Dholavira (Gujarati: ધોળાવીરા) is an archaeological site at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, in the state of Gujarat in western India, which has taken its name from a modern-day village 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) south of it. This village is 165 km (103 mi) from Radhanpur. Also known locally as Kotada timba, the site contains ruins of a city of the ancient Indus Valley civilization.[1] Earthquakes have repeatedly affected Dholavira, including a particularly severe one around 2600 BC.[2]

Dholavira's location is on the Tropic of Cancer. It is one of the five largest Harappan sites[3] and the most prominent of archaeological sites in India belonging to the Indus Valley Civilization.[4] It is located on Khadir bet island in the Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary in the Great Rann of Kutch. The 47 ha (120 acres) quadrangular city lay between two seasonal streams, the Mansar in the north and Manhar in the south.[5] The site was thought to be occupied from c.2650 BCE, declining slowly after about 2100 BCE, and to have been briefly abandoned then reoccupied until c.1450 BCE;[6] however, recent research suggests the beginning of occupation around 3500 BCE (pre-Harappan) and continuity until around 1800 BCE (early part of Late Harappan period).[7]
The site was initially discovered by a resident of Dholavira village, Shambhudan Gadhvi, in early 1960s who made efforts to bring government attention to the location.[8][9][10] The site was officially discovered in 1967-68 by J. P. Joshi, of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and is the fifth largest of eight major Harappan sites. It has been under excavation since 1990 by the ASI, which opined that Dholavira has indeed added new dimensions to personality of Indus Valley Civilisation.[11] The other major Harappan sites discovered so far are Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Ganeriwala, Rakhigarhi, Kalibangan, Rupnagar and Lothal.
It was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Dholavira: a Harappan City on 27 July 2021
Heaven Road is the newest scenic road in India. This road is about 30 kilometers long and connects Khavda to Dholavira. We traveled on this road to visit Dholavira, which is known as the largest Harappan site of the Indus Valley Civilization site in India and the second largest after Harappa in Pakistan. In 2021, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This road is not fully paved yet, but it is already on the bucket list of many travel enthusiasts like myself. The road passes through the Lake of Kutch and offers beautiful vistas, blue water, white crystal beds, blue skies, and more. You can find plenty of bird sightings which include pink flamingos.
Dholavira is an ancient city located on the island of Khadir in the state of Gujarat, India. It was occupied between around 3000-1500 BCE and was a part of the Harappan Civilization. The city is known for its well-preserved remains, including a fortified castle, ceremonial grounds, and a cemetery. It also had a sophisticated water management system and was a center of trade, with evidence of trade with other cities in the Harappan Civilization as well as with cities in Mesopotamia and the Oman peninsula. Artifacts such as beads, copper, shell, stone, and gold have been found at the site, demonstrating the culture’s technological and artistic achievements. The city is considered an important example of the culture’s ingenuity in adapting to a harsh environment.

मांडवी शहर से कुछ ही दूरी पर स्थित मांडवी बीच गुजरात के सभी प्रसिद्ध बीचों में से एक है, जो अपने शांत वातावरण के लिए काफी मशहूर है। अगर आप अपने कच्छ ट्रिप के टूर प्लान में से कुछ समय शांत वातावरण में बिताना चाहते हैं, तो आप मांडवी बीच जा सकते हैं। मांडवी बीच के बाद आप चाहें तो विजय विलास पैलेस को को देखने भी जा सकते हैं, जो इस बीच से कुछ ही दूरी पर मांडवी शहर में स्थित है।
4]. नारायण सरोवर – Narayan Sarovar
नारायण सरोवर को विष्णु सरोवर भी कहा जाता है, जो भारत के 5 सबसे प्रसिद्ध एवं पवित्र सरोवर में से एक है। इस सरोवर में कुछ दूर जाने का रास्ता बनाया गया है, जहां से दिखने वाले इस सरोवर के नजारे को भुला नहीं जा सकता है। इस सरोवर के किनारे ही नारायण मंदिर भी स्थित है, जिसमें जाकर आप भगवान विष्णु के दर्शन कर सकते हैं। इस सरोवर से कुछ ही दूरी पर स्थित आप कोटेश्वर महादेव मंदिर में जाकर भोलेनाथ की दर्शन कर सकते हैं।
5]. जंगली गधा अभ्यारण्य (घुड़खर अभ्यारण्य) Wild Ass Sanctuary
4953 वर्ग किमी. के क्षेत्र में फैले हुए इस अभ्यारण्य को जंगली गधा, जिसे घुड़खर भी कहा जाता है, के लिए सन् स्थापित ई० में किया गया था, लेकिन वर्तमान समय में इस अभ्यारण्य में चिंकारा और नीलगाय को भी देखा जा सकता है। 4953 वर्ग किमी. क्षेत्र वाला यह अभ्यारण्य भारत का सबसे बड़ा अभ्यारण्य है। यहां पर आपको घुड़खर यानी जंगली गधा काफी संख्या में देखने को मिल जाएंगे।
6]. श्री भद्रेश्वर जैन मंदिर – Shri Bhadreshwar Jain Temple
गुजरात का श्री भद्रेश्वर जैन मंदिर भारत के सबसे प्रसिद्ध एवं पुराने जैन मंदिरों में से एक है, जिसकी वास्तुकला और नक्काशी सराहनीय है। इस मंदिर में संगमरमर के पत्थर से निर्मित एक मुख्य मंदिर भी मौजूद है। श्री भद्रेश्वर जैन मंदिर के परिसर में आपको कई सारे मंदिर देखने को मिलेंगे, लेकिन इन मंदिरों में से आपको कुछ ऐसे भी मंदिर देखने को मिलेंगे, जिसके ऊपर भी छोटे-छोटे मंदिर बनाए गए हैं।
7]. विजय विलास पैलेस – Vijay Vilas Palace
विजय विलास पैलेस एक तरह का रजवाड़ी महल है, जो गुजरात के मांडवी शहर में स्थित है और इस महल का निर्माण निर्माण राजा विजय राज के द्वारा सन् 1929 ई० में किया गया था। इस महल की रंगीन कांच, गुम्बद और खंभों पर की गईं नक्काशियां पर्यटकों को काफी पसंद आता है।
8]. रण उत्सव Rann Utsav
यूं तो गुजरात ऐसा राज्य है जहां घूमने के लिए कई सारी जगह है लेकिन कच्छ एक ऐसा स्थान है जो रण उत्सव के दौरान सबसे कलरफुल और एग्जॉटिक हो जाता है। रण उत्सव हर साल अक्टूबर से फरवरी/मार्च के बीच ढोर्डो में होता है। इस सालाना उत्सव में टूरिस्ट्स टेंट में रुक सकते हैं जिसमें तमाम तरह की फसिलटीज होती हैं। इसे बाकायदा 'टेंट सिटी' कहा जाता है। इस दौरान कच्छ के रण यानी दुनिया के सबसे बड़े नमक के रेगिस्तान में पहुंचकर सूर्योदय और सूर्यास्त देखना अद्भुत होता है।

