FORT DELGRÈS - BASSE-TERRE - GUADELOUPE
Fort Delgrès - Basse-Terre - Guadeloupe
Coordonnées GPS: 15°59'19.1N 61°43'22.9W
Ce fort français fut d'abord la résidence de Charles Houël, gouverneur de la Guadeloupe, et porta le nom de Fort Saint-Charles. Il fut ensuite renommé Fort Royal durant la guerre de Sept Ans, puis Fort Delgrès en 1989 en l'honneur de Louis Delgrès qui a milité pour l'abolition de l'esclavage et qui est mort en héros.
Durant cette visite, il est possible de découvrir entre autres certains vestiges du passé tels que la caserne, la poudrière, le cimetière militaire des officiers ainsi que la prison et le cachot.
A voir également: le mémorial Louis Delgrès, une oeuvre magnifique réalisée par Roger Arékian. Ce mémorial a été érigé 200 ans après la rébellion du pays contre la réhabilitation de l'esclavage, rébellion durant laquelle Louis Delgrès et 300 de ses hommes, se sentant perdus, se sont enlevés la vie à l'explosif en vertu de la devise Vivre libre ou mourir.
La visite du fort est libre et gratuite. Les lieux sont bien entretenus et paisibles (du moins durant notre visite). De plus, le site offre une splendide vue sur la mer, les montagnes et la ville de Basse-Terre.

Je me suis promis d'y revenir car on était juste de passage et la pluie s'est mise de la partie. Il y a temps à visiter, voici donc un petit avant-goût.

Atlantis Submarines offers exactly that experience. This 48-passenger vessel dives 30 meters, and through the large windows, visitors can see tropical fish, underwater canyons, and even shipwrecks. To get the best view of the Seven Mile Beach, George Town, and the North Sound, look no further than the Camana Bay Observation Tower. Standing at 75 feet and decorated with three million Venetian glass tiles, the tower boasts a 360-degree panorama of the island. After seeing the sights, visitors can descend the double helix stairs and out into 500 acres of gardens, boardwalks, and shops that line the streets.

There are 33 different beaches to explore on this small island in the west Caribbean, and each is as beautiful as the next. Renting a sailboat for the day is a great way to visit the beaches and enjoy a relaxing day in the clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. Can't get to a boat but still want to explore the beaches? Rent a kayak and paddle over to Little Bay. While you're there, you should consider having a picnic; it's a small beach, hence the name, but the bay is one of the most remote, providing visitors with an almost private beach for the time they're there. The most diverse and complete island of the Caribbean MUST be Guadeloupe. It's actually a dozen islands, with amazing beaches, tropical rainforest, rare birds and animals, history, culture and great food. Guadeloupe is especially popular with cruise passengers and French tourists, but it's actually a great destination for both Europeans and Americans. Flying to the capital Pointe-á-Pitre is not very expensive from Paris, LA, London or Amsterdam. So what is there to do?
We stay at Grande-Terre in Le Gosier, where the best beaches are and the sun is shining most of the times. We rented a car to visit the other part of Guadeloupe called Basse-Terre. The second of the two main islands has volcanoes, lakes and lush rainforest to explore. There we see the three waterfalls called Chutes du Carbet in the National Park of Guadeloupe. We visit a small island just off the coast, see lots of animals and also visit the far east. On a road trip we stop at the most incredible beach: La Caravelle, near Saint-Anne. In Pointe des Châteaux we see the extreme differences. In a dry rocky area we see pink lakes, high cliffs and a famous cross statue.
Previously you saw us on Antigua, where we explored the most amazing beaches and cultural places. This bizarre nature paradise has green hills popping up everywhere between the blue ocean and ultra white beaches. We drove our 4x4 car all around, in one of the smallest countries in the world. Antigua is part of the country Antigua and Barbuda archipelago. Before this, you also saw us on Saint Martin, with trips to Anguilla and Saint Barth.
The entire trip started already months ago in the Dominican Republic. We hopped over to Puerto Rico and after this episode we visit Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Grenada, Tobago and the Bahamas. Follow us on this Caribbean tour, now on Guadeloupe and then many other beautiful destinations in the Caribbean Sea. French Caribbean Hidden Caves & Natural Salt Pools | Anse Bertrand | Guadeloupe Travel
The northeast region of Guadeloupe is spectacular and soooo much different than the mountainous region of Basse-Terre. This was an action-packed day where we were chasing the tide trying to beat it before the low tide came. We walked around this trail to Anse Belle Rose- Le souffleur. When it is low tide you can climb down and these caves have natural salt water pools in them. What an amazing site to see!
