वाराणसी : इतिहास से भी पुरातन
वाराणसी भारत के उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य का प्रसिद्ध नगर है। इसे 'बनारस' और 'काशी' भी कहते हैं। इसे हिन्दू धर्म में सर्वाधिक पवित्र नगरों में से एक माना जाता है और इसे अविमुक्त क्षेत्र कहा जाता है। इसके अलावा बौद्ध एवं जैन धर्म में भी इसे पवित्र माना जाता है। यह संसार के प्राचीनतम बसे शहरों में से एक और भारत का प्राचीनतम बसा शहर है|प्रसिद्ध अमरीकी लेखक मार्क ट्वेन लिखते हैं: बनारस इतिहास से भी पुरातन है, परंपराओं से पुराना है, किंवदंतियों (लीजेन्ड्स) से भी प्राचीन है और जब इन सबको एकत्र कर दें, तो उस संग्रह से भी दोगुना प्राचीन है।
वाराणसी नाम का उद्गम संभवतः यहां की दो स्थानीय नदियों वरुणा नदी एवं असि नदी के नाम से मिलकर बना है। ये नदियाँ गंगा नदी में क्रमशः उत्तर एवं दक्षिण से आकर मिलती हैं। नाम का एक अन्य विचार वरुणा नदी के नाम से ही आता है जिसे संभवतः प्राचीन काल में वरणासि ही कहा जाता होगा और इसी से शहर को नाम मिला। इसके समर्थन में शायद कुछ आरंभिक पाठ उपलब्ध हों, किन्तु इस दूसरे विचार को इतिहासवेत्ता सही नहीं मानते हैं

भदोही शहर उत्तर प्रदेश राज्य का एक जिला है | इस जिले का मुख्यालय ज्ञानपुर में है ,पहले यह जिला वाराणसी में था | भदोही जिला प्रयागराज और वाराणसी के बीच में है | यह जिला प्रयागराज ,जौनपुर ,वाराणसी तथा मिर्जापुर की सीमाओं से लगा हुआ है | दोस्तों यह जिला विश्व भर में कालीन उद्योग के लिए विश्व प्रसिद्ध है ,यहां का दूसरा रोजगार कृषि है | भदोही जिला को क्षेत्रफल की दृष्टि से छोटे जिले में गिना जाता है | इस जिले को 30 जून 1994 में उत्तर प्रदेश की 64 जिले के रूप में घोषित किया गया | कुछ समय बाद मायावती की सरकार ने भदोही जिले का नाम “संत रविदास नगर” रख दिया ,लेकिन जब समाजवादी पार्टी की सरकार उत्तर प्रदेश में आई तो मुख्यमंत्री अखिलेश यादव ने फिर से 6 दिसंबर 2014 को “संत रविदास नगर” को पुनः “भदोही” नाम रख दिया | भदोही जिला विश्व भर में “कारपेट सिटी” के नाम से विख्यात है |

Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating to the 11th century B.C. The main ghat in Varanasi on the Ganges river, Dashashwamedh Ghat is a flamboyant place known for its spiritual transcendence.

Our Journey to Varanasi/ Benaras/ Kashi was short but most fulfilling one. We felt something magical when first stepped on the holy land of Kashi Viswanath.The ganges water, Evening aarti, Kashi Viswanath temple, vibrant and colorful Ghaats.... Varanasi is unique with all its elements. One can spend a whole week just by watching people at various ghaats. During our short stay there (2 1/2 days and 2 nights) we tried to explore the place as much as possible.
