Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 and it's the capital of Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand. The name means New City in Thai. That's because back then it became the new capital of the Lan Na kingdom (an ancient kingdom that existed in the area). The city was also very important historically. It's strategically located on the Ping River (a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River), and close to major trading routes.

Chiang Mai - The Coolest City of Thailand!
Chiang Mai has definitely become one of our favourite cities in Thailand. Surrounded by lush green mountains this ancient city blurs lines between the old and the new. We ride to Doi Inthanon National Park to check out the highest peak in all of Thailand. The Old City of Chiang Mai has many stunning temples. Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh leave us completely spellbound. Northern Thailand is known for it’s epic cuisine. We try out a bunch of local delicacies at the very famous Tong Tem Toh Restaurant in the Nimman area. And finally, the over-the-top absolutely indulgent weekend markets of Chiang Mai - the Wua Lai Walking Street and the Phae Walking Street offer never-ending stimuli to your brain! Food, clothes, trinkets, antiques, handicrafts, entertainment - they’ve got it all and then some! We honestly wish we had some more time in this kick ass city!
5. Tour the Buddhist Temples of the old town
There are over 300 Buddhist temples in Chiang Mai and many of them are located inside the historic old town, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phan Tao, and Wat Chedi Luang.
4. Cruise down the Mae Ping River
The Mae Ping River is the main river running through Chiang Mai and offers a quick escape from the city. You can rent a kayak and cruise down yourself or join a 2 hour boat tour that takes you past beautiful scenery around Chiang Mai.
3. Day tour to Doi Inthanon National Park
Home to Thailand’s highest mountain, Doi Inthanon National Park is about a 1.5 hour drive from the city. The park is filled with beautiful waterfalls, hiking trails, viewpoints, and twin pagodas near the summit.
2. Visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
The sacred Doi Suthep temple is about 15 km or 9 miles outside of Chiang Mai. The temple also offers beautiful views of the city and the surrounding area.
1. Chiang Mai Sunday Night Market
The largest market in Chiang Mai is the Sunday Night Market. Starting from the Tha Pae Gate, the market runs along the entire length of the Ratchadamnoen Road from 5pm until around 10.30pm. It’s also possible to visit the Saturday Night Market or the Chang Puak Gate Market on any other day of the week.

Fresh Water Prawns @Ayutthayacafe in Ayutthaya Thailand 🇹🇭
We travel by car from Bangkok Thailand which took us about 2 hours to get there to tour the city and historical landmark. The place was amazing and fair amount of walking. After our tour we came by the river to eat at a place call Ayutthaya Cafe and they place serve one of the best tasting recipe in the market. We order a fresh water prawns and my first taste was so amazing and fresh. You have to try it one day.

As a foreigner visiting Northern Thailand, I didn't know what to expect. If you saw my other Chiang Mai travel vlogs then you know my first impressions of the city were all positive. I'm so grateful I got to explore Chiang Mai some more and get to know the city better, because it is a truly amazing place (as you can see from my reaction in this video). From meeting elephants at Maerim Elephant Sanctuary, to browsing the Tha Phae Walking Street Sunday Night Market, to taking in the beauty of the famous temple Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Ratchaworawihan, my time in Northern Thailand was nothing short of incredible.
