Cowra and Darbys Falls Getaway: Top Attractions, Historic Sites and Glamping in Central Western NSW

Join us on an unforgettable 4-day adventure in Cowra and Darbys Falls, located in the heart of Central Western NSW. In this video, we explore the region's top attractions, delve into its rich history, and enjoy a unique glamping experience on a farm surrounded by sheep and horses. Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, this trip has something for everyone.

Day 1: Scenic Views and Serene Gardens

Our journey begins at Elliotts Lookout near Wyangala, where we are greeted with breathtaking panoramic views of the Wyangala Dam and the surrounding landscape. This lookout is a perfect spot to start our adventure and take in the natural beauty of the area.

Next, we head to Wyangala Dam, a major water storage facility that offers stunning vistas and a range of recreational activities.

In the afternoon, we visit the Cowra Japanese Garden, a beautifully landscaped garden that symbolizes peace and reconciliation. Designed by renowned landscape architect Ken Nakajima, the garden features traditional Japanese elements, including koi ponds, bonsai trees, and serene walking paths. It's a tranquil place to reflect and unwind.

Day 2: History and Heritage

Our second day begins at the Lachlan Valley Railway Heritage Centre, where we step back in time to explore the rich railway history of the region. The centre houses a collection of historic locomotives, carriages, and memorabilia, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.

We then visit the Cowra Peace Bell, a symbol of world peace and harmony. The bell, one of only a few in the world, was presented to Cowra by the World Peace Bell Association in recognition of the town's commitment to peace.

Our next stop is Bellevue Hill Lookout, where we enjoy sweeping views of Cowra and the surrounding countryside. It's a great spot for photography and taking in the vastness of the landscape.

We continue our historical journey with a visit to the Garrison Gates, remnants of the World War II-era Cowra Military Camp. The gates stand as a reminder of the town's significant role during the war.

A visit to the Prisoner of War Camp is next on our itinerary. This historic site is where the famous Cowra Breakout occurred in 1944, when Japanese prisoners of war staged a mass escape. The camp now features informative displays and memorials that provide insight into this dramatic event.

We round off the day with a visit to the Cowra Railway Station and take a tourist train ride. The station, with its well-preserved architecture, takes us back to the golden age of rail travel.

Finally, we relax at Faileigh Beach, a beautiful spot along the Lachlan River. It's an ideal place to unwind, enjoy a picnic, and take in the peaceful river views.

Day 3: Nature and Adventure

Day three takes us to Conimbla National Park, a haven for nature enthusiasts. We embark on the Ironbark Walking Track, which leads us to the scenic Cherry Creek Lookout. The walk is filled with native flora and fauna, making it a delightful experience for nature lovers.

We then explore the Wallaby Walking Track, which takes us to the Wallaby Picnic Area. This track offers more opportunities to immerse ourselves in the park's natural beauty and encounter local wildlife.

In the afternoon, we visit Wyangala Holiday Park, a popular destination for outdoor activities. The park offers a range of facilities, including camping, fishing, and boating, making it a perfect spot for adventure and relaxation.

Glamping Experience in Darbys Falls

When we weren't exploring, we spent our time glamping in Darbys Falls. This unique experience allowed us to unwind in a spacious tent set on a beautiful farm. The farm was home to friendly sheep and horses, adding to the charm of our stay.

Our glamping setup included all the comforts of home, such as a cozy bed, cooking facilities, and a private outdoor area where we could relax and enjoy the stunning countryside views. We spent our evenings cooking delicious meals, playing board games, and chatting around the campfire. The clear, star-filled skies provided a perfect backdrop for stargazing, making our stay even more memorable.

Double Bay is a ritzy harbourside suburb. Its upscale boutiques, beauty salons and restaurants cater to well-to-do shoppers and diners, while trendy coffee spots and cocktail bars attract a young, hip crowd. Popular Redleaf Beach draws sunbathers and swimmers to Murray Rose Pool, a large tidal enclosure. The beach's walkable jetty has sweeping views across the water to Darling Point and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

In the early 19th century, Irish-Australian immigrants referred to the area as Vinegar Hill, after the Battle of Vinegar Hill, an engagement during the 1798 uprising of the United Irishmen in south-east Ireland. Governor Lachlan Macquarie took great exception to this and decided to name the suburb Bellevue Hill, the belle vue meaning beautiful view.
Later in that century, Bellevue Hill became the home of the Fairfax family, who lived at Trahlee, in Ginahgulla Road, which was leased by James Fairfax from 1866 to 1878. They then moved to Ginahgulla (now known as Fairfax House and owned by The Scots College) in the same road. The Fairfax family were responsible for establishing the Fairfax Media empire, which became a major force in the Australian news media (see also John Fairfax).

Not only is the location and craftsmanship of this home in a league of its own, but the privacy it offers is unlike anything else around. And that why…

Having the chance to explore more of Victoria has been an exciting journey. As someone who is familiar with all the incredible places that NSW has to offer I was happy to see that Victoria has more to offer than just the waveless beaches and dense urban development. It’s not fair to compare other states to NSW so instead of complaining about what it doesn’t have, I’ll just be grateful for all of the beautiful things it does have.
