Irvine is an ancient settlement, in medieval times a royal burgh, and now a new town on the coast of the Firth of Clyde in North Ayrshire, Scotland. Irvine was the site of Scotland's 12th century Military Capital and former headquarters of the Lord High Constable of Scotland, Hugh de Morville.
Irvine was once a haunt of Robert Burns, after whom two streets in the town are named: Burns Street and Burns Crescent. He is known to have worked in a flax mill on the Glasgow Vennel. Despite being classed as a new town, Irvine has had a long history stretching back many centuries and was classed as a Royal Burgh. There are also conflicting rumours that Mary, Queen of Scots stayed briefly at Seagate Castle. To this day there is still a yearly festival, called Marymass, held in the town.
Irvine is the birthplace of the present First Minister of Scotland and leader of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon as well as the former First Minister of Scotland, Jack McConnell. The current Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop was also born in Irvine. Its twin town is Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in northern France just outside Lille.
Irvine is situated in low lying Ayrshire overlooking Irvine Bay on the Firth of Clyde. It is a coastal town and lies approximately 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Glasgow. Most of the land in and around Irvine is very flat. Two rivers flow through the area, one being the River Irvine and the other being the Annick Water. The Annick Water is very popular for fishing. The area experiences relatively cool, wet summers and cold, wet winters, although snow in the area is not uncommon.
Irvine is well served with numerous transport links. A railway station, originally built by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company, is situated at the west end of the town which is on the main line between Stranraer and Glasgow. Irvine is also well served by several arterial roads, namely the A78 (Greenock to Prestwick), A71 (Irvine to Kilmarnock and beyond to Edinburgh), A737 (through the Garnock Valley to Glasgow via the M8) and the A736 to Glasgow

Clan Kennedy Castle On Visit To Ayrshire Scotland
As requested by a subscriber, Tour Scotland travel video of Culzean Castle, a Scottish castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde, near Maybole, Carrick, with Scottish music, on visit to the Ayrshire coast. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy. Culzean Castle was constructed as an L-plan castle by order of the 10th Earl of Cassilis. He instructed the architect Robert Adam to rebuild a previous, but more basic, structure into a fine country house to be the seat of his earldom. The castle was built in stages between 1777 and 1792.Dwight D. Eisenhower first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States.
The surname Kennedy was first found in Ayrshire, Gaelic: Siorrachd Inbhir Àir, formerly a county in the southwestern Strathclyde region of Scotland, that today makes up the Council Areas of South, East, and North Ayrshire, where the earliest record of them dates from 1185, during the reign of King William the Lion, when a Henry Kennedy was reported to have been involved in a rebellion in Galloway but died in battle. The Kennedys derived from a branch of Celtic Earls of Galloway, not to be confused with Galway, which is in Ireland. Their power and influence in that region was great. In fact, there is a rhyme handed down through clansmen and bards from the year 1300 which runs as follows: Twixt Wigtown and the town of Ayr, Portpatrick and the Cruives of Cree. No man need think to bide there, unless he court with Kennedy.

It is alleged that the infamous graverobbers Burke and Hare sourced some of their cadavers from local cemetery, to supply to the Scottish surgeon Robert Knox for dissection. When the actual name of Cowdenbeath came into being is not known, but it is thought to have originated when turnpike roads were first made and that it marked the spot of an inn and later of a tollhouse erected in the 17th century. Cowdenbeath first came into prominence around 1820 as a stop on the north bound coaching route to Perth, Perthshire.
The surname Beath was first found in Fife, at the Hill of Beath, a hill and a village in Fife, Scotland just outside Dunfermline and joined to Cowdenbeath. The village is best known as the location of the meeting of the Covenanters at which John Blackadder was one of the preachers in the summer of 1670. As of 1896, it had a population of about 1,300 people. Beath has been spelled Beath, Beeth, Beith, Bait, Baith and others. Robert Beath, aged 25, arrived in South Australia in 1852 aboard the ship Medina; Andrew Beath, born 1829, aged 45, was a Scottish agricultural labourer, from Fife who travelled from Glasgow aboard the ship Oamaru arriving in Port Chalmers, Dunedin, Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 17th February 1875; William Beath landed in Virginia, America, in 1713; Adam Beath landed in Charlestown, Massachusetts, America, in 1716; Walter Beath arrived in New England, America, in 1718; Robert Beath settled in Charleston, South Carolina, America, in 1766; Henry and Robert Beath arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, America, in 1830.

