10 Best place to visit in Bernay France

Ten things to do in north-western France before you die

Hello, we’re two weeks into the honeymoon season (  of The Earful Tower and my wife and I are currently in the small village of Plédran in Brittany.

We’ve driven 800 kilometres on the scooter and we’ve seen more than we can remember. Since the last episode ( , we've stayed near Deauville, on Normandy farms, and near D-Day beaches, before passing through the top half of Brittany.

Now that our time in the north west is coming to an end, here's our list of the ten things you absolutely must do before you die.

Press play below to hear the 30-minute podcast episode and scroll down for the list. Subscribe to the podcast on Apple here ( and Google here ( .

 1. Walk the top of the old city walls in Saint Malo at sunset

It's really as magical as it sounds, the old fortified walls will leave you gobsmacked. Prepare for wind!

2. See the tapestry of Bayeux

We'd heard about this museum, but nothing compares to walking along the 70m tapestry and taking it in yourself. Be sure to check out the local cathedral too, well worth a visit!

3. Walk through the old town of Bernay

Ever heard of Bernay? Neither had we. But it's absolutely a hidden gem of the north west - stop there on the way to Deauville, perhaps?

4. Explore the pink granite rocks at Ploumanac'h

Not only is this place one of the prettiest villages in the country (it won an award for it in recent years), but the seaside is mesmerising.

5. Try local delicacies such as cider, galettes, crepes, and Kouign-amann

Avoid your typical restaurant choices at all costs - go with the flow. Even if you can't pronounce it. Ten points if you can pronounce Koign-amann. I still can't.

6. Check out the Mont Saint Michel at low tide

Write a message in the sand and see it from the monastery above!

7. Visit the charming village of Dinan

Another pearl in Brittany, be sure to add it to your itinerary. Why not have a cider by the water while you're there?

8. Find a museum along the D-Day Beaches

We went to the Juno Beach centre, which was a good one, but there are plenty more to choose from.

9. Stay in a farm-house with a French family

We found a few via Airbnb and they were excellent. I suppose you never know what you're going to get, but a good French family will take you in and treat you like their own. Good luck!

10. Take the back roads and find the small villages

Can't stress this one enough - get off the highways and you'll be amazed at what you find!

That's it for now. If you wanna see all the bonus footage and support this show at the same time then sign up on Patreon ( today and unlock it all.

See you on the other side, I hope!

Tours maisons à colombages france

In the 6th century Gregory of Tours, author of the Ten Books of History, made his mark on the town by restoring the cathedral destroyed by a fire in 561. Saint Martin's monastery benefited from its inception, at the very start of the 6th century from patronage and support from the Frankish king, Clovis, which increased considerably the influence of the saint, the abbey and the city in Gaul. In the 9th century, Tours was at the heart of the Carolingian Rebirth, in particular because of Alcuin abbot of Marmoutier.

In 732 AD, Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi and a large army of Muslim horsemen from Al-Andalus advanced 500 kilometres (311 miles) deep into France, and were stopped at Tours by Charles Martel and his infantry igniting the Battle of Tours. The outcome was defeat for the Muslims, preventing France from Islamic conquest. In 845, Tours repulsed the first attack of the Viking chief Hasting (Haesten). In 850, the Vikings settled at the mouths of the Seine and the Loire. Still led by Hasting, they went up the Loire again in 852 and sacked Angers, Tours and the abbey of Marmoutier.

During the Middle Ages, Tours consisted of two juxtaposed and competing centres. The City in the east, successor of the late Roman 'castrum', was composed of the archiepiscopal establishment (the cathedral and palace of the archbishops) and of the castle of Tours, seat of the authority of the Counts of Tours (later Counts of Anjou) and of the King of France. In the west, the new city structured around the Abbey of Saint Martin was freed from the control of the City during the 10th century (an enclosure was built towards 918) and became Châteauneuf. This space, organized between Saint Martin and the Loire, became the economic centre of Tours. Between these two centres remained Varennes, vineyards and fields, little occupied except for the Abbaye Saint-Julien established on the banks of the Loire. The two centres were linked during the 14th century. Tours is a good example of a medieval double city.

Place Plumereau, Medieval buildings
Tours became the capital of the county of Tours or Touraine, territory bitterly disputed between the counts of Blois and Anjou – the latter were victorious in the 11th century. It was the capital of France at the time of Louis XI, who had settled in the castle of Montils (today the castle of Plessis in La Riche, western suburbs of Tours), Tours and Touraine remained until the 16th century a permanent residence of the kings and court. The rebirth gave Tours and Touraine many private mansions and castles, joined together to some extent under the generic name of the Châteaux of the Loire. It is also at the time of Louis XI that the silk industry was introduced – despite difficulties, the industry still survives to this day.

