Things To Do In Quebec, Canada: Taking A Road Trip Through Quebec Maritime
Road trips are coming back in vogue and places like Quebec Maritime are built for this kind of travel.Quebec Maritime is split into four regions and in just four days we see three of them and cover a lot of ground. Come along as we see everything from the only log cabin in the city of Saint-Gabriel-de-Rimouski and take on the onsite rope course built by the innkeeper. Next, it's time to head to the Hotel Riotel in the Gaspe Peninsula in the city of Mantane. It sits on the banks of the icy St. Lawrence River and is the perfect spot to enjoy a relaxing night in with a pool, hot tub and comfortable and spacious and comfortable rooms. Come morning, there is just enough time to walk through the colorful town and main street area before heading to the port to board the F.A. Gauthier ferry which takes us and our car to the next region on our list, Cote Nord, which means North Cape in English. After a two-hour drive, we arrive to Ferme 5 Étoiles, a spot that started as a family farm and later expanded to offer lodging, a dining cabin and activities. Here, we meet with rescued wild animals. Then, we team up with partners to dogsled towards the Saguenay Fjord, which is a national park and makes for some of the most beautiful scenery we have seen so far. And finally we go snowmobiling back towards the Saguenay Fjord to round out the trip.

La Baie (Saguenay), Quebec, Canada
This was another unexpected port as our original itinerary had to be changed due to damage at ports caused by hurricane Fiona. I spent the morning walking around town. Cruising up the Saguenay river was breathing. It was similar to the fjords of Norway, or the inside passage of Alaska. We are cruising on Caribbean Princess and started this journey in New York and ending in Quebec City.

17:38 Visit and lunch at Les Escoumins
First stage of our trip, the 200 kilometers separating Tadoussac from Baie-Comeau. It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes for this trip, but like us, if you try the adventure, you may stop many times because the landscape is spectacular.
By taking route 389, you will cross several hydro-electric dams. First, you will see the Manic-2 dam. Stop before crossing the bridge in front of the dam to admire this imposing construction of Quebec engineering and enjoy the breathtaking landscape.
Next, you will come across the René-Lévesque power station, formerly known as Manic-3. Located nearly 75 km from the mouth of the Manicouagan River, the dam is 107 meters high. Commissioned in 1975, its head is 94 meters, which allows it, with its six turbines, to produce 1,244 mega watts.
Finally, at the end of some 215 kilometers of road, we visit the most impressive architectural work in Quebec, Manic-5, one of the main energy production sites in Quebec. Inaugurated in 1968, this building is named after former Quebec premier Daniel Johnson, who tragically died on the site the morning of its inauguration.
The dam is 1.3 kilometers long. With its 13 vaults and 14 buttresses, it is the largest dam of its kind in the world. The central arch is 165 meters high, the equivalent of the tower of the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
Historically, the construction of the Manic-5 power station and the Daniel-Johnson dam was part of the Quiet Revolution, a key period in the national affirmation of Quebecers.
Visits to the dam and the museum are free of charge and various departures are scheduled daily during the summer. It is however necessary to reserve your place rather quickly.
We completed our first day with a visit of Baie-Comeau. A walk in the Parc des Pionniers will allow you to stroll down to the river. The view is exceptional. It is clearly a must-see when visiting the city.
The next day, we made a few nice stops on our way, notably at Pointe-aux-Outardes, Portneuf-sur-mer, Forestville and Longue-Rive.
We complete this journey with a cruise on the sea to admire the whales. For several years, tourists from all over the world have been flocking to Tadoussac or Bergeronnes to discover the largest land mammals. For our part, we chose to leave from Les Escoumins aboard a zodiac.
We were lucky to see countless specimens, including a few humpback whales and fin whales, a whale that can measure up to 24 meters and weigh from 40 to 85 tons. It is the second largest whale in the world after the blue whale.
