Khan was granted the privilege to build a fort, which he named Malerkotla and eventually gave its name to the state. On 3 May 1809 Maler Kotla became a British protectorate and was made part of the Cis-Sutlej states until 1862. Malerkotla ranked 12th in the Punjab Darbar in 1890. During the 1947 riots when Punjab was in flames, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence; through it all, it remained a lone island of peace.

The roots of communal harmony in the area date back to 1705, when Sahibzada Fateh Singh and Sahibzada Zorawar Singh, 9- and 7-year-old sons of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, were ordered to be bricked alive by the governor of Sirhind, Wazir Khan. His close relative, Sher Mohammed Khan, Nawab of Malerkotla, who was present in the court, lodged a vehement protest against this inhuman act and said it was against Islam. Wazir Khan nevertheless had the Sahibzadas tortured and bricked into a section of wall while still alive. At this, the Nawab of Malerkotla walked out of the court in protest. Guru Gobind Singh on learning this kind and humanitarian approach profusely thanked the Nawab of Malerkotla and blessed him with his Hukamnama, Kirpan, etc. In recognition of this act, the State of Malerkotla did not witness a single incident of violence during partition. Many local people attribute this peaceful strain to the presence of the shrine of 'Baba Haidar Sheikh', the Sufi saint, who founded the town of Malerkotla more than 500 years ago.

Following Indian independence and the signing of the instrument of accession to the Indian Union in 1948, Maler Kotla joined the newly established state of Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) until its merger with Punjab in 1956.