What I’ve learned about the French countryside

Hello, we’re one week into the honeymoon season ( of The Earful Tower and my wife and I are currently in the small coastal village of Courcelles-sur-Mer in Normandy.

We’ve driven 400 kilometres on the scooter and we’ve seen a lot, staying in Chantilly, Pacy-sur-Eure, Bernay, and Saint Hymer before arriving on these northern beaches.

Here’s what we’ve learned so far about the French countryside and the French people living there (compared to Paris and the Parisians we’ve lived among for the past few years).

1. People are friendly

In fact, they’re very friendly. They’ve been going out of their way to be helpful too. Anyone who says that French people are all rude have clearly never travelled in the French countryside. We've literally had someone running after us in the street to correct their travel directions.

2. Waiters are slow, but they care

Parisian waiters are excellent and attentive. They get you in and out before you even know what’s happened. But it's not so in the countryside, where they take their time and help you pick what they consider to be the best food for you.

3. People aren’t obsessed with how they look

People in Paris wouldn’t be seen dead in their sports clothes outside the gym. They’re slim, chic, and always on trend. But it's not like that in the countryside. People don’t tend to put on airs, they’re simply themselves - and it’s sometimes quite refreshing.

4. There are many hidden gems

It’s amazing how many villages that are just a name on the map turn out to be outstandingly beautiful spots. Case in point: Bernay in Normandy. If you’re a Patreon supporter, go and watch our live walk ( through Bernay - it’s like a fairytale setting.

5. There’s actually a lot of info in English

In Paris, you’d be lucky to find a tourist sign that’s translated in English, at least one with any interesting information. But not so in many countryside spots. Even small villages (like Bernay, for example) sometimes have translations for us English-speaking tourists about the history of buildings and so on.

6. There’s a list of the most beautiful villages

Here the link to find the prettiest French villages, officially ( . Good to bookmark this page if you’re travelling too :) We checked out La Roche Guyon and it was fantastic (did a live Patreon walk there too!).

7. Things can be very pricey

Nine euros for ice cream in Chantilly, 20 euros for a cocktail in Deauville… it’s not just Paris that’s expensive in France. Beware: Touristy traps come with the price tag. But don't worry, everything else is pretty cheap.

8. People have more time for you

There’s simply a slower pace in the French countryside. We’ve ended up in conversations in bakeries and pharmacies with the other customers - something that rarely happens in Paris - if ever. And it’s been happening a lot.

9. People are proud of their villages

It’s very easy to see that French villagers love their villages. There are colourful flower displays on every corner, often no graffiti at all, and everything is exceptionally clean. People are proud of their homes - and it’s not always the same vibe in the French capital.

10. People don’t switch to English (even if they can)

In Paris, you may have tried to speak French with a waiter only to hear them respond in English. It can be frustrating at best. But in the countryside, people are very encouraging and patient, and happy to help you along with your French - even if it’s not perfect.

That’s it for now - we’ve got a lot more road to travel.

Beuvron-en-Auge, Honfleur, and Going Home (ode to Paris)

I promised this video a long time ago. And I have sat on it, stewing over the content. Originally almost an hour-long, I hardly ever create this much imagery in a single location. In fact, I had travel plans to continue along the Normandy coastline for another two days, at least. But when I landed in Honfleur, I was breathless, restive. I called my husband overwhelmed, almost nauseous, claiming I was going to be sick right there on the spot. Because she was so utterly perfect.

I knew this could happen. I worked so hard to find, discover, learn, and earn my corner of Bretagne. But there was always that FOMO niggling little bug in the back of my mind, asking, But, what if? And here she was, a new contender in the game. You see, for me, I love cool, cold, grey, moody weather. I love expansive white beaches, fresh seafood, no bugs, no heat, just fresh, crisp air in a romantic iconic French setting.

Honfleur gobsmacked me. I followed a small two-lane road down from the valley ridge into town, and the main street led directly to the historic port. My jaw dropped as I took in the living painting in front of me. I couldn't find my parking spot fast enough. After checking into my flat, I immediately ran back out with the girls. The port, the streets, the ships, the light, the Versailles-esque park that was dog-friendly and led out to the pristine beach next to where the river Seine dumps into the English bay (take a deep breath). IS THIS REAL?? I was so in love I was sick, physically.

The following day, the girls asked to go outside early. I quickly threw on my shoes and stepped out the exterior door... and straight into the Saturday marché. Is this real? I asked myself for the umpteenth time since I arrived.

In the end, I admit I am pining after Honfleur, romanticizing her in my mind. But truly, at the end of the day, there is nothing like home (as Dorothy would say). And she is my golden girl: PARIS.

With all my love,