Old Church With Music On History Visit To Tullibody Clackmannanshire Scotland

The old Parish Church of St Mungo dates from the 16th century. Reputedly one of the oldest villages in Scotland, and St. Mungo is said to have preached here. It has also been conjectured that Kenneth McAlpin, King of the Scots defeated the Picts at Baingle Brae and a stone there is reputed to mark the battlefield. Kentigern known as Saint Mungo was born around 518 at Culross in Fife and brought up by St Serf at the monastery there. By 543 he had began missionary work at Cathures on the Clyde, the site of modern Glasgow. The Christian King of Strathclyde, Roderick Hael, welcomed Mungo and procured his consecration as bishop, which took place about 540. For thirteen years he preached in the area, living an austere life. A large community grew up around him and ultimately it became known as Glasgow. About 553 Mungo travelled to Wales, where he visited St David and founded St Asaph's Monastery before returning to Glasgow about 581. He died around 603 and is reputedly buried on the spot where Glasgow Cathedral now stands. After catching the ferry back to Ardrossan I start to make the leisurely drive back homewards. On the way though I'm distracted by an intense desire to take a much more scenic route! So I divert and head off exploring another area that's been on my To Do for some time.
Loch Doon in Carrick, Ayrshire is a bit of wild camp hotspot with lots to offer outdoors lovers -
It also has an intriguing history too which I explain a little about.
This was just a cheeky little detour but it's amazing what you can fit in and find out in just a few hours.

I’ll share new places, hints, tips, any info I discover and whatever else I think you might find useful.
I began vlogging my solo travels in ‘Vanya’, to help me re-engage with life following the sudden, tragic loss of my husband nearly 3 years ago now. Working through a very complex grief has been the hardest & loneliest challenge imaginable. Some days it still knocks me completely sideways and probably always will. I really don't know. All I do know is that life can change forever and irreversibly in an instant.
By returning to the vanlife we had enjoyed so much together & embracing a new found love of video creation and vlogging, I’m continuing to build strength and balance to move forward through this completely unforeseen and unwanted next chapter of life.

Brian Fahey, born 25 April 1919, died 4 April 2007, a British musical director and arranger, best known for composing At the Sign of the Swingin' Cymbal, Alan Freeman's signature tune to his BBC Radio 1 programme Pick of the Pops, lived in Skelmorlie until his death in 2007

Old Photographs Of Portencross North Ayrshire Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Portencross, Scottish Gaelic: Port na Crois, a hamlet near Farland Head in North Ayrshire. The Portencross Pier was built in the era of Clyde steamer cruising but was never used as much as other locations such as Largs, Fairlie or Wemyss Bay. Portencross Castle has been fortified since the 13th Century. The present building is thought to date from the 14th Century and later, when the castle was moved from the nearby Auld Hill to its present site overlooking the harbour. The castle is believed to be the last mainland resting place for many former Scottish kings. Between the times of Cináed mac Ailpín, 810 to 858, through to the reign of Máel Coluim mac Donnchada, 1030 to 1093, the bodies of former kings were taken by road from the east of Scotland, and from Portencross they were ferried to Iona where they would be buried. The castle was rebuilt in the 14th century, not on Auld Hill, but instead on a rock promontory at the bottom of the hill, overlooking the Firth of Clyde. From this location, King Robert II signed several more Royal Charters, and the castle remained occupied until the roof was blown off during a violent storm in 1739. The castle walls still remain in place today, and the building has recently been opened to the public, with visitors able to access a ground floor room, the main hall, and the roof.
Glasgow COP26 Unofficial Alternative Cycle Route to City Centre on NCN7
During COP26 the cycle routes along NCN7, NCN75 and NCN756 are partially closed with alternative routes in place.
I have found a slightly different way to go that avoids the steep incline up through Yorkhill and shaves a little bit off the distance.
Some cyclists may not be aware of this route so hopefully this will benefit some.
The route passes through Partick, Yorkhill and Finnieston and ends at the COP26 International Climate Summit at the SEC in Glasgow.