धोलावीरा भारत के गुजरात राज्य के कच्छ ज़िले की भचाऊ तालुका में स्थित एक पुरातत्व स्थल है। इसका नाम यहाँ से एक किमी दक्षिण में स्थित ग्राम पर पड़ा है, जो राधनपुर से 165 किमी दूर स्थित है। धोलावीरा में सिन्धु घाटी सभ्यता के अवशेष और खण्डहर मिलते हैं और यह उस सभ्यता के सबसे बड़े ज्ञात नगरों में से एक था। इस पुरातत्व स्थल को धोलावीरा गांव के निवासी शंभूदान गढ़वी ने 1960 के दशक के प्रारम्भ में खोजा था, जिन्होंने इस स्थान पर सरकार का ध्यान आकर्षित करने के लिए वर्षों तक प्रयास किये।भौगोलिक रूप से यह कच्छ के रण पर विस्तारित कच्छ मरुभूमि वन्य अभयारण्य के भीतर खादिरबेट द्वीप पर स्थित है। यह नगर 47 हेक्टर (120 एकड़) के चतुर्भुजीय क्षेत्रफल पर फैला हुआ था। बस्ती से उत्तर में मनसर जलधारा और दक्षिण में मनहर जलधारा है, जो दोनों वर्ष के कुछ महीनों में ही बहती हैं। यहाँ पर आबादी लगभग 2650 ईसापूर्व में आरम्भ हुई और 2100 ईपू के बाद कम होने लगी। कुछ काल इसमें कोई नहीं रहा लेकिन फिर 1450 ईपू से फिर यहाँ लोग बस गए। नए अनुसंधान से संकेत मिलें हैं कि यहाँ अनुमान से भी पहले, 3500 ईपू से लोग बसना आरम्भ हो गए थे और फिर लगातार 1800 ईपू तक आबादी बनी रही।धोलावीरा पांच हजार साल पहले विश्व के सबसे व्यस्त महानगर में गिना जाता था था। इस हड़प्पा कालीन शहर धोलावीरा को यूनेस्को की विश्व धरोहर सूची में (2021 चीन में संपन्न यूनेस्को की ऑनलाइन बैठक में) शामिल किया गया है। यह भारत का 40वां विश्व धरोहर स्थल है(march 2022 तक कोई नयी साईट नही खोजी गई है यह सिंधु सभ्यता का सबसे बड़ा स्थल था..

Dholavira is an archaeological site at Khadirbet in Bhachau Taluka of Kutch District, in the state of Gujarat in western India.
The site contains ruins of a city of the ancient Indus Valley civilization and Also known locally as Kotada timba
The site was initially discovered by a resident of Dholavira village, Shambhudan Gadhvi, in early 1960s who made efforts to bring government attention to the location and then was officially discovered in 1967-68 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)
And then it was named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Dholavira: a Harappan City on 27 July 2021.

By Air : Dholavira is 250 km from Bhuj Airport and is reached via Bhachau and Rapar
By Train : The closest railway station to Dholavira is Samakhiali, just 137 kms away. Major railway stations nearby are Bhachau, Gandhidham and Anjar, which are 152, 187 and 191 Kms away respectively.
What is Dholavira famous for?
Dholavira site is India's most prominent archaeological site associated with the Indus Valley Civilization. The site is the larger of the two most remarkable excavations of the Harappan Civilization dating back to about 4,500 years ago. Dholavira is also very famous for its water management system which allowed it to proper amidst an arid stretch.
Best time to visit Dholavira?
However, the best time to visit Dholavira is during winter from the month of October till March.
Monsoon is also good time for those who are planning their trip to Dholavira but summers are excessively hot and climate is unbearable for tourists.
