About Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop--

Jamalpur Locomotive Workshop was established on 8 February 1862 as the 1st fully-fledged railway workshop facility in India. It was started by East Indian Railway Company (EIR) as a result of so-called Railway Age in India, which began in 1854.

A locomotive, carriage & wagon workshop had been set up in Howrah to put into commission imported rolling stock for EIR & also to carry out repairs. Unfortunately this workshop was unsuccessful, partly because of problems with procuring supplies & sourcing enough skilled labour. Within 8 years of its establishment in Howrah, workshop was closed & Jamalpur Workshop was established at Jamalpur.

History--
Jamalpur Workshop enjoys the distinction of being the largest and the oldest locomotive repair workshop with the most diversified manufacturing activities in Indian Railways. At first, Jamalpur shops were merely repairing locomotives & also assembling locomotives from parts salvaged from other or damaged locomotives. By the turn of 20th century they had progressed to producing their own locomotives. In year 1899, CA 764 Lady Curzon was produced by the Jamalpur Workshop.  In 1893, the first railway foundry in India was set up at Jamalpur Workshop. It also had a boiler workshop for repairing & building boilers. A 5MVA captive power plant was also developed in Jamalpur Workshop. In 1870 it was equipped with a rolling mill of its own; unfortunately it’s not working at present.

The school attached to the Jamalpur workshops eventually became the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering(IRMEE).

Jamalpur As A Site for EIR's Locomotive Workshops--
The place was adjacent to Monghyr (now Munger), which was at that time considered to be Birmingham of East. There was a plentiful supply of skilled mechanics from Munghyr, because inhabitants of Munghyr had been mechanics by trade for centuries, famous for manufacturing iron wares, guns, pistols, spears, etc.

When selection was made it was probably thought that Jamalpur would be on proposed mainline of EIR which was subsequently changed & was directed to Delhi via Ranigunj, Gaya, Mughalsarai, Allahabad & Kanpur. Initially, Jamalpur was only an engine changing station & light repairs were done in running shed there. Original headquarters of the locomotive department of EIR was located at Howrah had a great draw back because it was too confined for extensions as & when needed. At Howrah, original workshop was supposed to handle building of locomotives, carriage & wagons.

Current Activities--
With gradual eclipse of steam traction on Indian Railways, steam locomotive activities, which had peaked to 600 standard units per month in 1962–63, started declining in late 60’s & finally came to a complete end in August 1992. The shop kept pace with technologyup gradation on Indian Railways & diversified its activities to the following-
~ Overhauling & Repair of Diesel Locomotives
~ Overhauling & Repair Of Electric Locomotives
~ Overhauling & Repair of various types of Freight Wagons
~ Manufacture & Overhauling of Diesel Hydraulic Break Down Cranes up to 140 tonne capacity
~ Manufacture & Repair of various types of Tower Cars (such as Mark-II, Mark-III, Mark-IV, DHTC/JMP)
~ Manufacture Of Jamalpur Jacks
~ Manufacture of Wheel Sets for Coaches & Wagons.

About Jamalpur Tunnel--

The Jamalpur Tunnel was constructed in 1860-61 as part of the East Indian Railway(EIR) expansion from Howrah towards Delhi, when opened it was the EIR's first tunnel. The railway had reached Rajmahal in 1860, proceeded westward following the Ganges River reaching Bhagalpur in 1861, Jamalpur in 1862 and finally reaching Delhi in 1866.

The route required the construction of a tunnel through the Rajmahal range to cross the Jamalpur hills between Jamalpur and Ratanpur. The broad gauge(BG) railway was single track with crossing places and included the single track 275m long tunnel.

The Tunnel is among the four oldest railway tunnels in the country constructed by the British.

Owing to heavy traffic on the route, the railways have been trying to carry out Doubling on the entire section and hence the need to construct a new tunnel has arose. Also, Jamalpur Tunnel Has Already Exceeded Its Life-Expectancy, Hence, a new tunnel was an extreme necessity.

Doubling work is now complete in Sahibganj Loop Line. Due to single track passing through the Bariakol tunnel, movement of trains on this section gets affected. Trains had to be stopped either at Ratanpur or at Jamalpur Jn to pass a train through this tunnel. So another tunnel was essential but due to delay in obtaining NOC from the forest department, the project was delayed.
Location of the second Tunnel Is just a few metres south of the Bariakol tunnel towards the diesel shed of the Jamalpur railway workshop.
